As a huge Rare fan I cannot wait for Sea of Thieves, coming for Xbox One and Win 10.

there is a lot riding on this given their last...what...10? games have been shit...

if this isn't awesome they may as well just give up.

I am not pesimistic as much as you. I watched the E3 footage they showed up and I believed in them. By the way, I don't want to big studios rule the gaming sector.

Oh please, Rare's 10 last games were not at all bad. Apart from forced Kinect Sports on XO they had some really good titles. I most enjoyed PDZ, Kameo, both Pinata's and Nuts & Bolts also was awesome!

The Esprit that Rare Replay emits is still very "Rare" - sure, a lot of the old talent is gone, but they aquired new talent, lots of money invested there.

Last rare game i genui ely enjoued was probably DKC on the snes. But i hate the collect-em-up platformers that followed on the n64, so i cant fairly say that they started sucking before the xbox and 360 stuff. Real mediocre stuff there imo.

But hey, if they make a good pirate game im all for it.

He probably doesn't like their FPS games or fighters either. Megido has good taste!

They had great NES releases too. RC Pro-Am was a riot.

RC Pro-Am was indeed hilarious fun, god I loved my NES... felt so special. It was my second console after Philips G7400

It's still the best console ever IMO. Amazing library.

My favorite was Castlevania. Although I loved Mario [until today], Simon Belmont just made the most impact on me. Whatta game. Sometimes I only played it through to listen to the end-credits music the whole afternoon... and those Zelda's - so cool. When I first uncovered that path on the water in Z2 or that Lonk-Shadow fight, so amazing ;)

I also loved the ending of Metroid, although that I only saw at a friend, [was turned off my Biomechanic look at that time, too young] - I later enjoyed it with R-Type on Master System though and books by H.R. Giger [much later] ;)

And finishing Kid Icarus was really hard for me... hahahaha

Sorry for going off-topic.

Oh yeah...no, golden eye is not very good, nor is perfect dark imo. Overhyped, crappy FPS with terrible controls. No amount of couch co-op can save the game from those controls, but then no amount of reason will ever penetrate all that nostalgia either. Don't even mention KI. Same problem there. Completely mediocre, and had nothing on the better games in the genre at the time. I'd much rather play Street Fighter or KoF any day over KI.

Rare made a bunch of great games on the NES. Love me some Wizards and Warriors, RC pro.am, Snake rattle n roll, Slalom and probably a few more. Though tbh they made some complete shite on the NES as well. Lots of fond memories of Who framed roger rabit, beetlejuice or Nightmare on elm street? Nah.

Goldeneye had that good complex level design that alot of linear fps today doesn't have. The controls suck though but as a kid that didn't bother me. :)

Anyone who is interested in Rare should read the lengthy Eurogamer article about their downfall after Nintendo banished them and Microsoft aquired them.

Grabbed by the ghoulies was the first game they made that i thought was irredeemable shit! They have since made a load of other games that range from mediocre to more irredeemable shit. i'm waiting for them to make something good again...

It was fantastic? I thought it was pretty bland tbh. Nothing memorable about it. Played it, forgot it, done. Not the worst game ever, but then again i can't really point at anything particularly memorable about it.

it had a really generic fairy main character? that's what i took away from it. oh...and much like PDZ it overused paralax mapping.

Rare was one of the best devs on Nintendo 64 and of that generation regardless of your personal bias

this i agree with, even if the games have aged horribly...and i'd even argue that carried on with PS2 via free radical and timesplitters/second sight (Again...not aged well due to the archaic controls)

but since MS got their hands on them they've produced nothing but turds.

not sure bias is needed for it to ring true. i mean, besides nintendo themselves...who else even made games on the N64? they're one of the best by default. lol

On the N64 i can agree, but as you say there is like 0 competition. For the whole generation, because that's what Tinks said? I don't know man, the PS1 had some pretty solid classics as well, and there were a good amount of sweet PC games out and about at that time too. Not to mention the Dream Cast if you want to count that in there.

for some reason i didn't read "and of that generation"...so yeah...that's clearly bullshit. lol
