In the gloom of the base, Halo 3 doesn't actually look all that different from its predecessors -- sure, the Marines are a lot less blocky, but it's difficult to appreciate the game's visual enhancements in pitch darkness. Outside, though, it's a different story, and there's no question that Bungie is pushing the 360 hardware to create a damn good looking game. The fears left by the beta are clearly unfounded.
SCREENS: Halo 3 is the Master Chief's story, but fallen Covenant warrior The Arbiter isn't forgotten. He's the second player's character in co-op. (Note: Level shown in image is not Tsavo Highway.) Click the image above to check out all Halo 3 screens.
Many of Halo 3's most impressive effects are subtle, such as its use of HDR (high dynamic range) lighting to mimic the mechanics of the human eye -- go from darkness to sunlight and Master Chief's vision takes a moment to adjust to the glare. And unlike many next gen games, it's remarkably un-shiny; although metallic objects reflect light, matte surfaces like dirt and wood and stone are as dull as you'd expect.
Dull doesn't mean ugly in this case, though; the road to Tsavo highway is gorgeous, a path of reddish earth sprinkled with patches of grass and dappled with sun and shade from the trees lining the way. It's a straightforward path, surrounded on either side by rock, but more interesting is the massive ring-shaped wreckage strewn along the route. Your marine companions' chatter reveals this to be the New Mombasa orbital elevator, which was destroyed early in Halo 2 when the Prophet of Regret made a low-orbit hyperspace jump that annihilated the city. Now the wreckage stretches a thousand kilometers across the savannah, seemingly pointing the way to the Covenant occupying forces.

And the new feature, enemy-radar, LOL. It's a motion sensor for starters.
Swing and a miss Eurogamer!
Shane Kim: What the....Jesus, how did you know about that?!
Eg: Bungie announced it a short while ago.
SK: Are you sure?
Eg: Yes.
SK: I'll have to confirm that, that was supposed to be our BIG announcement at Leipzig.

Apparently (according to a Eurogamer editor)...
Instead of showing you the health-tabs of your dude, its now a pure emeny-radar which also gives you orientation-points - red dots for enemies, yellow dots for orientation."

The fans have spoken. Concerning the graphics of the Halo 3 Beta: "There's so many little effects and things going on that make this game pretty much 2nd only to Gears at the moment."
The problem I have with Eurogamer is that in an effort to beat their US counterparts (and I sympathise a little as the Euro journos are at something of a disadvantage at times) they rush out copy/reviews and hence the quality of their output dips.
They did this with Gears. Played through on Easy and didn't touch the multiplayer to get their review out in line with the US sites. Consequently found themselves to be out of sync with everyone else and rather than front up, tried to redeem themselves in similarly embarrassing fashion justifying it.
A shame as some of their more considered output I think is decent, though the Eurogamer network still has this tendency to lap up Sony PR and spout it out verbatim and without question but seemingly downplay everything else.
You toss in the crap like the GoW review -- it is hard for me to think of a legit site that did a review, WITH A SCORE, of half a game -- and it is what it smells like: They take the big games as oppurtunity to drive interest in their site.
Pure marketing. And they aren't the only site to do this. Gamespot has conveniently picked editors and positions in the past to get similar results.
Controversy sells. Look, you guys linked to and are TALKING about Eurogamers.

Can they achieve that E3 trailer? The answer is probably not, and by a long shot.
The only thing that I can see that the game will impress me with is the lighting and the huge environments/battles they talk about. Other than that, it is very underwhelming like I said.
It really does look like some sort of deja vu from Halo 2, where they are not to the level of what they first showed.
What makes everything look so "bad" (it's not terrible, I'll give them that), are the textures, especially on vehicles. I kid you not but on page ~3 or so of the article, there's a pic with a warthog with 4 characters in it, what my eyes saw was the lowest low-res vehicle I've seen this generation.
But it's not only the textures on the warthog and pretty much all its occupants, in terms of details/polygons, it pretty much looks like a copy/paste from Halo 2......yes, like the beta.
If anyone here has ever played Rainbow Six Vegas co-op, did you look at those textures? Well, that's pretty much what I see all over the place in the H3 single player. This applies to every vehicle, most of the characters, and a LARGE part of the--lacking--environment.
Ooops what's that? Lacking environment? Yes. I remember when they said that those steel boxes in that video where simply temporary, and that the real decorators would be placed later on........one month before release and they still show shots with unimaginative, low resolution square boxes.........when you run out of ideas, just throw a box in there.
Man. It really is something worthy of seeing.
I'm sure you've seen them too.
SCANS REMOVED
Not one shot in EGM's mag looks as good as these and these have quite a bit of quality loss due to the scans.

Regarding boxes, One level starts off in a warehouse and I believe there is an industrial town called Voi which you come across. There's bound to be boxes!
Just remeber the E3 06 Trailer. It's not just the trailer, but there was this ominous behind the door demo and every press visitor stated that the demo even looks better than the trailer. Now, the final game doesn't nearly come close to the trailer. the game even nearly come close to Gears of War, a game that is outdated and beaten (in the graphics area) by lots of other current/upcomming games.
Then they've made that hype about the real looking grass. If you would look at the ground you wouldn't notice any differende to real world grass. Where is it? Nowhere! The only thing they are using are some kind of flat photo texture (you could see it in the Beta). The 3D grass they are using is absolutly not worth to mention, because it's just bad. Ridiculous, even 7 years old PC games have provided photo textures. Even Halo 1 has had some photo textures, but it was low res, because of SDTV. The HALO 3 grass even can't keep up with the 3D grass of GoD2, it doesn't come nearly to the grass of CoD3 and certainly can't keep up with the grass of CoD4.
Next causeless hype are the character animations. Bad, it's just bad. Just look at the E3 07 trailer when the mc runs out of the forrest or when he was walking in this starship vessel.
I am definitly buying HALO3 to make my final judgement and to see how this trilogy ends. but from a technical view HALO 3 looks underwhelming.
