It got an 8 from edge and they went as far as to say that the game is "in reach of greatness"

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=39237...
Edge has awarded Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Conviction 8/10 in its latest lead review - claiming that the title is 'in reach of greatness'.

The mag is particularly impressed with protagonist Sam Fisher's ability to turn environments into 'torture chambers' at the press of a button.

'[Even] the presence of a piano suddenly fills the room with ominous potential' it reports.

It adds: 'The environments, at their best, are playgrounds for Fisher's lethal abilities, giving him every opportunity to outflank and outwit opponents who otherwise outgun him.'

It calls one particular chase around the Lincoln Memorial Ground 'heart-pumping', and praises the new, less-stealthy style of play. 'As Splinter Cell goes from covert to overt, a new-found dynamism emerges,' Edge reports.

However, the mag finds flaws in the games 'short' single-player campaign - and says that too much of the title is played in new atmospheric monocrome.

'But when Conviction hits its stride, the environments unlock the player's tactical ambitions in a way that's truly empowering,' it adds.
Conviction is in reach of greatness. It's flaws stand out in the short singleplayer campaign, and it's tail end relies too much on the gunplay that the game otherwise relegates to a begrudging last resort. But when it hits it's stride, the enviroments unlock the player's tactical ambitions in a way that's truly empowering, launching you between shadow and light, discretion and aggression. In some ways it's sad to say goodbye to old, subtle Fisher, but as Splinter Cell goes from covert to overt, a new found dynamism emerges, happily driving players to return to it's vicious little sandbox battles, tempting them to obliterate enemies in ever slicker, quicker ways. And that's surely the hallmark of any true conviction: it bears repeating.

Short campaign? It's the first SC with short campaign then... Theprevious ones were always within 15-20 hours of playtime (+multiplayer stuff).

If it's a better quality experience, I'd gladly take shorter. I just look forward to all sorts of interesting situations in this one :D

Well, not right to say better, but as long as it's an all around quality experience, I won't mind if it's shorter.

Some GAF user impressions from somebody that got it early.
One thing I didn't mention yet is that Sam's animations are quite fluid and, not to be a broken record, but I can again see the influence of 2 iterations of Assassin's Creed here. It would be interesting to find out how much cross pollination was happening with the development.

Alright - now that I've had some time to see a few more environments, I can honestly say that I don't think people are going to be "wowed" by the graphics. That said, I think the visuals are still very acceptable and, as mentioned, art direction and keen attention to level detail are exceptional. The lighting is especially nice here and, really, Conviction is not an ugly game. It's just that at this point in this generation and quite recently, we've seen some very impressive stuff. In this light, Ubisoft's latest may seem, at times, a little behind the curve.

That out of the way, I can safely say that this is easily one of the most enjoyable Splinter Cell games I've ever played. The increased pacing and attention to speed and slick cover techniques have completely won me over. I do love the old games and their methodical pace. It's just that the retooled mechanics here make for a more engaging experience by comparison (at least, for me). Don't get me wrong, though, this still has that old Splinter Cell feel through and through. It's just taken to a different level and one that I'm thoroughly enjoying.

...back to it!

Yea, going to read it now :)

I'm very, very pleased with what I read. The concerns regarding sometimes seeing ridiculous things like you getting a mark and execute kill through a wall, I saw that in the demo and pretty much know what to do to avoid having such a crazy thing happen.

I don't mind the 5 hour thing, because I know that won't be true for me. Every game that people have told me is short this generation, I've taken at least twice, sometimes three times, as long to beat.

I'm with you on that Optimus, it takes me forever to finish a game compared to other people. But I have to say 5 hours is plainly unacceptable. WTF have they been doing exactly then? I HIGHLY doubt this game has been in non-stop development, it probably was cancelled at one point. And the more I see of it, the more the graphics start to disappoint me. We still have this horrible and unacceptable facial animations so common in pretty much all game these days. Some environments certainly look lacking, and at the end of the day, it's just not that impressive looking.

I guess like that guy at Gaf, I think it's acceptable, but damn is it pushing the limits. Now I feel bad for saying God of War 3 looks on this game's level, when it looks considerably better.

EDIT: That sounded like I won't buy it now. I like what I've seen don't get me wrong, but being honest with myself, I can't deny to be very disappointed at the lenght, and the somewhat unpolished look.

