I think what they are doing instead is actually better. It's something you can replay more often and casually. Co-op in WAW wasn't fun at all.

Prior to the release of MW2, I promise I'll finish the campaign in COD4! I think!
Well, it should only take you about 10 minutes. Slight exaggeration.

COD4's online is fantastic - I still play it, like many others - so more of the same is acceptable. It's a shame that they don't plan to extend the length of the game's singleplayer campaign, but I can have few complaints if it offers the same kind of thrill.

Honestly.. that's a slight exaggeration? I'm assuming that's a total bullshit statement and in fact COD4 is no shorter than previous Call of Duty games and probably no shorter than the vast majority of other single player FPS. Add to that a MP mode that packs in endless replayability (I'm currently around 1000 hours).. and I see very little reason to bitch.

I read that it would be longer than COD4. Even then, I thought it was a great length and it includes what has to be the best multiplayer game in the last 10 years. Or something.

Alright, don't get your knickers in a twist. No game is perfect, and I saw plenty of 'reason to bitch' when it came to the campaign length. Maybe I just rushed it - although the length of it was roughly the same each time I've played, even on the harder difficulties - but it took me just a few hours to complete the singleplayer mode, and it was by far the shortest I've experienced in a very long time. Of course, there's no need for them to drag it out just for the sake of it, but I was very disappointed that it finished so quickly.

I guess IW can take that as a compliment, as I never really wanted the campaign to end in COD4. No game is perfect as I've said, but that doesn't mean developers shouldn't strive to achieve it. By maintaining the incredible thrill COD4's campaign offered, but increasing the length (if only slightly), I'll be one satisfied gamer.

There's no need to get so protective, especially when you haven't even completed the campaign yourself.

COD4 was short there is no trying to deny it, but it was an incredible ride while it lasted.

i thought the co-op in WAW was awesome. what i didnt like was that it kinda hurt the single player (kinda like RE5)

but ultimately i agree, i think a seperate co-op will work better. just so they can focus on single player to offer a really good narrative and set peice heavy experience, and a co-op mode for multple players.

It all depends on how it's handled, I guess. I gave GRAW a hard time for having segregated co-op, on a different engine with somewhat different gameplay even, but I feel that this is a little different. GRAW had the benefit in its campaign of revolving squarely around squad gameplay.. you know.. aside from all of the horrid lonewolf scenarios. Gack.

But looking back on GRAW... the co-op missions may have been my favorite part of the game.

And I didn't hate the co-op in World At War either.. but the campaign wasn't actually all that great anyway. The additional content was nice though, from co-op (I liked the card system) to the zombie survival bullshit. It was a good package. It was just killed by the somewhat lackluster pacing of the campaign as a whole and the lackluster everything else compared to its big brother.

I'm down with additional mutliplayer co-op content in any form, I guess. If they can extend the value of the package, that is, and it's not just a gimmick. I think that it's wise of them to pick up on where Treyarch left off in a way. Treyarch did not run very far with the ball but there were some decent concepts buried in World At War that deserve to be revisited.

And @ blmbox; I guess it depends on what you're looking for in a game. I love the multiplayer in Call of Duty so much that the campaign seems like a bit of a sidebar. They put a lot of effort into its design and for the first time in the franchises history they told a narrative.. to me that's more than enough for a package that has more replayability than most. But then again, to me, it's a bit like bitching about Battlefield 2 not having a campaign. Doesn't bother me a bit.

Ironically.. I actually enjoyed the UT3 campaign though, as silly as it was.

35 Modern Warfare 2 Random Requests!

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is quite likely to be the biggest game of this year. We're banking on E3 in the summer to tell us more. Until then it's nothing but guess work as the first trailer from the sequel was nothing but a dirty tease.

When Infinity Wards asked the internet what it would like to see in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, the internet responded with...

Quote:
All language and spelling has been left unedited for extra comedy value - expect swear words

a female character named Tina would be cool
Less treyarch
Oh, and an enemy called Pvt. Trey Arch to shoot in the arse.
punishment for team killing rather than just penalizing respawn time

I dont know why people are so much against Treyarch...!

From Wikipedia:

Quote:
The game was the second best-selling game for November 2008 in the United States selling over 1.41 million units, and sold twice as many units in the UK in its first week compared to Call of Duty 4, becoming the third fastest-selling video game in the UK. It received a mixture of reviews. Some criticized the game for returning to World War II and not building upon Call of Duty 4, whereas others praised its portrayal of the gritty, dark side of the war. It was also criticized for jumping years ahead during the plot, but was also praised for the new co-operative mode introduced.

