That might be the case for some people, but other people want run'n'gun, which would take it even further away from its classic charm.

Its happens with every great game that keeps the same formula, just look at Halo 3
It's not the same formula though. It's a formula that has only existed for ONE game. When you look at it from the perspective of franchises in videogames, it is a VERY young formula.

It's not HATE, it's called loving the franchise for what it offered when it was what it was.

RE4 has changed so much and lost most of what defined Resident Evil even though RE4 is a BRILLIANT game and a great achievement for Capcom. So, it's not so much hate as wanting the series to perhaps bring back some of its charms.
I actually think that the other REs were really on their last legs, Tinks believes it was a huge risk that Capcom took, I think it was a necessity. Code Veronica was the best of all "traditional" REs, and probably the last one I could take with some horrible gameplay flaws that followed the series since the first..........and I hope I don't have to list them.

I loved RE, yet I only played it once through.

Well In that case just look at Halo 2. Yes it is a very young formula, but the hate comes from the fact that RE5 plays very similar to RE4. It doesnt matter how young the formula is, Its still the same formula.

Halo simply went the wrong direction with it's sequels
There are other franchises you could use for a better example that have stayed true to a previous iteration and remained a great game
I would direct attention to my response to Lebato though, as Capcom has done a lot to change this newest addition, unlike Bungie with Halo

Hmmm I could say the same about RE.
There are other franchises you could use for a better example that have stayed true to a previous iteration and remained a great game
But RE4 didn't stay true to its previous iterations, not just in game mechanics but story line (where the hell are the zombies), 4 and 5 are basically a different genre to the previous games.
I would direct attention to my response to Lebato though, as Capcom has done a lot to change this newest addition, unlike Bungie with Halo
And there lays the problem, they changed it in a way that is neither here not there it is stuck between 2 genres and thats where the hate is coming from, shooter fans want a more fluid run and gun game and old fans want a survial horror game, the only people this game is pleasing are the RE4 fans.

Yes but Resident Evil existed for a very long time before something like 4 was made.

Capcom originally kept trying an idea, then finally made the best product with what they were doing (Code Veronica)
Now they have a new take on it, so they're going to try and make it even better now. Why do you want them to instantly turn around after making something new, and completely redo an almost perfect game?
They're making a new game in which it enables you to play co-op now too, which is a major addition to this whole formula we're talking about. That alone changes the formula quite a bit right?! How much work do you think it takes to take Resident Evil 4, and put another player there with you while keeping the same frame rate and quality?

With Halo, they never changed the core gameplay, and stacked shit on it (mind you the matchmaking I recognize is brilliant).
It ruined the simplistic gameplay that originally made it so great. (this is why I'm someone who hated Perfect Dark)
Single player was great in the original, and in it's sequels it suffered because multiplayer was such a concern.

Halo is a different story than Resident Evil all together. Two completely different genre's, and two entirely different companies. A comparison that really isn't a good one to make

There are more RE4 fans than any other. I'd rather see them work through what they have now then to go back to what they originally had. If there was an issue with fans and sales weren't great, they would do that.
This game is also pleasing Dead Space fans, as they are very much alike.
All they can do is make a game that is incredibly polished and well done, you can't please everyone.
Also why does it have to fall into a genre? Would you rather have every game following the same rules and guidelines? Great games are great because they push boundaries and challenge things. Innovation isn't made by staying true to a specific genre.

Perfect? well thats your opinion not mine, and many would agree that 5 (at least the demo) is anything but close to perfection, also I never said they should redo anything, there is no point wishing for a game to change as its not going to happen, especially at this stage of development.
Also why does it have to fall into a genre?
Because thats just the way video games are i guess, the same as any other form of entertainment.
Great games are great because they push boundaries and challenge things. Innovation isn't made by staying true to a specific genre.
Come on now, RE isn't innovating on anything really, at least in the sense that hasn't been done before in other games and even then the mechanics that it does use have been done many times better in other games, I don't see any boundaries being pushed here to be honest.

