I think it is looking better, I mean the clouds look really good and the same with pics 4 and 5, but I feel there is still more to improve in graphics.

Is this not next-gen enough? I mean it's cartoony looking. Does it look like an Xbox game? I'm curious because people accused PDZ and DOA 4 to not be next-gen enough. :)

The game will be fast enough to not notice the piss poor texturing, hopefully.

Well, I think everyone agrees that they shouldn't change the character model of Sonic too much. You really can't add any "realistic" detail to him without sooner or later ending up with one creepy looking thing. The fact that his eyes are actually like.. one.. big ball with two pupils on works because he's so cartoony, but if you mess with that the whole design falls apart.

What they could do to make him "next geny" is animate him awesomely and remove any trace of like.. polygons in him. There are still some straight lines on him, and if you look at something like the cars in PGR3 you know that doesn't have to be the case.

However, they might be creating an engine that could work on the Revolution aswell, or it could just be because this is STILL the trailer for the game shown at E3 in may, and stuff has already improved. I guess we'll know in june.

Edit: The shading on his eyes needs some tweaking too. Make it less gray in tone and put a little more "life" into them. PDZ does the cartoony eyes really well.

any more polygons in him and it'll be cg pre-render-caliber ;) seriously, what did you expect from these new consoles? it's simply a more powerful xbox, and I have no problem with that. it's enough for me that this game will be bigger, in a higher resolution w/ hopefully no jaggies, more enemies/interaction and effects, etc..

only thing i agree they could improve on is texture quality(wouldn't call it piss poor anyway), but other than that, i'm more worried about gameplay. it's obviously not going to be as ground breaking as when sonic adventure first debuted, but i hope to play it and like it as much! i didn't like the last sonic games like sonic heroes....

" any more polygons in him and it'll be cg pre-render-caliber"

Um, yes? I fully expect 360 games to look like the CG cutscenes in heroes and shadow, that's not too much to ask at all.

http://img2.kult-mag.com/photos/00/00/57/23/ME0000... <- CG but certainly achievable on the 360.

I sort of don't expect the first batch of titles to look like that, especially from third parties, but it's easily possible to do it.

That said, my "yay" sound (with a bunch of a's) should testify that I'm a big fan of Sonic and Sega in general (although they've been pretty iffy lately with a few exceptions) so I'm still gonna play this and go all kinds of "wooo!".

yeah, 2d gameplay would be nice....going to fire up the old megadrive now >=]
hey simun, that pic of shadow isn't completely possible. texture quality is TOO HIGH and his smooth hands indicate a very high polygon count. not possible in a fast game with many characters on screen in a big detailed world.

It wouldn't look nearly as "polygony" is they had just used some normal mapping on the characters. In case you don't know, normal mapping is when you model a game asset (a character, building, vehicle, etc) in super high detail (we're talking maybe 1 mil polys or more for a character) then generate a special texture map from that model, and then apply that to a low detail model (to be used in-game, let's say 10,000 polys for a next gen character). What you get is a low detail model, that is fast and efficiant, but appears to have FAR more detail on its surface than it really does. This is especially important with new per-pixel, dynamic lighting engines, so the characters reflect light realisticly and appear smooth.

Many current-gen games have used this technology, such as Riddick, Doom 3, Half-Life 2, etc, so I don't see why they wouldn't bother with it on this next-gen Sonic.

And I agree with the textures looking painfully low-rez. But as long as it's fast and frenetic, I don't think it will matter a whole lot. I'd like to see some gameplay involving physics objects though, like smashing through walls, knocking over some large object to trigger other objects, major destruction of the environment, etc. I think the Sonic franchise really needs some inovative gameplay again.

This game is not visually impressive in any way, IMO. I understand it needs to stay cartoony, but look at his fingers. I don't care if it's "fast" or not, I want to at least see some ROUND fingers on such an already simple model.

question: how do you think a little fur shading would look? would it ruin Sonic's style? I'm not sure.
