Isn't this a bit of a double standard coming from the dude who kept calling for the total reinvention of the Tomb Raider franchise.. amusingly enough, against the grain of public opinion on these forums where people still love TR? Surely you must know that RE4 has more in common with its franchise history than just the name of the box.
as i said in that rant up above....its impossible to avoid losing fans when you change something. and similarly, its impossivle to avoid losing fans by keeping things the same. as simon said, its preference, and i never said it was anything else. im not trying to change peoples opinions on game, just put across my own point of view. *I* feel a game like tomb raider, where we are 9 games in with the same old shitty combat NEEDS a new combat system. the reviews complaints about said combat just help strengthen my own opionion on the matter.

games like resi i didnt want to change but it did, thats just personal preference, i know people like resi 4 and resi 5 more so then the old games, and im not trying to tell them they shouldnt like it, because unlike my argument concerning resi 5 and the OPTION to have action controls, my views on resi 4/5 being substantially WORSE then that of the old games is just my own opinion.

at the end of the day there is no scientific way to measure a games quality. it's just one opinion verses another. where some may consider resi 5 to be the best resident evil yet, others, such as myself think resi1/REmake is the peak of tha franchise. i just like to discuss my thoughts and feeling, just as i'm sure you guys do too, its a discussion forum after all.

maybe i should put a disclaimer in my sig stating everything i type is that of my own opinion? but honestly, i thought people would have just assumed as much?

Yea I think its a bit shortsighted to point fingers at people for double standards, many posters on here can be accused of that, including you Grift ;)

Most of the discussions on this forum are based around bias in some form or another.

You can't start yapping your trap without being biased since everything you say will be based on experiences. It's not like a game has a measurable amount of goodness. If we could empirically prove that a game is awesome there would be little to argue about and that would eliminate the function of this forum :P

I just played the PS3 and 360 demos back to back and it looks like the 360 version plays better. It pains me to say this because I was set on buying the PS3 version (which turns out to be plagued with framerate issues).

If Resident Evil had stayed where it was, I have no doubt that it would be in the same boat as Silent Hill and Alone in the Dark right now. I'd rather it be thriving where it is now and not dead in the water in some sort of confused state. A game that I would just overlook for something else coming out. If it weren't for RE 4 you wouldn't be playing games like Dead Space.

Also Zelda/Link was a PERFECT example. Not only did it make an evolution into 3d the way Mario did, but in a mind blowing way (Ocarina). Then on Gamecube after Majora it turned to cel shaded beauty, which while not the best game (I thought it was too easy), the engine was responsible for Twilight Princess. None of it's games have been terrible and it has taken some big chances.
Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 were examples you give of games that could have headed into excellence. Unfortunately Sega broke apart and lost a lot of it's talent. You can't really blame them for terrible Sonic games when they were pretty much destroyed after the fall of Dreamcast and all those dev teams broke off.

You can't really tell people Killzone 2's controls are part of the game and people need to adapt, then come in here and tell us RE4 controls are archaic and need to change.

yes, purely graphical/artistic updates on the same gameplay and structure. its a bad example.

and i havent told people to get used to the killzone 2 controls. why? becasue killzone 2 offeres plenty of options. if you dont like the default controls, it alows you to play it essentially like cod4. win/win situation.

what i've been saying in the killzone 2 thread/front page comments is concerning the characters gun movements. in terms of actual controls there really isnt anything to get used to, unless of course you've never played an FPS in your life, in which case you're bound to have a problem.

as i've said. RE5 could have done with the run and gun control OPTION just to let the game appeal to more people. killzone 2 is an example of a game that after people asked for cod4-like controls, they added them. they didnt have to, much like capcom dont have to add action controls, but they did anyway, becasue OPTIONS are good. despite what certain people think.

Hello all, i have been a long time reader of these forums but decided it was time i posted something so i would like to start off by saying hi to all the regulars here.

I have been reading the various comments and its a difficult thing for the game to please both new and old resident evil fans in terms of controls but i do agree with KORNdog that having extra options is always a good thing.