Hehe, I hope it's longer than what I'm expecting, but judging from a lot of impressions I've read, it varies from person to person and it may not be that big an issue for me. There are posts from individuals on the official forums, which you probably want to avoid, because there are dicks who have clearly downloaded the game illegally and are throwing out some monster spoilers in certain thread titles. Anyway, like I was saying, there are posts on the official forum from individuals who actually own a legitly purchased copy of the game and have put in 5 hours and are fairly confident they can't be anywhere near the end of the game, and then there are others that have put in well over 10 hours already and still aren't finished with the SP.

Anothing thing to consider is the fact that Hilary, the IGN reviewer, is on like his 3rd playthrough of the SP which is certainly adding to why he believes the game is a 5 hour run through.

Every game I've played, with the exception of major rpg titles, has always been shorter on the second or third or fourth playthroughs, because you're much more familiar with the entire game and its layout than when you first jumped into it. Took me forever to beat the first Metal Gear Solid on the PS1, but once I did beat it, I was speed running through that bad boy making zero errors like you wouldn't believe.

One of the things I was most happy to hear out of the reviewer was that he believes this to be the most replayable Splinter Cell title ever, and I can surely already agree on that point and all I've played is the demo. I can say with confidence that I've already invested well over 13 hours alone just playing that one demo that's available. That dude with the pony tail has been shot in the face so many times to my utter satisfaction, that it might not be healthy.

Based on that, I'd say there's a fairly good chance I'll be getting much more than just 5 hours worth of enjoyment out of the full campaign combined with co-op. I will play through the SP multiple times. Kinda pissed the video review spoiled, in my opinion, a really cool surprise in the game, but it won't hurt my enjoyment none.

I also love the game's cover system just as much as the reviewer seems to. I also agree on, it's obvious where the game is lacking polish -- from what I've seen anyway -- but at this point I've pretty much programmed myself to just accept it as is and try my best to enjoy what's there.

I did a similar thing for Halo 3: ODST. I've actually managed to get around my gripes about that game now, and will actually look to pick it up on the cheap

Gameinformer Review 9/10

http://www.vgarabia.com/2010/04/10/splinter-cell-c...
The magazine praised the streamlined controls, the beautiful environments of the game, the excellent co-op experiences, and the fluid animation of Sam Fisher’s moves, at the same time, they complained about the overuse of the black and white effect (The effect which shows the player if he is in stealth mode or not):

- Graphics:

The environments are beautifully rendered, and Sam’s animations are killer. Black and White effects are used to freely, resulting in a detachment from the world.

- Sound:

Sam’s gravelly tones are fueled by emotion and backed by a suprisingly score.

- Playability:

I never once had to fuss with the controls. The stealth mechanics are easy to embrace, and the gunplay offers razor-sharp precision.

- Entertainment:

A Satisfying conclusion to Sam Fisher’s tale coupled with one of gaming’s most rewarding co-op experiences.

- Replay Value:

Moderately High.

You may feel that way by watching videos but it very well could change when you've got the controller in your hand. I honestly barely notice it while I'm playing. It really works ideally with the speed that you go in and out of cover in this iteration.

If you are a big fan of CT, you'd really be missing out here. Since I posted earlier today and played some more, Conviction has actually started to close in on Chaos Theory territory for me. It's THAT good. A couple of the levels I've played so far are easily among the best environments I've seen in this series. There's some genius design here that just screams "replay me"!
Just making the wait harder. Won't be long till this baby is in my hand :D

I'm most excited about the number of people saying how extremely replayable the game feels. With the earlier games I'd just play certain levels and, god forbid I had to do something over again, it never really felt that I had many choices as to how I could go about things.

But then, I never beat any of the previous games, so maybe I just needed to progress further before I started seeing levels that offered me a greater variety of ways to approach a situation.

I plan on heading to my local best buy on the release date to pick this one up.

Love the gamepro review :D
Why Sam has stepped out of the shadows and is on full out attack makes complete sense in context with the story, so if you can accept it for what it is and not dwell on the fact that it isn't what you've come to expect in a Splinter Cell title, you'll no doubt agree that Conviction rivals Chaos Theory as the best title in the franchise's history.

Haven't played a SC game since the original on Xbox lol. This one looks pretty neat-o i gotta say, however I think this recent trend of singleplayer games lasting 5-6 hours is disrespectful to the gamer who gets to pay $10 more this generation for shorter games!!! Darn development costs... Hey devs set the bar for your singleplayer games at 8 hours atleast!
