Dutch: Pictured in the back center, with a red chestplate, he’s the Heavy Weapons specialist of the squad. So yes, that Rocket Launcher is more than just a placement - it’s his best friend. Besides, of course, Romeo.
Romeo: The squad’s Marksman who previously served with The Rookie in the pivotal First Battle of Earth 2552 (second from left). His trademark weapon is the sniper rifle. Said to be the “wise-ass” of the squad.
Buck: Served in the same squad as The Rookie in the First Battle of Earth. Specialty unknown at this point.
Mickey: Also served in the same squad as The Rookie along with Buck and Romeo. Specialty unknown at this point.
What seems to set ODST apart from the mainstay Halo games is the shift not only in protagonist but in mood and gameplay. ODST takes a more grim, military sci-fi ambience more in tune with the popular Halo novels like Contact Harvest; it makes it’s characters incapable of duel-wielding weapon. There’s also no shielding or motion tracker, so don’t count on rushing head first into combat and clearing house. You’ll get a PDA constantly updating you on way-points along with a special visor to distinguish between friend and foe. With the varying specialties of squad members, the emphasis on tactics and strategy should be more evident than in other first person Halo titles.

Strange memories on this nervous night in Las Vegas. Has it been five years? Six? It seems like a lifetime.
Perhaps a retreat from the superhuman is just what the series needs.

I can't believe I forgot which one of them it was that went fist to fist with 2 Covenant Hunters on the Onyx planet in the Ghosts of the Onyx book.
This game has a lot to live up to. Actually so hyped that I'm listening to the audio book and will find my copy of the book early tomorrow morning. Should be somewhere in my closet. Microsoft better be throwing serious bucks at the graphics engine. The prologue for Fall of the Reach where they all fight like 1,000 grunts is a fantastic place to use to show off the game. There doesn't necessarily need to be 1,000 enemies, but just do something creative to make it look like you are fighting many enemies.

That last sentence might have you excited -- or it might have you fretting -- so I'd best explain it right off the bat. In Halo 3: ODST, you don't play as the Master Chief. Instead you fill the shoes of an Orbital Drop Shock Trooper (ODST). These elite soldiers don't have all of the advantages that a Spartan like Master Chief enjoys. That means that their overshield, though regenerative, isn't as strong. They have health bars that slowly whittle away just like the first Halo game. They take damage if they fall too far. They can't jump as high. You can't dual wield weapons. They even have a powerful pistol with a zoomed scope and suppressed muzzle. Now do you get the references to the first Halo?

I'm a Halo nut lore wise though and I'll take any opportunity to approach this universe from different angles. The cutscenes and just the.. like.. "situation" stuff I find really exciting. ODST are incredibly badass and I've been intrigued by them since the Halo 2 live demo at E3.

I think even Microsoft and Bungie are aware of what people would think hence why they announced Halo : Reach to let people know that something else is out there and on the way.

I'm excited enough for it and the 5 hour or so campaign will be great I think. Then again, I've a good grasp of what the product is. I've no intention of paying RRP for it for that matter mind!
EDIT: I'm not saying this is the best deal in the world, just probably not the worst.

To be honest though, my expectations were completely reasonable within the framework of the Halo 3 engine, I was just under the impression that it would be balanced differently and that you couldn't take out Brutes backed up by Grunts the way they do in the gameplay footage. I was under the impression that you'd have to be careful with what firefights you entered and that you would be alone in the city, skulking in the shadows, helped by this strange AI that sends messages on computer screens.
That was my expectation, and instead it's a squad shooter with action extremely similar to the head ons you do in Halo, except they're bringing back health bars for when your shield craps out. Taking down banshees with bazookas and stuff.. it's.. it's just that I didn't really expect it to encompass the same things you've been doing in Halo for the last 6 years I guess.

Do ODSTs possess the same level of strength as a Spartan?
I wouldn't be surprised if this game's existence is the very reason Bungie wanted a bit of independence from MS. We all know Bungie is a talented team, but when you've got all these other franchises, some not even in the same league as the Halo Franchise looking as if they're putting a flagship like Halo to shame in the visuals department that has to turn more than just a few heads. I've been watching the reactions to ODST on g4 even from random people that called in from home and man.. you see a lot of Halo hardcores holding back their fire because they support the franchise and the developer.
Someone was asked earlier about what they think of Halo 3 : ODST and the guy's reaction was "I'm not sure what to think" and that's really all that needed to be said I think.