But how about the option to move AND aim but when you shoot you cannot move? This would mean you cant run around and shoot at the same time but it would enable you to maybe have that little bit more freedom. Might not make much of a difference but would work well with the new ability to strafe which kind of seems a bit pointless on its own.

Also, i don't agree with statements people make that the controls have been kept to the same old formula in order to make the game more on the edge and suspenseful, because i think Dead Space managed to have a far better control method and ALSO be scary, suspenseful and edgy. I think more thought should definately have been given to Resi5's control scheme. Still, i love the franchise a hell of alot and look forward to it's release with great anticipation!

Does anyone know yet if Sherry from Res2 is likely to be in this game? I think that would be awesome...

Resident Evil is not set in the future and is outside. Dead Space is in the future and has an entirely different enemy and setting.
They are related but different things work for each because of the enemies and settings.

I give up though.

You are a lost cause if you feel like this:

Is merely a graphical upgrade of this:

Let alone ignoring the jump from Snes to 64 that created one of the greatest games ever made and attempting to discredit the Mario 64 revolution.

it is a graphical upgrade of OOT, sure its got a different story and characters, but at its core its the same game all over again. it even controls the same (if you play the GC version of both games)

i mean, i'd love to hear how twilight princess evolved the series to the extent resident evil 4 did with that franchise? becasue the way i see it, it has similar controls, the same freaking area but bigger, same structure of "find item in dungeon, boss coincidentally needs said item to be defeated)

it is a bad example of a series that has evolved. because beyond the visuals, there really isnt much difference. they're not bad games, far from it, they're just incredibly similar in the way they play.

Except silent Hill and Alone in the Dark have never been main stream, at least nowhere near the success of Resident Evil so thats not really a good example.

*sigh*

But thats not the reason why those games have ended up the way they have.

Hasn't Alone in the Dark changed hands and I know the last Silent Hill transfered over to Double Helix during development.

tbh if silent hill and alone in the dark are examples of anything its that change has damaged them, not only in terms of the developers, but in terms of their direction. silent hill the room was bad because it tried something new (central hub room, not having an open inventory, enemies which dont die (ghosts) etc etc)

and similarly, it was the change in gameplay combined with poor execution of such changes which effecively killed alone in the dark. it controlled differently (and horribly). its new gameplay elements where badly implimented, the new inventory system was terrible.

change has done nothing but harm those series.

No the room was bad because they only made half a game and then made you go through that half 2 times. The ghosts and weapons that break weren't brilliant either but i still say the backtracking is the worst. Good game otherwise though. And it's not change that made the games suck balls, it's crappy developers. As far as i know the original team silent stopped working on the SH games after 3, and there was only Yamaoka left when they made The Room.

I agree. The Room is like the one very rare example where I feel the story makes trudging through some really dire gameplay worth it. Just the setup to that game puts most other games (and a lot of horror movies aswell) to absolute shame. I'd say "Room of Angel" is probably Yamaoka's best work for the Silent Hill series too, so that's not a shabby opener.

I also think the focus on action somewhat screwed it up gameplay wise. Combat in SH has always been kinda wonky, but the saving grace has been what used to be really clever puzzles. The Room's over-reliance on combat and backtracking quickly turned it into a bit of a grind. Take away the puzzles from any Silent Hill and that's essentially what they are too.

For me though what kills my interest in Homecoming has little to do with the scares being leveled out by a overly competent combat system, and more to do with some kind of Absolute Silent Hill approach to the narrative, settings and characters. It's also apparently completely comprehensible first time through(!) and I reckon that takes away way more from that series than being able to wrestle scary nurses.

God this thread is about Resident Evil 5! You can almost.. SMELL the evil being all.. resident and fivey.

thats exactly how i felt about resident evil 4. the removal of puzzles and explorations (to find keys and items to unlock new doors etc) removed a huge part of resident evils identity. the action heavy gameplay ,as you said with silent hill 4, made resi 4 a bit of a grind. i just didnt enjoy it as much.

I see. That confirms the worries of quite a few of us here and we said it a million times before. by designing the game for CO-OP, the single player experience was affected :(

Anyway, that magazine is not the best of sources of reviews but it still could be on to something.