Co-op may excite some people but i still think that some games should be left as single player experiences and RE is one of them, even when playing a single player game now it's ruined because you have to worry about an AI character.

If I'm not mistaken, there are previous iterations where you have to worry about AI characters as well, while not being directly co-op.

RE is innovative in the sense that it crosses lines so it's not definable, just like you pointed out. The best games from my experience, are the ones that are unlike any other.

What games are like Resident Evil 4, before it was ever released, that did anything it had better?

Also RE 4 wasn't perfect? What was wrong with it besides the fact it didn't stay with whatever bullshit you enjoyed in the old ones? It was an incredibly polished game

Gosh! no one is taking any credit from Resident Evil 4 so why are getting so worked up over this ?

We DO NOT want the game to go back to its clunky controls or bad camera if that's what you think but there are core elements in the Resident Evil franchise that simply have been thrown out the window. Opening a door and not knowing what's behind, a proper puzzle not one that involves shooring a gun, the sense of isolation, fear and not knowing what to anticipate and where the hell is my jumping out of my seat I used to experience playing the old resident evils ?

I'm all for Better graphics, better controls but not at the price of throwing title defining qualities. it's like playing tomb Raider without any tombs (Angel of Dakrness, Im looking at you). I hope you see my point :)

personally i'd love to see a resi title that was like 3.5. when it used the code veronica 3D backgrounds and moving camera, but also used a closer camera and an over the shoulder aiming system. even the enemies we saw in the early footage looked more interesting then what we've had before (ghosts, clockwork dolls)

it seemed the devs where originally going to try and compete with silent hill by making the game a lot scarier with the use of darkness and a flashlight to create a more claustrophobic atmosphere. but then somewhere down the line they decided to go the action route.

im probably alone in this, but i'd have much prefered resi 4 to have been this....

That is the Re 4 I wanted not the one wich was released. I remember when playing Re 2 and the damned Tyrant always following you. That gave the game an anxious feeling and for the first time playing a videogame I was really scared. Now Re franchise has turned out into a simple shooting game, though not bad I don't like its approach.

IMO RE 4 is far from perfect. It is a good action game but as I have siad before I don't like this new approach for the series, and I want the old feeling to come back again. I want to be afraid once again, to look behind me when I am playing a RE game to be sure that no one is behind me and I want to experience once again the unknown that lies behind every door you open.
Damn you Capcom and bring us another horror game.

Really? There was a guy in a lab coat that had another nasty looking fellow growing out of his arm and he came in 3 stages of nastyness I think. I can't say I know about any dropping through roofs and walls.

Tyrant was in RE1 and he really just broke a glass jar, so he's not that special. Oh yeah he killed Wesker too, but that didn't work. Fucking failure.

Nope its the big guy who walks around the police station in his trench coat, definately RE2.

Maybe this will jog your memory, think he is called Mr X
This silent figure, a hint of the original’s unfinished tyrant beneath his trenchcoat, pursues you throughout the ‘B’ scenario with relentless purpose. After completing one puzzle, he bursts through the wall inches from you, scattering bricks and mortar across the room. If you escape, he simply bursts back through the same wall, his huge frame blocking the narrow corridor between you and the door.

Another time, you reach the end of a metal walkway and glance at a security camera, only to see him following the same one-way path. You can knock him out, but it’s only temporary. It’s notable how much of the series since RE2 has borrowed from its replay innovations and the ‘B’ scenarios: RE3’s Nemesis is clearly an extension of Mr X, the ‘Fourth Survivor’ mode has inspired similar bonus modes in every subsequent sequel, and RE4’s Ashley dynamic is prefigured in the short sections where you guard or control Sherry.

top guy is william birkin, in his 2nd or 3rd form and he is the guy you encounter most in RE2 (injects himself with the virus after being shot by hunk)

jolli is talking about tyrant tho, who arrives in a capsule and wears a long trenchcoat and chases you in a few areas. he later transforms into super tyrant (which basically looks like the regular tyrant from RE1 but with 2 massive arms instead of 1)
