And man oh man! If they can have the fire spill across the bubble shield in an awesome way so that it looks scary and intense when you're inside of it, I'd be in heaven.

After rounding hills and rises, blasting with plasma rifles and detachable plasma cannons as we go, we make it to the entrance to a mountainside tunnel pass-through, heavily defended by twin cannon mounts, Grunts and Brutes.
Let's talk about Brutes for a moment. These guys have gone from being bullet-absorbing wastes of digital space to some of the most interesting enemies in the game. The AI they demonstrate is astounding. We watched as they used a combination of overwhelming physical strength and gunplay, shooting grenades out of the air and successfully landing some impressive and painful sniper shots. These guys also tower over grunts and their new armour makes them look really vicious and imposing.
They're not nearly as resilient as in Halo 2, however. Amusingly, they will even kneel down in a crouch to embrace their own death if they're mortally wounded or know they're about to get run down.
More here, it really does sound incredible!
They also say it seems as if Halo 3 has the best AI of any game on the market.

Oh yeah and 4 player co-op. They said they might not even have co-op over Live, and then they announce this; doesn't sound like over-promising and under-delivering to me.

I simply meant the graphics side. Not achieving what they first showed/promised.
Still, I think it looks pretty good from what we have seen, but the jaggies in these new SP screens... WTF is up with that?

What concerns me a little more, graphically, in the screen I posted is the animation. Note how the Brutes look to be in the same, rigid, action figure stance. Animation is a huge part of what separates next gen games. Boring, repetitive, stiff, jerky, rough seamed and unnatural animations that don't transition well are a big negative. We haven't seen enough Halo 3 to know what the animation is like, but seeing a couple Brutes in the "Action Figure" stance isn't encouraging. Neither is a group of them in the open in such a stance.
Of course it may be an early shot as there are little atmospherics like all the grass and undergrowth they have been raving about that reactions to player interaction and explosions.
The fans have spoken. Concerning the graphics of the Halo 3 Beta: "There's so many little effects and things going on that make this game pretty much 2nd only to Gears at the moment."
On the other hand who here was expecting 4 player co-op, Forge and Saved films after the launch trailer? Even in terms of graphical features, I haven't seen something removed which was "promised" in any way. Sure, they've changed the armour, I happen to prefer it but I'm a purist. I didn't see much PR explicitly pimping the armour texture after E3 06 though...
Completely different in my eyes.
Ive not seen tons of jaggies from what I've had access to but such things are subjective, dependent on TV's and the like. I'd be very suprised if it transpired that Halo 3 had no AA, put it that way.
And really, after watching the E3 06 vid and making of, the animation is the only outstanding difference. The helmet reflection I'm willing to write off simply because what he was looking at was an incredibly luminous source (the ark, harsh badlands in the desert). And they cut the bump mapping for artistic reasons (still not 100% sure I buy that, but eh).
The environments look about the same. The Covenant ships look exactly the same, in some ways they look a bit better now (more reflective banshees). And the only real thing missing from the scenery are the particle effects and extensive DOF used in the cutscene.
I'm not going to say that the screens look as good as the media released in 06. But I say its more of a difference in the sense like how the Mad World trailer looked to Gears of War gameplay. I think doing a montage on a game with so little released media pretty much shoots itself in the foot. Can't judge a game that way. If they'd released a few gameplay videos of those scenes, then we'd be in business. But 2-3 secs really doesn't convey much of a scene at all.
The best example I can give is to compare these shots
