I don't know why they wanted one trigger completely unused; it might affect some other vehicle later in the game which uses both triggers and the 'A' button.
If that's the case I guess I can change it again. Not an ideal situation but it's better than the alternative "Failed" mission.
edit
yep, it turns a normal vehicles acceleration into the "A" button.
damn.
It comes with the PC version, but I've been waiting to start it until I finish the main story.
Would it spoil anything to go ahead and play it as a distraction, being how I just discovered the Badlands in the main game?
I haven't played the bonus mission yet so I have no idea if it would spoil anything. I'll probably wait and play it after I have completed the story mode.
Hmm strange that your controller won't work with the default settings. I have a 360 wired controller, default drivers and Win7 64bit and I have no problems at all. It says configuration = Xbox 360 controller in the settings menu. Only thing that I could imagine to cause problems are some custom drivers for the controller.

It's not a spoiler per se, but if you wanna figure it out yourself I'll tag it just in case
You need to make the "crown" of the building fall by taking out the bits it's attached to the top with. Just kinda "trace" the crown's structure to the points of attachment and remove those with the nano forge. It'll come "showering" down and strip the entire building entirely. If there are still bits left, just shave those off with the missiles.
As for that extra mission, "Demons of The Badlands", it is a spoiler for sure. I don't find the story particularly spectacular so I can't say it's the end of the world if you do spoil it or anything, but it makes more sense to play it after I think.

But about the demolition challenges, I agree that they're a lot of fun, and while I think there's a good amount in there in terms of how it helps pad a game that isn't just about that stuff, I think they could easily put out a Portal type sub game/DLC based entirely around that part. It's such a powerful physics engine, and it is genuinely fun to kinda run around and gauge how to do something beforehand, then employ that strategy and have it all come together. Or, you know, fall apart. :D

I hope they tweak driving for the next Red Faction game (which I read might be shown at E3 woot!).

I have no problem using the 360 wired controller at all, just some of the bindings are shared between different vehicles for different things, and changing one can screw things up for another.
"A" button was the default setting for firing tank rockets, which is terrible as that uses the same thumb for aiming.
Changing it to the right trigger also changed the other 4 wheel vehicles "primary fire" to RT (because they share that control slot), which used to be acceleration, which means I would have to go back in and change acceleration for normal vehicles to "A" which I don't want.
I'll either leave it alone, or change it depending on if I'm in a tank or whatever.
I don't know, maybe I could get used using "A" to accelerate the 4 wheelers, but it's not even analog :/
edit
or, maybe my default config did get messed up. In that case I suppose I could delete the config file so it resets... if that works in this game.
Tank: LS drive, RS aim and RT fire.
Vehicles: RT gas, LT brake, A fire.
New patch for the PC version: http://community.redfaction.com/forums/topic/7898
Nothing huge but nice to have an option to turn DX10 off.
I played a bit MP mode and it's actually quite fun but there is like no one playing the game. It took me around 20 minutes to find a game yesterday :/

Is there anyway I could talk you into taking a screenshot of your key bindings in-game?
I want to see if maybe there are some differences there.
If not that's cool.

That patch sounds good enough to download, though I have some reservations about it as the last one didn't seem to fix the slow diagonal problem with analog sticks (like it was supposed to), mostly notable when doing Shotgun missions.
I was actually wondering if it got fully installed after cancelling the Raptr install part.
edit
DUDE! nevermind :D
I just loaded it up to figure out what was going on and it somehow fixed itself (the default controls I mean).
Ah, now I can play right.
I just yanked a tank by some idiot EDF soldier and it worked like a charm.
*PHEW*
About the patch, I hear people who run this game in DX9 get a ton of performance, only losing AO and Sunshafts, so that will be nice for certain areas in the game.
Now the vehicles don't feel so out of control and I can control an EDF property 'destruction run' better too.
No more dying before knowing where it's coming from.
Amazing difference.
DX9 mode doesn't affect my performance at all though, so I think I'll just stick with DX10 and its extra prettiness.
Crazy though, all this time I was playing in fast motion and didn't even know it (it's still playable at the old speed, but now I know what it's supposed to feel like and I prefer it)
-----
Really though, I'm surprised it took this long for the game to get to this point.
It shouldn't have even been released like it was.
These companies need to stop pawning off the PC version to some CrackerJack port house without any quality control.
It almost never turns out right, and it leaves [whoever did the port] discretion on whether the game gets patched.
I guess we got lucky this time. It's taken a while, but at least it got fixed :)
(can't say the same for most other console to pc ports)
Now, as long as this patch didn't screw anything else up, I think we're good, unless they want to be kind and optimize the game more :D (greedy)
legal_hd.bik
logo_thq_hd.bik
logo_volition_hd.bik
Now it just goes straight to the title screen; much better :)
I didn't have any problems patching with those file names altered but, if you do just change them back temporarily.
I guess the directory would be different if you aren't using the retail version.
Ah yes I think I'll do the same for the logo videos now :) thanks.
Sun shafts looks pretty nice on DX10. Especially when you destroy a building and see all those sun shafts move. The other effect is harder to see when you are actually playing the game :P

I've been playing in little spurts, so I'm not even close to that far.
I'm a couple missions from liberating the Badlands still.
Did you start playing the downloadable stuff?

But yeah, games are coming out at a certain pace so if I don't finish games at a comparably speedy pace they'll stack up and the pile of unplayed stuff will eventually fall over and crush me. I don't RUSH through games though, each is given its due time for sure, it's just that when I start playing something I play that game only until it's done. I used to crack everything open when I got it and hop around games to the point where my playing them became really sloppy and unfocused, and I'd just end up with piles of unfinished games. It's worth so much more to me to be able to look back at a complete experience.

I still need a couple of games from different genres to freshen my mind though.
I'll usually have an FPS/TPS, some kind of racing game, and maybe an adventure or little indie game going.
I can't jump between three or four different FPS though, or I end up mixing the controls and missions in my head.
Like some mad scientist.
Halloween.
