Please, no artificial carrot and stick progression. I'm getting enough of that bullshit in Battlefield. Halos ranks and medals are plenty enough rewarding without any of that crap.
It already has an XP system that is pretty meaningless. The 'rank' is just Bungie's variation of TruSkill and is supposed to be a tool as opposed to a reward. The EXP system reflects how much somebody has played the game. It used to be by dividing EXP by Games played you could get a small impression of another player but that became less useful once double XP weekends became regular.

A good performance by an individual in a game which their team lost is unrewarded. Designed properly, it can even encourage better behaviour in MP matches; eg. by rewarding players who focus on objectives in team games as opposed to treating them like Team Deathmatch hoppers.

Fulfilling the challenges is fun. If I do something pretty rare in an MP game, like get an extermination there's nothing wrong with getting an XP bonus for it either.

One problem that has plagued Halo since Halo 2 are secondary accounts and/or people intentionally devaluing their ranks to get matched up with players of less ability. Tie a progression curve that adds value to a gamertag and the problem won't go away but it'll be reduced.

Haha cool, I don't have any real issue with the jetpacks. In fact, I'm excited about what it may potentially mean for the SP portion of the game and the kinds of things we can expect.

Game looks like it'll be a lot of fun :)

You really need to be rewarded for losing? Well, whatever, just so long as they don't go down the horrid Battlefield/Call of Duty route with the artificial carrot and stick gameplay, I'm fine.

No but if I get match-made on to a team of idiots who want to play Team Deathmatch in a King of the Hill match, rewarding me for playing the actual game type makes me feel less like it was a waste of 12 minutes of my life and de-courages such behaviour from the outset. If at the same time I have a good game but the match is lost because of said idiots, why shouldn't I see something out of it?

If a team in one game takes a big early lead and half the losing one quits, the reward for those that stick around in a miserable ten minutes getting spawn killed and not being docked any EXP for the priviledge. Again if they stick around, make a few kills in a losing effort, rewarding them is a positive step.

Progression systems are fun and addictive but that doesn't mean they can't be put to good use and used to encourage good player behaviour at the same time.

Is losing really a public game really that big of a deal to most people? And no, they don't encourage you to play the game correctly. Just play some Bad Company 2 or Call of Duty and try to tell me how that works out. You'll still have teams of snipers sitting stationary in Rush maps in BC2, despite the stupid little carrot and stick gameplay that seems so popular these days. It's crazy that people need progression to get addicted to a competitive games. The fun of the game used to be the gameplay, but now it's turning into some weird hybrid MMO experience. I wouldn't be surprised if MW3 had us running collection quests. That's a total turn off. Never mind how balance breaking progression systems really are.

And really, if you're playing an online game, you shouldn't be worried about wasting 12 minutes of your life, because you're doing that when you win, too. But the medal/rank (versus level) system seems rewarding enough for me. If they want to tie it to unlockables, they should be purely aesthetic upgrades.

But yeah, if you're just talking EXP rewards, as in how they're already used in Halo, well then I wouldn't care at all. But any hints of progression poisoning this franchise are entirely unwelcome.

Look directly to the right of the radar on the HUD, it gives you your specific location on the map, has that always been in halo 3 mp? I wouldn't know, I've yet to play any Halo 3 MP outside of the beta when it was released.

Oh and Bungie have certainly put the kobosh on any hopes of there being a progression system in the game with one of their interviews. I definitely agree 100% with Grift. MP should be purely about the gameplay with teams and individuals putting their skills to test against other players. If the gameplay is fun and it's actually very possible for the skill gaps between various players or teams to become immensely obvious, and have a real impact on the outcome of the game, then that experience alone should be all the reward that one requires. Any rewards should be purely cosmetic as opposed to gameplay altering.

It isn't good for anyone to ever start out with an advantage over anyone else. If they are going to, let it be because they've made superior strategic choices with regards to loadouts or whatever, or simply because they're just the smarter or superior player.

Oops, seems like minsinterprated what was being said. I thought we were talking about cod type stuff being in halo mp :P

Even though I'm far more likely to just play the SP :D

Oh and something I just noticed with regards to the loadouts, they were specifically highlighting the fact that 3 different spartans all had different armor abilities.

One had the jetpack, one was clearly sprinting, and one was using active camo.

It probably means you can look through the roster of people on your team and get detailed information on them, stats, clans or groups they've been a part of etc etc.

Although, if these things were already in Halo, I wouldn't know because I'm, for the most part, a purely SP player.