Plus the multiplayer on Live was a blast to play!

I bought and finished COD4 today in honour of the upcoming MW2. I always feel a bit silly when sequels are announced to popular games and I don't even know what I thought about the other one. I got and played through Lost Planet a couple of weeks ago too, in light of the LP2 announcement.

I've always avoided COD because I thought the WW2 motif was even more tired than serious face, realistic war shooters in general, but COD4 always had me somewhat more interested due to its contemporary setting. I had some brief bouts with COD2 when the demo hit Live back in.. you know.. the creation of time.. and I couldn't quite put my finger on what I didn't like about it and assumed it was the motif.. but COD4 kinda brings me nearer to the source of my concern I think.

Because despite being superficially more to my taste, I really can't seem to feel involved in it. There's some kind of disconnect between me and the craziness that goes on, and I mostly attribute that to the - to me - absolutely shocking linearity of it. I'm not a stranger to linear games, on the contrary I think sandbox is in many ways a retarded direction for games to be going in, but this thing is like being stuck in those gates at the supermarket and you kinda have to back up and wobble a bit for them to open so you can proceed.

There are SO many times in this game that I was either AHEAD of the invisible cart they expect me to ride in, or hopelessly far behind it and when I finally came running in the right direction it was like they were waiting for me to come through the door so they could yell SURPRISE! and sing happy birthday to me. But instead kicked a door open and killed guys that were goners from the second they shared the same animation as the door kickers and couldn't be killed by my gunfire because they were too busy gearing up for their scripted deaths.

The constant back and forth between the game not giving two shits about me (stand in the way of people in their pre-determined animation path and you get shoved right the fuck away like an insignificant piece of scenery) and the game stopping to a complete halt unless I stand in the right position just really bummed me out completely.

I can't tell if this is truly 2007 stuff and me playing it in 2009 is what makes me react so strongly to it.. I mean it's obviously awesomely animated and technically very immersive but the way every event is so mechanical is really super jarring for me.

I realise that most people play COD4 exclusively for the multiplayer so I suppose this is a complete non-issue to them, but for me in my theoretical anticipation of MW2 I really hope they work on this kind of stuff. Sooooo many games have done the heavily scripted thing and at the same time felt like it wrapped around the player.. Half Life 2 for pete's sake! And to be honest, all those games that "ripped off" Call of Duty.. stuff like Resistance and Killzone 2.. they were actually a lot better at hiding the fact that they were essentially roller coaster rides too.

Upon venting my thoughts my friend told me that this is what Call of Duty has always been like and that I'm just not used to it, and if I can't get used to it I should just play something else. I guess that's a good point.

Regardless, I'm still cautiously interested in MW2.

I never felt like Resistance "ripped off" Call of Duty at all. The simularities are purely cosmetic. Resistance's campaign is something straight out of 90's in terms of design. It's a good game but some archaic choices really held it back.

I am not however saying that Call of Duty 4's campaign is any better, because I have not played it yet either. It does seem promising though that IW keeps attempting to evolve the COD experience for the single player portion of the game though. COD4 was the first game in the franchise with a real narrative, and if you read the GI reveal on MW2 it seems like they're taking a lot of the criticism that people had of its design to heart.

Yeah Resistance has its own set of issues for sure. I haven't really looked at much of the MW2 stuff yet in fear of there perhaps being some allusions to the first game that I wanted to find in it myself. It's certainly good to hear that they're taking feedback to heart because last time someone did that so candidly has to be Gears 2, and it really had a tremendous impact on the quality of the campaign.

I liked a lot of the things COD4 did.. none of which I'll mention specifically because it's impossible not to spoil them.. The prospect of them further developing those ideas alone has me signing up for Modern Warfare 2.

Aye, Simon you're right about the involvement. It annoyed the fuck out of me sometimes because it just doesn't make sense for them to shoot some enemies far away instead of killing the ones just flanking me right before their nose.

The only mission that wasn't like that was the Sniper one. If you obeyed the commands (if you were fast enough to follow that is) it really felt like having an impact and both of you clinging on to their life.

The sniper mission was good, but even that was extremely scripted with hardly any (if any) room to do your own thing and tackle the mission your own way. Every single COD game is like this and MW2 will be exactly the same.

i agree, i still replay the mission every now and then. it's incredibly linear and scripted, but sometimes that works for a game better then if you had choices. i dont think that mission would have been anywhere near as awesome as it was if you could have just ran around with a rocket launcher, or avoided all those cool little moments like hiding in the cornfield while the tank and soldiers walk by.
