For me it just feel like Bioware is taking ME in the completely wrong direction. If they keep this up ME 3 will be little less than a crappy clone of Gears. It just feels like the game removes some of the RPG elements, tries (and fails) to improve the shooting and the caps it all off by implementing boring, time consuming mini games all over the place (what f**ing braindead retard actually thought that the scanning minigame was a good idea? It consumes HOURS just to upgrade your stuff). And the character stats distribution? it was fairly thin in the first game, but somehow they manage to spread it even thinner here. It feel like i could have the outo leveling turned on and not even notice the difference.

Basically, they just tossed the RPG out the window and brought on a load of bad shooting instead. Especially after Dragon Age i must say that the RPG bits of ME2 feel very much tacked on in a lame attempt to hide the shitty shooter underneath.

I expected so much more from bioware. Oh well, at least it has a stable framerate and no pop-ins :P

And yeah, i also like the first game a bunch, probably played it through 3 or 4 times.

The game is good so far, i'd say on par with ME1, but i've only played a few hrs so i'll see how the rest pans out. But to say the game is crap, you have to be some sort of idiot or fanboy to make such statements when the game is clearly a good.

Aside from being pretty and having expensive voice actors, what does the game do so well? It fails in the RPG department and it fails in the shooter department. The production values are high, but as a game i think it's pretty "meh". Dragon Age superior by far if you ask me, even though it lacks the cinematic feel of ME2.

I guess what i really want to ask the people saying this is great is something like this: Since when did cinematic become the same thing as a good game?

Does it actually fail in both those respects though? I could see the RPG elements not being as good as in Dragon Age....or I could see the shooting not being as good as in Gears, but it fails? Doubt it.

It's not, but being cinematic can comlement a game well and certainly never hurts.

Great no Very good yes, the game does allot well, story/combat/rpg elements (even though they are stripped down a bit), is it as deep as dragon age no, but Mass Effect is a different beast we all knew that going into the game, as i said for me its on par with ME1 on the enjoyment level so far, and is in no way a crap boring game.

Ronsauce: it completely fails to engage me from an RPG point of view and i really find the shooting to be lackluster. For me it fails on both accounts. I tells it's story well enough but for me that's not enough to call it a good game. Then again i've only played for a few hours, perhaps i haven't seen all it has to offer yet. So far i can say that i don't think it deserves a 96 on metacritic though.

People are allowed to not like something that's popular :)

The two hours I played were good and I'm invested. Whilst I can see that a lot of the changes make sense and are well justified from a game design perspective, I do wonder if they've gone a bit too far.

Borderlands was a game that had an infinite amount of weapons, relatively simple class system & skill tree but proper levelling. It was still accessible and commercially successful. The weapon / inventory system in the original Mass Effect was a mess, but did they really need to simplify weapons, experience gain and the skill tree to the extent that they have? Mass Effect 2 has less "RPG elements" than Borderlands when you break it down to the mechanics.

On the other hand, Mass Effect 2 also leans very heavily on conversations and making decisions, y'know actually "role-playing". Which is the real RPG? One way of looking at it is to suggest Bioware have just stripped it right down to the bare bone essentials.

deftangle: I agree that player actions affecting story is what really makes any RPG but so far all my choices have felt...well, unimportant. Like do i use charm or shoot the guy? Does it matter? Does it change the game in any way? I'm going to go ahead and guess that the story will branch a few times, like in ME 1 where you have like 2 or 3 actual choices to make. But why did they take away the weapons and mods system from the first game? It was fun and worked, aside from the clutter in the inventory, which could have been easily fixed. Why strip down the skills? It just feels like they dumbed it down further than they should have and further than they needed to.

You serious? This is basically something you could tell about every fricking crpg out there. None of the current games has so deeply shaped choices as you would like have. But I tell you what, you will see a lot of your choices in ME1 echoing in ME2. Personally, I wish I had some things differently in ME1 by seeing how they turned out in ME2.
And everyone who says that ME2 isn't crpg because it doesn't have enough numbers or inventory was stripped away is just moron. Seriously, I much more prefer the ME2 approach to items than the mess that was in ME1, when you turned to gel or sold 95% of the stuff you collected. Other things, like upgrades, are still there. I got a feeling you guys complain about this game after 2 hours of play. Yes, there are less skills, but why? Because you don't spend points on paragon/renegade skills, because you don't spend skills to hack/decrypt. Besides, you can learn new skills later in the game (and some of them are badass).
In my opinions there are only 2 things that Bioware dropped a ball with: lack of weapon stats (descriptions are nearly not enough) and a freaking mini game with scanning planets (which will be a MAJOR pain in the ass when replaying the game). Other than that, amazing game. And if anyone will say that Borderlands is more crpg than ME2 I will punch them in the nose and laugh in their face.

I feel they took a step forward in everything aside from what Deft mentioned. Those elements are too simplified in my mind. I loved changing the appearance of my characters repeatedly. I also loved continually getting better guns and not just upgrading them.
I believe they made a lot of necessary fixes for 2 but when 3 happens there had better be ample armors/weapons and a complex tree like in 1. I do not like how simple the trees are now, it's the one major downside to the game.

It's not perfect, b/c no game ever is. But considering how minor the flaws are IMO, the insanely high quality of what they did right greatly outweighs the insignificance of what they might have done wrong, depending on your view.

A little deeper customization would be nice, yes, but in the end it's one of the best stories with some of the best characters in any game this gen. As for the combat "failing", I couldn't agree less. IMO the combat is one of the game's strongest aspects. Better and more satisfying than most full-fledged shooters in fact.

More than anything I just really like Bioware and all their work, I'm really happy to see them getting such rave reviews. A 96% on gamerankings is well deserved guys!

One thing is for certain, RPG fans are going to have to really voice their opinions on ME3 if they want any of the rpg elements returned for the sequel. I don't know, maybe RPG fans weren't vocal enough. I mean the people who whined and complained about everything from the Mako to the elevator rides (because now we have load screens instead :p) got everything thing they wanted from Bioware. I really believe they got the game they wanted by protesting the loudest. Maybe RPG fans were a little too silent while those who aggressively protested ME1's gameplay mechanics convinced Bioware that this is what we all wanted.

I also believe that RPG fans never once guessed that the rpg elements were really at risk of being gutted, that's why so many of us were caught completely by surprise.

I've gotten into a few discussions about this with gamers at work, nothing nasty mind you, everyone is civil. Some still insist on calling ME2 an RPG, but if you took a game like Gears of War, gave it a dialogue tree and customizable armor, it still wouldn't be an RPG would it? Of course not. If RPG gamers really want ME to return to it's role playing roots, they're going to have to complain and whine just as loud as the gamers who complained and whined about ME1.

Maybe Bioware will listen.

Sorry my post there was mainy aimed at dip shits on the whats up board last night.

They seem to think that because i am absolutely gutted over a game i was looking forward to that i am a fanboy (yes i prefer ps3 over 360 and 360 over wii... so fucking what, i got all three think i am allowed to choose which i prefer)

It was like when i slated the shit out of halo 2 everyone jumped on my back and tried raping me ring, but now years later everyone agrees that halo 2 single player was absolute shit compared to the others
(halo 2 compared to most games of its time was good, but compared to halo 1 it was shyt)
