The difference in detail comparing this to oblivion is near on remarkable, did they get new artists? or is it just down to better tools and engine?

Morso the former imo.

Unless i'm living in a world where engine dictates an artists ability to model a face that actually looks like a woman?

Obviously not, but the superior tech is clear for all to see.

I'm not so sure, looks more like they found artists that are worth a damn. Tech is looking only marginally better to me. But the art help a ton, makes it look far more appealing.

The tech is far superior - that isn't even debatable. But the work the artists have put in this time around is fantastic.

Far superior? Eh.. not seeing it. I'm seeing beautiful textures (and slightly more detailed geometry perhaps) and much better art. There's absolutely nothing about Skyrim that looks technically impressive to me. In fact, my first thought in seeing screen shots was how unbelievably well it's going to run on my PC. There's nothing here to make it break a sweat.

I think the way they're streaming the world in is leaps bound how Oblivion handled it, and the lighting is a lot more impressive - Oblivion's lighting was very flat. Plus the proposed new AI which is going on behind the scenes, the way animals are now part of a food chain and will adapt accordingly, the dynamic script that the dragons have, the way the weather is dynamically generated rather than scripted, the vastly improved animation system, and the manner in which they've rendered foliage so that they have their own dynamic movement as well. All tech, all much better.

It isn't groundbreaking, but it's far more impressive than what Oblivion and Falout 3 offered in my opinion. But there's no doubt that the grittier, more grounded artistic direction is what makes it all stand out.

Yeah, i have to agree with Grift. While it does look like an improvement over Oblivion it's still not looking stellar from a technical point. What makes this look good is the art. The other way around would be the Unlimited Detail demo videos i guess, where the art is complete shit but it looks cool because the prospect of the geometry blows you away.

great art, massive world, unscripted dragons and animal foodchain > BF-esque graphics/engine.

Does anyone know whether or not stealth/sneak detection works on line of sight rather than radial proximity?

Judging by the gameplay with the bow and arrow in the dungeon, It looks like its LOS based

Hope so, nothing more annoying than being detected through the ceiling by enemies whilst sneaking.

if its line of sight and sound, i might highly take up doing a stealth char.. tried on oblivion, was shit.

Yeah, stealt in vanilla oblivion is complete and utter shit. Enemes spot you trhough walls, they never forget you once discovered and that one single sneak attack you can pull per dungeon does tiny damage :P

Chameleon potions and spells are your friend =)

Stacking chameleon up to 100% gives you all the benefits of invisibility without the appearing after actions like using or attacking =)

When your alchemy is lvl 100 and you can make them just from blood grass it does kinda feel like playing with the AI turned off though.

Yeah, or you could do what i did after i realized how goddamn broken te sneaking was and save just before picking up a sigil stone, then picking it up over and over again untill you get the chameleon effect. After a few towers you'll have a set or armor that gives you 100% chameleon and breeze though the game. It's not much fun but being a stealth based character never was in Oblivion anyway :P

Stealth only worked in oblivion when you combined it with archery, otherwise it was utterly boring. Will probably do the same in skyrim. Create myself my very own elfy garrett from the thief series.

Didn't work with archery either. You only ever got in one sneak attack and then the entire dungeon was allerted to your pressence. Sneaking was an epic fail in Oblivion no matter what other skills you coupled it with, aside from Chameleon which in essence nullifies the need to sneak anyway.

100% Chameleon + 2 Hander + Crouch button = Game winning equation. 6x sneak damage FTW!

Yeah, it was fine early in the game, it was first after leveling up a few times it turned in to shit for me. My arrows were like pesky mosquito bites to the angry minotaur lord charging towards me. The 6x sneak attack didn't help much. I didn't particularly feel like grinding stats either though, so i didn't make sure to get the +5 bonuses every time. I just played, and it was ugly :P
