Kind of a shame that it's currently scoring less than Halo 3. As much as I loved that game, I find it hard to believe that it's better than Reach.

Not that it matters all that much, but still.

From what i'm expecting of the game i think Jeff Gerstmann got it right when saying:
It's not going to change your mind about Halo, but this special delivery for fans of the franchise is a great send-off as Bungie ends its involvement with the franchise to go work on something new.
From what i've seen and heard about the game, that seems to be pretty much it. Much like it's predecessors it seems the game doesn't stray too far away from the path, and if htat's what youa re after then great for you i guess. I might get it for the MP, but after some reviews i don't think i'll be rushing out to get it day 1 anymore. I really had hoped for something a bit more engaging in the campaign, but from what i hear it's seemingly just encounter after encounter without much variety, aside form a few vehicle sections.

But hey, like i said, the fans are sure to be pleased and i can say that if i had a little more cash to spend i'd probably get this come tuesday.

Really? The majority of the reviews I've read say that it's the most epic and compelling campaign the series has seen.

There's actually no point in me arguing about Reach as my biggest beef with it is really the fact that i think it looks too much like the other 3 games (gameplay wise that is, teh graphics look pretty nice actually). I don't know, i just feel a bit of personal franchise fatigue for this one i guess. Combine that with hearing basically "It's the halo we all love!" from reviewers doesn't bolster my enthusiasm as much as it somewhat curbs it. I'm still interested in playing it, mainly because the Halo multiplayer feels like the modern day equivalent of Quake or something like that (rather than stuff like Modern Warfare) but yeah. I know i'm wrong as everybody think this is bloody awesome but for me, personally, the series needs a major refreshing for me to really get excited about it. But like i said, that's just me.

It was always going to be fundamentally Halo; Bungie has long since stated that this was their fond farewell for the series, so I didn't expect them to take too many chances. All I'll say is this: I wasn't particularly fond of Halo 3, and felt as though the series was getting stale - the same applies to ODST. Having played the Reach Beta however, I can say that this is the most fresh the series has felt since the beginning. While it is still undoubtedly a Halo title, it's a genuinely refreshing experience.

If you simply don't like the Halo gameplay, then that's fair game - this was never going to change your mind. But if, like me, you felt as though the series was getting stale, Reach is the one to bring you back.

I too need a big reason to get excited about Reach as Halo 3 whilst good did not really fill me with joy, and ODST was ok at best, but i have to admit that after reading all the reviews, i cant WAIT for Reach, i had initially written SP off but after reading the reviews i really cant wait to play it, the MP sounds flawless but i knew that anyway, but it looks like SP will great also.

Just a few of many quotes on the SP.

Bungie has managed to do something that eluded George Lucas years ago: create a prequel to a beloved sci-fi series that not only simply works, but is at times better than the installments it precedes. After spending ten hours with the campaign, and another eight or so with the multiplayer, it's already clear that for their exit from the Halo franchise, the developers at Bungie have crafted a fine sendoff in Halo: Reach.

One of Reach's immediate improvements is its storytelling. The Halo trilogy's story has been impeded by both inconsistency (a curious mix of either over-explaining or obfuscating dialogue), and by becoming a fan-only affair overflowing with series technobabble a la Star Trek. Reach rectifies this "inside baseball" feel by telling a broader, more accessible story that doesn't require knowing tons of Halo terminology beforehand.

Don't assume that because you know there exists a Halo novel called The Fall of Reach -- which details Master Chief's origin and his experience during the Covenant glassing of the United Nations Space Command fortress planet Reach -- that you know how Reach the game ends. The campaign focuses on Noble Team -- a UNSC special operations team composed of Spartans (think Delta Force by way of Iron Man) -- and the missions it undertakes. You control the team's newest member, Noble Six (you actually replace the previous Noble Six, whose fate is detailed in the most recent commercial), as Noble Team is tasked with investigating what happened at a downed communication outpost.

Without spoiling anything further, the campaign ultimately unfolds into a grand re-telling of the Battle of Thermopylae, but portrayed from a gritty, ground-level perspective across multiple missions like Band of Brothers, and all done with typical Halo flourish. It's about elite warriors (interestingly, Spartans in both stories) and the sacrifices they make during their last stand against insurmountable odds, and the lasting impact their actions impress upon the rest of the series.

