Halo 3: Orbital Drop Shock Trooper Thread

Open explorable city and clue searching alone make the experience very different. Obviously the underlining combat will be pretty much the same.
I saw the map, but I don't think it's going to feel like an open and explorable city. Is there really anything more to the "clue searching" than walking over highlighted items on the ground?

Since combat is pretty much what Halo's gameplay was, the fact that ODST's combat looks pretty...samey... doesn't do anything to make me think it will feel any different.

Yes, that's what he talked about during the demonstration.

Obviously the game isnt going to turn into GTA but, its still an open explorable city, nothing like anything we've seen in any Halo game to date

Open and explorable isn't a selling point for me unless it results in a lot of varied enemy encounters. Far Cry 2 was open and explorable, but fuck if I didn't find that to be one of the most boring games ever.

I dont think it'll be like Far Cry 2, but It wont be "Run and Gun" like the usual Halo either.

this is definitely not a run and gun type of game. you're no longer a super soldier that can take on any one anymore.

I got to play Firefight yesterday at E3 and you're definitely not as strong as the Chief was/is. i was playing it like i would any other Halo and quickly realized that it was a mistake.

my stamina would drop so easily while fighting grunts. you will have to take cover and approach every encounter in a tactical fashion.

needless to say, i loved every minute of it.

Presumably Heretic wasn't playing on Legendary straight off so higher difficulty will demand even more strategy.

A good Halo fan I know had it right when he pointed out the main difference will be the range of engagement. If the ODST gets involved in close quarters fighting he's toast. He won't be able to mix it up close and personal. You'll have to be more guarded, keep a bit more distance and pick and choose the bigger enemies to pick off rather than jump straight into the middle and start swinging.

Hence the beefed up pistol :P

That's mostly how I played Halo to begin with....or most FPS's for that matter. I guess for some people this might be different, but I haven't seen any gameplay that has featured the need to approach combat any differently. Fingers crossed I suppose.

It essentially argues that Halo 3: ODST is effectively the realisation of the original Halo 2 E3 demonstration that got a lot of people excited as well as a more natural evolution of Halo 1 then the other two sequels ever were. Ascendant Justice know their Halo stuff, much of the speculation in the past has been more than on the money.

Great article. It seems indeed that there are a lot of things in ODST that are homage to Halo 1. Hopefully exploring New Mombasa will give me a lot of fun and satisfaction. :)

Well then I can as well play Halo 3 on legendary. The Chief dies with just two direct hits of a brute shot. You can't mow down everyone up close and personal like you would on normal difficulty.

I just don't think ODST will add anything cool to the series. It's the most blatant attempt I've seen yet of a quick cash in, an overpriced one at that.

Why make more when you can use the ones you already have to artificially inflate the value of your expansion pack to $60?

I have both Halo 1 and 2 and never been compelled to play them. Right now busy with Star Ocean though and right after that it's going to be Tales of Vesperia but may be I will soon :)

Hmm now that I've actually given ODST a real looksy and checked out more sustained gameplay videos, it actually looks pretty damn fun.

Ultimately it probably won't be enough to actually make me buy it, but it does look fun and have the Brute Chieftans been giving a little extra pep in their step? I don't know if I remember them being able to make such massive jumps when delivering blows with their hammer.

ODST really does strike me as Halo back to its roots, but I'm finding it hard to get interested without it involving the chief or other important characters in the series.

A halo title built with a ground up engine designed truly around the 360's capabilities and that awesome AI and gameplay can really end up being something incredible.
