Brian Garrard, Community Lead at Bungie, has revealed new details regarding the upcoming Halo: Reach Beta and what it holds in-store for its fans.

Speaking do Dan Maher, Xbox Live Editor otherwise known as MrPointyHead, Garrard explains “It basically will represent a sub-section of almost every main portion of the game. For example, we’ll have a couple of the new armour abilities that we’ve been talking about which are sort of the new version of equipment which have pretty immense implications for gameplay. So some of those will be in there, some of the weapons will be in there, we’ll have a subset of maps, we’ll have a subset of game-types some of which are returning favourites, some are brand new that people don’t even know about yet.”

He continues, “So, all in all it’s going to be a really good representative sampling of the final game. But of course we’re going to hold back some stuff as we’ve got a long way to go until the Fall and we want people to have some stuff to look forward to.”

Surely interesting stuff, and we’ll certainly be looking forward to finding out the developments regarding the new armour abilties as well as what the new game-types will be. Halo: Reach is certainly shaping up to be one of the biggest titles of 2010.

I read that but in other interviews they've referred to it as an MP demo.

I'd imagine they would have to beta a Firefight match-making mode though if they are going to put one in and Jarrad's on record as saying that was his biggest regret from ODST.

Remember in the recent ViDoc where Joe Tung said that we were doing things that players have never seen before in a Halo game? Yeah. That’s what’s on screen. Stuff you’ve never seen in a Halo game before. And when you see it, your jaw’s gonna hit the floor.

What Cotton is playing around with right now is beautiful and alien and huge. Brian launched into a bevy of questions designed to break Cotton down and reveal all the holes and limitations in his master plan, but at each and every step, his efforts were easily foiled by Cotton’s expertly crafted construct.

“Yup, we’re doing that.”

“Yup, that’s in.”

“Already in the plan.”

We joked that what Cotton’s working on deserves a ViDoc all by itself, and as we walked away, Brian and I realized that the sentiment really was no joke. We really could drop ten minutes covering just this. Easily. But then again, I could drop a single image and it would probably be enough to send you over the edge.

Could they actually be referring to a Halo ring of some sort? That beautiful, alien and huge line was used in reference to Halo when you crash landed on it in Halo CE in the vidoc.

I could not agree more. Firefight is singlehandedly made the otherwise "meh" ODST worth the time. It's like Horde mode, or terrorist hunt, etc... all great shooters that have this type of mode give me plenty of hours of great fun.

Halo's weapon variety is just so perfect for this gameplay type. It would be a huge shame if they did not manage to put this mode in Reach along with a proper match-making setup.

The use of the word construct may also be a hint of some kind. I'm honestly starting to think my hope of showcasing Master Chief and Cortana in the halo debris field with others hijacking the covenant flag ship may not be so far fetched afterall :P

But then if I'm wrong, it really doesn't matter as long as it's cool.

Someone on gaf speculated that it could refer to MP, but I totally think it's a reference to SP because, in the Vidoc, Joe Tung said what he said about them doing things in that people have never seen or expect in a halo game before, and he said it specifically in reference to Campaign.

The Halo gameplay made it better for me :p It really got frantic at points- especially when there are multiple tanks an friggin' buggers harrassing you. Much more dynamic than Gears...

Today marks the second day of our first full campaign mission play-test, where participants get to play through every mission of the game and provide feedback. It’s always brutal getting feedback at this stage of development, because the game is really just now coming together, but it’s invaluable for us and allows us to make course corrections if needed. At this stage, AI are still doing really silly things, the environments are not complete, and we still have “robot voice” providing much of our mission dialogue.

We have auto-generated speech from the thousands of lines of combat and mission dialogue in the game right now. It’s hilarious to hear how the robot voice butchers much of the speech. Thank goodness Marty is down in LA right now recording all that dialogue with a bunch of very talented actors. Hopefully he’ll be able to get everything we need during this one massive two week recording session. But, I’m sure I’ll want something changed and we’ll need to get a few pick up sessions later.

I’ve been developing Halo games since late 1997, and the general process of making games has changed dramatically. Instead of 20 guys in an old building near south Chicago, we’re now 150+ near Seattle and building the biggest game we’ve ever attempted. But, while we’ve built better processes around making games, it will always be a creative endeavor – and that always requires more effort than anyone can ever reflect in a schedule.

steve cotton is working on one of the craziest things ever in a halo game.
Also from the blog page. I believe he's a 3D environment guy. So it's potentially something pretty nuts that has to do with the environment, perhaps massive changes in real-time gameplay.

Bungie do know how to tease though, I'll give them that. I'm more excited about the singleplayer than I am the multiplayer to be honest, mostly because I've always been more about a game's solo campaign than its online component.

That really makes me appreciate normal mapping. They took a relatively low poly model and mad it look crazy good. Does that say 1300 polys( triangles)? Thats still a respectable amount for what is essentially a background character, and I bet a large portion is on his face( it looks more rounded than the rest). Modern realtime modeling results stun me on a regular basis...

I just glanced at the article posted on gaf about the Reach in-game model and holy crap... lol.

I don't know what's more sad, the article and resulting comment comparisons of a random non main character in Reach to what is basically a main character in Killzone, or that they believe Killzone on the ps2 is pushing more polys than Halo Reach.

But of course, before even getting to all of that, one would think the comparison of a much larger scale shooter like Halo to Killzone would be pointless from the start. :)

Even with upped AA, it still looks awesome in the actual game. That cutscene with Noble Six and those soldiers in the Reach vidoc where it looked like they were pointing their weapons at him looked amazing ;)

That face model isn't a game asset. SketchFactor pointed out: "They are models created as part of a submission portfolio/test when the artist was seeking contract employment with Bungie."