An epic story, incredible pacing, and a spot-on mix of old and new elements make Reach’s campaign Halo’s best yet. Oh, and when you’ve finished the story mode, plan on spending a large chunk of your life in the massive online universe. Any way you cut it, Halo: Reach is a fantastic swan song for Bungie, and it leaves behind a Spartan-sized set of boots for 343 Industries to fill.

Shortly before Halo: Combat Evolved landed like a Gravity Hammer on the original Xbox, a novel titled Halo: The Fall of Reach introduced fans to the sci-fi universe that would forever change the face of console first-person shooters. Nearly nine years, five games, and countless action figures, comic books, and yes, even energy drinks later, the video game retelling of the events depicted in that first novel has finally arrived. But Bungie’s final Halo hasn’t come to finish the fight--Master Chief handled that task in Halo 3; on the contrary, Reach is here to start the fight. A prequel to the original Halo, Reach’s narrative conclusion is revealed right in the title of the previously mentioned novel.

So, it’s a great surprise that a game with a not-so-secret ending manages to unspool the greatest Halo yarn yet. Despite going in knowing Reach will end with humanity on the brink of extinction, the game still consistently nudges players to the edge of their seats. This is due in no small part to a much more emotional, human-driven story than we’ve ever seen unfold in the series. As Six, a member of Noble Team, it doesn’t take very long for you to become attached to your new Spartan family.
#
Story-wise, Halo: Reach makes its predecessors feel almost amateurish. It's a prequel to the first Halo, so Master Chief hasn't yet come into play. Instead, you play Noble Six, the last (and nameless) Spartan to join the elite Noble Team. Dispatched on a seemingly innocent mission on Reach, the last bastion of the UNSC's defences before Earth, Noble Team uncovers a Covenant invasion. Cue a titanic struggle for the planet which we know is ultimately doomed, but that doesn't make it any less epic.
#
It's immediately apparent at the start of Reach how much of a greater focus Bungie has put into the characters. There's more dialogue, cutscenes and story presented than in previous titles, and Reach easily has the most character development ever seen in a Halo title -- to the point that I grew attachments to the characters and genuinely felt sad at a number of events that happened over the course of the campaign. The very last mission will choke you up a bit.

Saying that, I just went on the first level of Halo 3 on legendary to get my eye in and nearly throw my xbox out the window, bloody snipers.

Yea, I don't get this at all. Reach is the most fundamentally different Halo ever, and it takes more chances than most sequels do. This is the major refreshing.

I played a bunch of Halo 3 last night in preparation. I'm ready.

Game reviews are relative to the market at the time. Halo 3 had 4 player coop, Forge, Theater, etc at the release when pretty much no one else was doing that.

And this game has an even crazier forge, firefight and versus firefight, extremely extended matchmaking and file sharing options, etc. I think the not-so-subtle changes to Halo's core gameplay might actually work against it in some ways. It's sorta hilarious that someone could say that this is just the same 'ole Halo while other people were complaining about how different it felt (beta). You can't please everyone. Some people won't be satisfied that they're doing enough and some people don't even recognize the sweeping changes the bungie is making to the formula. I can't wait, anyway, Halo 3 is an amazing game. The campaign fell a few notches short of my expectations but it was still an awesome package, with awesome online (and splitscreen) MP experiences to be had, and Reach is just going to be so much more.

I hope every review has the balls to point this out. Per IGN:
The only downer is that there is no way to search for a custom game. If a game type isn't in the predetermined matchmaking hoppers and you don't have friends online, you're out of luck.

It's because it was like hitting someone with a 18 wheeler in the beta. Super strong melee + sprinting = far too many melee kills.

The different changes to the gameplay made melee stand out in a way it that wasn't even as apparent in previous Halo games. I don't think it will actually have a big impact on the game. I expressed similar concerns because of the changes to frags. They're messing with something that was pretty delicately balanced (the Halo trifecta; melee/weapons/nades), but it still all jived pretty well in the beta so I'm certain they know what they're doing. Have they constructed a full list of changes since the beta, anyway? I'd be interested in reflecting on that a little before jumping back in.

The AR does suck. Some people think it should. I think the latter is sorta ridiculous, but if you start with a sidearm it's all leveled out anyway.

Reach has far fewer useless weapons than Halo 3 though :)
