When you engage a dogfight it seems to be pretty much on rails, though it it also seems like the dog fight mode is completely optional and if you want to you can play it like any other AC.

Only thing I did not like was how the enemy planes gather in front of you when you switch to special weapons, that looked way to staged.

I think this is a tutorial level, that would explain some of the on rails looking parts like the building thats crumbling and the crane collapsing. But man as an ace combat I'm extremely excited.

It's no tutorial-only part. It's a new QUICK TIME EVENT dubbed Dogfight Mode, where the game goes on a "cutscene" of a dogfight and you have to shoot (or for the better lack of words... press a button) only when the reticule is green, and not red. Maybe optional, but it will get old fast.

These plane games never interest me because they never capture the weight of firing a missile. I mean what is the use of shooting down enemies with your chain gun if you have 200 missiles.

I understand that this is not a simulator, but they could at least cut down the number of missiles so you did rely on your chain gun a lot more or at least have some decision making where missile count carries over in the next few missions so you could save them up.

Completely agree. That is the main reason the only flight games I play are WWII flight sims. The gritty realism of dynamically tearing planes apart with machine guns is just so much more appealing than waiting until I see a red triangle, and then pushing a button and letting technology track down and kill my target via a homing missile. (realistically, current jet fighters seldom if ever actually use their cannons, unless it is a last resort).

Everything usually just seems so scripted as well. Hit target with exactly 2 missiles everytime to see the same damn explosion. This looks a little better, but the trade off is the on rails & QTE sections, which typically kill games for me.

Don't get me wrong, I love the advanced technology of fighter jets, they are just too automatic to translate into exciting, deep gameplay. I used to love Ace Combat back in the early PS2 days, but the gameplay just feels so dated now. This game looks really nice to watch, but playing might be a different story....

The game still features the usual novice and advanced controls and using the advanced controls means that no part of the game is reduced to a cutscene and you still have almost complete control (minus barrel rolls) in dogfight mode. Pressing a button to perform a kulbit turn rubs me the wrong way a bit but that is only when an enemy is on your tail, hardly a major quick time event intrusion.

Clearly, this entire clip is played using novice controls but still, it's misinformation to describe the dogfight mode as a "cutscene".
