this is the best shooter ever, for me at least. SciFi setting ... it doesnt get any better than that. I just can't stand all those Duties, Battlefields, Flashpoints, Rainbows, G.R.A.W.'s and so on anymore. All that military Hail-America stuff just doesnt do it for me.

If I could play a game as a slave during the civil war slicing up some southern guys on the other hand, consider that a day one purchase for me ;)

yeah I know, but it's more the planet as a whole ;)

Besides, I did play all those games, so it's some kind of saturation of the american war-setting.

SciFi- (BladeRunner, Halo, GoW), Gothic/Mythic- (Castlevania, GodofWar) or Sexy-setting (DoA, BulletWitch, Bayonetta) on the other hand I can't get enough ;)

I'm surprised that forge can be used to create such great looking maps, it completely wipes the floor with anything Halo 3 forge had to offer. I cant wait to see what the community comes up with. I expect to see some really nice remakes in the not to distant future :)

So correct me if I'm wrong... but you can't sculpt new maps from nothing, like you could in Far Cry 2's awesome map editor. They give you a pre-selected environment, then you stamp down prebuilt geometry? Is that correct?

I think Far Cry 2 is still the editor to beat. You can make roadways, rivers, waterways, place trees, sculpt canyons, hills/mountains, place buildings etc.
Is this an improvement over that?

You can't edit the world geometry but the template they give you to build in this time around is enormousness, and you can build pretty complicated maps with that prebuilt geometry.

I know that they had the ability to put the right bits in (like the sniper perch, dish etc.) as well as the terrain but the fact that they were able to make three pretty darn good remakes of old maps in Forge speaks volumes.

As to whether we get a playlist, I don't know. I think we'll certainly see them more in matchmaking. Even in Halo 3 there was at least one playlist that had several Sandbox variants in and at least one special playlist they did that was literally just that, perhaps only for a weekend though.

The bigger issue I think is one of control over the player experience; as in they won't want to put maps in a playlist without running them through their own tools etc. to check that they are fun and balanced. As much as the community will filter out a lot of noise, I doubt that works well enough for control freak devs :P

That said, the fact that they have 'tools for evaluating user created content' and presumably people like Shiska whose job it might be to do it sounds quite promising.

For me, I just hope they ship with more maps than Halo 3, even taking into account Forge world, Invasion and Firefight. If there are only like 5-6 non Forge-world maps for regular stuff like Team Slayer etc. then I think people will be upset.

+3 (more?) Forge world maps (Blood Gulch, Sanctuary, Ascension)

Boneyard and Spire as Invasion maps

Some firefight maps including presumably Overlook. Firefight maps are probably lifted from the campaign. You can see why, we're already up to 7 MP environments when Halo 3 shipped with 11(?). Presumably there will be at least one other Invasion map but out of that theoretical 8, one is the Forge world map, another is a remake, 3 will probably only be good for Invasion and two we played the hell out of in the beta.

I hope the strategy of building dual spaces for MP maps and SP pays off and we don't get short changed on good MP environments as a result (mitigating factor of excellent forge-world accepted)

Nobody asked to see this, but I did notice some oohs and awes over some recently released game footage that shows off a couple of the new assassinations that our amazing animators worked into Reach. You got a taste of some of these kick ass coups de grace in the multiplayer beta back in May, but that was but a mere sampling of the final carnage count. According to animation producer Matt Richenburg, all told there are over forty custom assassinations packed into the shipping product, most multiplayer, some specific to campaign.
Those who played copious amounts of Halo: CE over LAN are likely already familiar with both Race and Rally. Bam! What’s old is new again, and both gametypes are built right in to Reach.


his week, Derek also told me that my segueing skills sucked big time. Which totally hurt my feelings. But the careful reader will note that mere seconds ago I was writing about Armor Effects and now I’m writing about Forge FX and everything is married up seamlessly. You probably didn’t even realize I had already changed the subject. It’s called being awesome, Derek. Try it sometime.

MP Bots.

And while we are at it my pre-release pre-emptive "this game COULD have more" list :P

* A Browser for active custom games. Just like the PC. Hit the "custom game" filter and browse games in progress. A small note about player count (open/max), ping, locked, map, if modified, and rules (CTF, Slayer, etc) with the option to see "Advanced" info (fuller rule details). Would have been VERY simple. Promised for Halo 3 and retracted at launch. Booh!

* 6 player FireFight Versus. 4 Spartans vs. 2 Elites + Covenant sounds more balanced and fun. I will be doing a bit of 3v1 and laughing at my foes as I mow down 3 Spartans BUT a couple more players would have made it epic.

* Ahem... playing as an Elite against Spartans in Coop Campaign. I know, this is reaching... but this is REACH! I am dreaming of crossplayer in a relevant game. I can dream, right?

* The ability to carry multiple AAs. Mainly a wish for custom games. Hitting Dpad to cycle through AAs would have been so sweetly Crysis like!

* More robust custom game rule changes / Forge. Phases objects in Forge look great and the budgets are large. Maps are huge. But some more tools (ala Far Cry 2) would have been great. But more importantly is some game logic. They have a LOT of MP rules to adjust but a simple, "If / Then" system would be awesome. "If A is captures, B becomes capturable."

* No Forging Fire Fight maps. :(

* Real MSAA. I can live with just-shy-of-HD. I can live with the filtering shown. But real AA, not temporal, would have been nice.

* Higher online MP cap. I want a BF clone in the Haloverse!!! Dedicated servers while you're at it! But seriously, I have a 20Mb connection (10Mb upstream). If I want 24-32 players in a custom match pleeeease let me! Some basic squad tools would be nice too.

* On those squad controls... they are having HUGE battles. One thing about Spartan lore is they are commanding units. I don't want GRAW, but a basic ROSE to select a unit/group and tell them to group/spreadout/fallback/attack would be nice. Telling all my guys to flanks from the left and using cloak to go to the right would be too sweet!

But yes, so far very impressive. I wish it came out 2 months ago. I didn't get MNC because once Reach hits I will probably not play another game for... a year???

Screw bots. I'm totally a bot hater. I'm mad that Valve is putting them into TF2. I hope they manage them properly. Bots helped make UT3 unplayable. The population was small, but would have stayed alive if people weren't dispersed through the community because they were all alone on servers full of bots. Bots water the community down if they're not handled correctly, and they're no where near as fulfilling as playing against people.

Obviously I agree on some of your other points though Acert. I certainly would like to see a custom games browser, for example, but I gave up expecting that out of bungie when they turned on the community when we expressed our disappointment that it wasn't in Halo 3. I think your firefight versus concept sounds brilliant though. It's like.. Left 4 Halo !
