Trailer Xbox 360

As you may remember I thoroughly enjoyed playing Child of Eden at last year's Tokyo Games Show, and I surprisingly (for me) enjoyed it even more when playing it with Kinect. So as a reminder, here is a new trailer of the game, showing this exact functionality again. It's also a good way to see that the graphics got a bit better, and to see some new gameplay sequences.

If there was a game that should be a poster child for psychedelic drugs, it would be this one.

Must play!

So glad this game's release date has been delayed until after E3. I've been on the fence about Kinect from the beginning, and at E3, either Microsoft convinces gamers that Kinect is the real deal and worth getting by finally showing off a slew of the promised hardcore games, or just another fad for the casuals, and worth ignoring. Either way, knowing in advance to actually getting Child of Eden, is going to determine whether I purchase a Kinect with Child of Eden or not.

Breath-taking, but I'll certainly not be playing it on the jittery lag-fest that is Kinect. Fortunately it also works with a regular control pad.

Sorry to disappoint you but there'll probably be just as LITTLE lag with the joypad as there is with Kinect. Especially now that Microsoft have got the processing lag down to 2ms which means Kinect games in the future shouldn't have more than 102ms lag (100ms is the minimum lag you can have in a 30fps game, even with a joypad, and Kinect's IR sensor and VGA RGB cam run at 30fps) unless there's extra lag in the game itself just the same as any other game played with a joypad. There are 4 reasons you might be noticing lag in Kinect games (well, 5 if the game itself was just programmed badly and has lag anyway):

1. You (or whoever the Kinect belongs to) have an HDTV but don't have "Game Mode" switched on. (If it's got the feature, if not then you're screwed and have been playing laggy games even with a joypad.)

2. You (or your friend) have the Xbox 360's video output running through a separate A/V receiver rather than plugging it directly into the TV. (Once again, your joypad games are laggy too if that's the case.)

3. You have something interfering with Kinect. (A mirror near it perhaps or a light shining directly at it.)

4. Kinect doesn't have 0ms lag so therefore if you pay attention you can notice slight lag because you'll be watching both your body (well, arm or whatever) and the screen at the same time and because there isn't 0ms lag it's not exactly the same as a mirror. You wouldn't notice this with a joypad however because you wouldn't be watching both your button press and the action on screen at the same time.

Here's a list of a number of games and their lag times if you don't believe me:

Burnout Paradise 67ms
BioShock (frame-locked) 133ms
BioShock (unlocked) as low as 67ms
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare 67ms-84ms
Call of Duty: World at War 67ms-100ms
Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood 100ms
Forza Motorsport 2 67ms
Geometry Wars 2 67ms
Guitar Hero: Aerosmith 67ms
Grand Theft Auto IV 133ms-200ms
Halo 3 100ms-150ms
Left 4 Dead 100ms-133ms
LEGO Batman 133ms
Mirror's Edge 133ms
Street Fighter IV 67ms
Soul Calibur IV 67ms-84ms
Unreal Tournament 3 100ms-133ms
X-Men Origins: Wolverine 133ms

In comparison Kinect Adventures and Kinect Sports are both about 150ms give or take a millisecond or 2.
