GSY Tech PC PS4 Xbox One

After our Xbox One footage of Call of Duty: Black Ops III, here is a couple of GSY Tech videos of the PS4 version. As you'll see, the game manages to hold 60 fps most of the time - but not always - and every ingame cutscene surprisingly drops down at 30, even when breaching a door for a few seconds. Content-wise, Treyarch did a very good job, with a 4-player-co-op campaign, many types of multiplayer modes to choose from and of course the now famous Zombie mode. Beware that the first time you'll launch the game, it will take ages to install the multiplayer and campaign and you won't be able to start the story mode for at least an hour.

There is split screen yes, but it might just be 2 players. I'm not sure.

I'm enjoying this CoD surprisingly. But as mentioned, you need some patient before you can actually start playing MP and SP because of long installation of both components. Strange it doesn't show that when you first insert the disc. You can only see that after booting the game up.
The levels aren't that bland as mentioned before. The game just doesn't start with a big bang like previous CoD games.
I don't know if there was a resolution analysis, because sometimes it looks more blurry in places. Like a dynamic resolution. I'm not sure about this.
Mp is fun, but as always: stupid lag issues getting you killed before you even had the chance to pull the trigger. Evidence is in the kill replays. On the other hand, I suck on consoles anyhow.

So how does the dynamic scaler work in Black Ops 3? Both Xbox One and PS4 versions render in native 1080p during cut-scenes, and for the most part full HD quality is retained throughout the duration of these sequences. Anti-aliasing is handled via the use of filmic SMAA, successfully providing good coverage across geometry edges, though some texture blurring is apparent. PS4 doesn't appear to drop below 1080p at all in these scenes, whereas the Xbox One version seems to transition down to 1728x1080 just before gameplay kicks off - and that's where the scaler really gets to work.

Once the player gains control we see shifts in native resolution across both platforms, according to engine load. PS4 ranges between 1360x1080 to 1920x1080, although much of the time the engine manages to hit the desired native 1080p resolution for extended periods. During the opening firefight in the Provocation mission we see PS4 kick off at 1360x1080p before ramping back up to full 1080p a few moments later - the switch is often barely visible due to softening effect of the AA solution, although some blur across distant details is apparent.

Xbox One is a different story, targeting a baseline 1600x900 for gameplay, but after trawling through our captures it appears that the engine rarely - if ever - achieves this. Instead we're looking at a sustained 1280x900 resolution, even in less stressful gameplay scenes, with horizontal metrics dropping down to 1200x900 in more challenging scenarios - and the results are not impressive. Due to the heavy upscale, the Xbox One release possesses a consistent blurry appearance when the action really kicks in: fine details are frequently smudged over, while geometry edges appear rough and fuzzy. It's a substantial downgrade over last year's Advanced Warfare, where Sledgehammer stayed locked at a 1360x1080 resolution during the more demanding scenes.

I do laugh to myself when i see PS4 quoted in different topics as "superior hardware". It really isnt.. just doesnt justify me keeping hold of mine when the differences are this small between the consoles. Im really wanting to dip into pc gaming after seeing so much talk on here about it... an X1/PC set-up ticks all the right boxes for me.. i cant wait to be able to sit down with some of these new releases and play them on a decent spec rig :)

it's superior to the xbox. factually and consistently so, just like 360 was to PS3 and xbox was to PS2. but a PC is definitely the way to go if you want 60fps in every game all the time.

You can cringe all you want but it is. Now it's not the developers' fault if Microsoft and Sony thought such hardware would be enough to satisfy hardcore gamers.

I know its not the devs fault they are working with two low specced consoles... its why its good to see they are able to release titles on pc without any tech limitations..

Looks like we'll have another PC gamer posting up in here very soon :D

As for CoD, even on PC MP it looks odd, very hazy and lack of textures in certain areas. I know this one actually ramps the graphically settings and you need a fairly decent rig to run it right but there's something a miss when playing.

*edit

Also, does anyone feel a bit funny when playing? I'm not sure if it's frames or this weird slight head bob in game that kinda puts me off when playing.

It will be the head bobbing m8.. can affect some and not others.. had a friend a while back that suffered bad with it to the point of throwing up.. likened it to motion sickness.. he actually took travel tablets before a long fps session and it helped!
As for me becoming a pc gamer.. yeah im getting quite excited.. been browsing amazon just pricing up stuff.. will need to start asking a few questions on here in a few weeks ;)

There will always be tech limitations. Ironically, probably more so on the PC as devs have a harder time optimising on there to satisfy a broader spectrum of hardware. Anyway, PC's and consoles are going through a bit of a transitional period of diminished returns at the moment, so they both have that in common at least. I can't remember the last title on PC that you looked at and said "Yep, that would be absolutely impossible on a console", or at least a title that broke new ground visually. Crysis, perhaps?

I'd try and resist the temptation to build a rig just yet. Wait for the first wave of VR, and then make your decisions based around it and the one you go for. I'm not upgrading my rig yet for the same reason. Not long to go now.

Don't think I've ever experienced that on other cods tbh, if there's an option to turn it off in any other game it's the first thing I do ;)

Cheers m8 ;)

I think Redwood looks awesome, best looking MP map in BO3.

But yeah i do notice some dynamic resolution change, mostly during the early pre-match, but on ps4 its barely there.

So my eyes didn't deceive me
But this game is not stunning in the visual departement, so no idea why even the PS4 can't handle 1080p. On the other hand, the engine at it's core is so old, that further optimisation isn't possible without re-writing everything or just use another engine. But I think Activision couldn't care less.
Actually if you got look at Digital foundry it does stay close to 1080p most of the time. It does scale when it needs it.

I may be strong but AW was better performing and looked just as good if not better. Console specs do not change but the gfx, performance can always be improved. It needs time but sadly these days they just need to get the game out ASAP.
