I regret putting some of my first perks into destruction magic. My character now is more of an Assassin, dagger and long sword to take advantage of blades. Gonna make him a stealthy backstabbing motherfucker. Arching is also very cool, and very satisfying with the backstabbing bonus (can I raise it beyond 3x?) Also got quite some perks in smithing since it's so easy to rank up and very useful to be able to improve armor/weapons. And just now getting into enchanting to ward myself against magic.

While specialization is key to a powerful character I don't think I'm spreading myself too thin. I already kill dragons with 3-4 powerful attacks.

Next time I'll make a mage/thief evil character robbing everyone blind.

Can probably expect a potion or something in future DLC to reset your perks.

Can we though? I don't know if there's any indication of this in their other games.

So out of curiosity.. are all of those combat skills out in front? Are you using any non-combat skills? Did you perk into any of them yet?

I think smithing/enchanting/alchemy is the power combo for pretty much any type of non-magical combat character.

Not into alchemy that much, it's just a pain in the ass to find the ingredients and I don't like the idea of scrolling through a huge inventory of potions in the middle of a fight (I'll to it for healing and stamina occasionally). Breaks up the pace of combat.

When I think about it, my perks in lock picking don't seem to be that useful after all. I unlock the tougher ones with just 5-10 tries.

I have yet to encounter a lock I can't pick. It's definitely one of the less useful/important perk trees.

Re:Alchemy

Ingredients are everywhere.. it's not like you have to look for them. I do find it more difficult to train than smithing. Thankfully there are skill trainers :D Alchemy and enchanting almost go as hand-in-hand as alchemy and archery. You can get your resistances up with enchanting, or your damage, but you can't really buff every single worthy stat that way. Alchemy lets you use poison, resistance, hp and stamina pots while in combat--but it also lets you buff enchanting! In turn, you can buff alchemy! In turn you can make a better potion for buffing enchantments! This is the only way to get the best equipment in the game.

Granted.. there's no need to have the best equipment. By all means, roll with what you want! I want good gear. By the time I get to the end game my archery is going to do so much damn damage that any points spent on magic would be a total waste.

Mind your level scaling too. There's an opportunity for Dragons to catch back up with you. I sorta doubt you really need to min-max in this game to make it easy.

I am really enjoying my mage, I love using powers more than anything in games anyways so I feel right at home with this build.

Some things I love about the mage...

- Summoning a atronach to fight along with you, very powerful (yet Novice level) companion. I always summon it before entering a fight. And summoning strong dead corpses.
- Hadoken! I love charging up lightning bolts or fireballs and shoot them like Ryu/Ken from Street Fighter lol. I hope Master levels can be charged up to Akuma level :D I saw one master necromancer do that, loved it!
- I also really like the combining dual wield elements in each hand. For example fire + lightning and start unleashing them both, pure badassery! Though I wish you could merge two elements and then charge them into one and then release, that would be fantastic!
- Its a thinking mans game sometimes. Sometimes you have to use stradegy to make the best out of your magic for ultimate use, like Illusions, use Fear on the most fearsome bastard and them start doing damage.

Things I dont like...

- Staffs are good, but it needs to be constantly charged when you use too much. Though I buy those big gems, seems to take less power. I wish you could melee with them as well.
- Not to be able to merge two elements into one, unless there is one and I dont know it yet.

I cant find much cons as pros, I am loving the mage build alot.
I also did what ManThatYouFear told me, added Impact perk to Destruction, charging up a fireball with two hands and attacking two a enemy will stun them for a second, can't image more powerful powers.

I took out giants and mamoths, took some time, but I loved killing them off, those bastards just gives me headache! I hope I find Frost Trolls because they are my nemesis in this game lol

Right now I am in Novice and Apprentice levels in level 9 so I cant dish out much damage on my spells but soon.

PS. Lydia is one strong companion! I have seen her fly to orbit from a giants ground Hulk smash and a minute or so later, she is back in the fight hahaha. Some places in the environment Giants wont come at you, so I use those spots to kill them, for now.

Have you encountered any Master-level locks yet? They're a bitch to lockpick if you haven't put any perks in that skill tree - have to save just before and keep reloading until I get the job done!

I did quite find some. Sure needs few tries and loose some lockpicks, but doesnt make me want spend any perks in the lockpick tree. I have managed open everything ive encountered so far.

Lockpicks are easy to come by too, at least i never ran out of any. Anyway in all stuff ive opened, didn't find many interesting loot for my mage.

Yeah just buy a ton of lockpicks (cheap and easy to get), it's way better than wasting points on lockpicking perks.
