It is a first today, as Gamersyde is giving a Kinect game the First 10 Minutes treatment. We will start with Crossboad 7, a Mario Kart-like published by Konami that is obviously aimed at a young audience. We are showing you the tutorial of the game and the first slalom race you will get to try. We also added a video showing the basic set up for Kinect as it is something we never really took time to demonstrate since Microsoft's new gadget was released.
Quite honestly, I can't say I had great fun playing Crossboard 7, mainly because there were quite a few issues with movement recognition when I tried the game yesterday. It does not show in the video because I chose to edit it so it would only focus on the good stuff but I would be lying if I said everything went well. My avatar would not move at the start of the race even though I was in the right position for example. Sometimes also, it was very difficult to control the character because he would turn too much (or the contrary), or because stomping to use an item just would not work (my poor neighbors downstairs must have gone haywire...). Quite annoying too, the game would not recognize me when I stepped outside of the room and came back in front of the camera, forcing me to go through the menu to reconnect my profile. Everything was set up correctly beforehand though, so I either was really unlucky or the game is actually quite capricious.
That being said, I must admit that, when things work correctly, it can be pretty fun to play for some people. However, because of all the problems I mentioned, I found that the game was not really easy enough for kids. Some early tracks make it difficult not to bump into each side of the track, your opponents are quite aggressive and don't hesitate to push you away making you lose your balance or miss a slalom gate, etc. For all these reasons, you must really be patient to avoid frustration and I am not sure everyone will be able to with this type of title. I would then strongly advise you give the game a try before you buy it, because however appealing the technology may be, the first thing that comes to mind when playing Crossboard 7 is that there is nothing as precise as a standard controller. There is some potentiel in the genre though, but a lot of work still needs to be done.