Some GamerNode guestermations?
New Multiplayer Modes

Invasion: Appears to be one of the more promising game types, causing players to either defend the level as a Spartan or invade and destroy as an Elite. It looks like the Elite may get some help from Phantoms and be able to man the standard Banshees, Ghosts, and Wraiths, while the Spartans may be forced to use only landlocked vehicles, like the Warthogor Scorpion.

Headhunter: Has some strange Sonic the Hedgehog ring-collecting reminiscence, pitting players against each other in a deathmatch battle where the objective is not only to kill the other players, but to collect heads from their deaths. It looks like more heads will be awarded for headshots (makes sense), and perhaps even more heads are awarded for Killjoys.

Active Roster: Only shown breifly, but looks to be a Spartan vs. Spartan battle, possibly allowing deathmatch and king of the hill game types.

Spartans vs. Elites: Looks to be the standard "Civil War" (as Bioshock 2 calls it) game type, launching players into an epic struggle of the species. Tanks will certainly be involved.

The Arena: Not sure if this is just a reference to the multiplayer maps or another game type. If it is another game type, expect more of the same. Killing, vehicles, Spartans, Elites, etc.

New Weapons

While it seems that a lot of weapons are making some sort of modified return (the powerful pistol, the various types of rifles, shotgun, rocket launcher, energy hammer, sniper, etc.), the trailer also shows some breif footage of what may be a few entirely new weapons. However, seeing as they are still part of the Halo universe, they will undoubtedly be indicative of what players have already seen in the series.

halo reach needler rifle

Needler Rifle: It may just be that this is a variation on the needler, but with the extended stock and strange-looking addition to the top of the gun, it's entirely possible that the Elite are bringing a whole new weapon with them to Reach.

Halo Reach homing rocket

Elite Homing Rocket: This weapon is definitely still a mystery, but appears to be some version of the Fuel Rod Gun that can lock onto targets, and once the projectile is fired, home in on that target as well. It has the potential to be a real game-changing weapon.

Halo Reach grenade launcher

Short-Range Grenade Launcher: This looks like an explosive version of the shotgun, firing out a small explosive for quick and devastating close-up kills. However, other footage does show it taking down a Banshee, so maybe it has the potential for distance kills as well.

Halo Reach single shot rifle

Single-Shot Rifle: This one looks to be a mix between the Battle Rifle and the Sniper Rifle. It has the single-shot and scope of the sniper, but the size, stock, and barrel of the Battle. It will almost certainly be the favorite of mid-range sharpshooters.

New Gameplay Elements

Jetpacks: Definitely the biggest change delivered in this trailer. Traditionally, jetpack gameplay has only complicated multiplayer modes to the point of confusion and eventually boredom. Just look at games like Section 8 or Dark Void. However, that's not to say that jetpacks can't be awesome. Let's just hope Bungie knows what they're getting into with this one.

Assassinations: Another big introduction to the Halo series, although this mechanic has certainly been around and used effectively in other titles. The assassinations here mostly add a visceral quality to the kills. Whereas before players couldn't really get too up close and personal with their enemies, now they are climbing on top of them and viciously stabbing them. This, however, begs the question: Are knives going to be a big part of Halo: Reach?

Combat Roll: This is only breifly showcased a couple of times in the trailer but could have a really big impact on the way this game is played. With current Halo titles, players are forced to fight it out whenever they engage with an enemy (for the most part). But a rolling mechanism could allow players an easy escape, or even a quick assault towards their foes for some up-close shotgun action.

More Explosive Environments: Again, this is only seen for a second or two in the trailer, but the one scene does show what looks like a large fuel tank that, when shot with a rocket, billows into a massive explosion, sending a good 4-5 surrounding enemies hurtling through the air. Maybe Bungie is hoping to add a more strategic element to how players can use the levels to their advantage. Only time will tell.

I'm starting to think it isn't a jetpack at all, but an armor ability version of the grav lift -- just in the form of a jetpack.

I don't think you'll be able to hit whatever button you're suppose to hit and be able to stay up in the air for anything that can remotely be considered actual flying. I think it's more like a jump boost that you can use to achieve really impressive height and the resulting thrusters from this pack are simply there to ensure you don't die as a result of coming down from such a height.

For example, don't expect to be able to stay up in the air and maneuver however you want.

This game looks phenomenal, everything about it minus the Jetpacks look brilliant. The jet pack is just silly, i actually cant believe they are putting it into the game, hopefully it will only be placed on a couple of maps, better still, i hope it gets removed completely after the sheer amount of complaints they will get from the BETA. On the other hand, the roll ability could be awesome if its done right :D
