I'm not sure if I'm going to travel by night or go into any dark places in this game.

The monsters look terrifying.

Yeah, Oblivion never really captured that fear of travelling at night that Morrowind had. Fallout and New Vegas sort of had it, but this could potentially bring it right back.

I think Skyrim is going to be as much an ode to Morrowind as it will be to any of Bethesda's other games. Unsurprising really, seeing as it's generally considered to be the best in the series - even though I personally preferred Oblivion.

I preferred Oblivion as well. Why is Morrowind supposed to be the better game?

I think its down to the variety of things to do and the larger amount of weapons.

I still liked Oblivion more though; the combat was bearable

Not too sure really. A lot of people seem to have the opinion that Oblivion's landscape lacked a bit of variety and identity which, subsequently, they felt Morrowing had in abundance. I sort of get the part about a lack of variety - although it's never bothered me whilst playing it - but I found it hard to get into Morrowind and truly invest in it, which is something I had absolutely no trouble doing with Oblivion.

The combat was pretty horrible in Morrowind as well.

Another thing I'm hoping for is more Lovecraft-influenced monsters, references, and names. For example, the name Dagon is borrowed from one of his stories, the mission "Shadow over Hackdirt" is a reference to "Shadow over Innsmouth", when the character wakes up in a shady hotel and is attacked by the towns inhabitants. I mean, Imagine some thing like this:

Maybe not as large or seaborne but something creepy like that could make the game more dark and unique.

Morrowind felt like it was a different world, so many distinct and alien looking environments. Oblivion just felt like a pretty bland Medieval fantasy setting for the largest part.

That ends up being pretty subjective though. Morrowind felt bland to me while Oblivion was more interesting even though it was largely unoriginal.

I didn't end up finishing either games to be honest, so I thought maybe there were some epic quests/moments in Morrowind that I hadn't encountered or something....and that's what makes it generally more well-liked than Oblivion. From what I remember though, there was a good deal more tedium in Morrowind than in Oblivion.

I think finding the right person or cave or what ever was more fun in Morrowind. Asking directions etc. What did Oblivion have? Hey you fucking noob come here compass.

exactly, the closest oblivion ever got to matching the visual flair and diversity of morrowind was with shivering isles. the vanilla game was a bit lacking in personality in comparrison. the story, customisation, and general depth was much greater in morrowind too.

unlike some tho, i actually appreciate some of the things oblivion introduced, such as quest/NPC markers and fast travelling. the combat itself was much better too (but still shit) voice acting on all characters made it more accessible too.

if skyrim is a combination of both games, then it should be great.

I think that's sorta fair, but let's not forget that it will be just as influenced by Fallout 3. That game introduced a lot of things which will greatly benefit Skyrim if adapted to fit the game's style and direction - not to mention that they will have learned a lot from it as well.

yeah. it's cool they've finally made a woman look like a woman, but if she moves like a robtot it's going to mean F-all. it'd be nice to see more NPC daily routine stuff too. it was kinda in oblivion and fallout in the sense they where awake and in a building by day, and asleep in a tent by night. but that's about as far as it went. would be nice to see a barman actually talk to people. ask what they want and serve it. cos the game so far they've all had a tendency to just walk around rendomly "saying" they're busy, but obviously not being. stuff like that is going to make skyrim a better game with a much better atmosphere...less so the addition of shadows (although that's nice too)
