Developer Diary Xbox One

This behind-the-scenes video of Ryse: Sons of Rome shows how Crytek managed the performance capture.

impressive stuff..actually has me looking a bit more forward to the game as theres a chance of a decent well acted story. But we already know the faces look top quality, they need to release some gameplay footage to match now

The gameplay shown so far has looked so bad they need to focus on getting people to believe it will actually be fun to play not just cool tech.

You know That very scene used for the advertising shot; Marius sounds an awful lot like Brian cox. "they have no honor. These vermin dare to stand against the might of Rome. They deserve to suffer our retribution!"

.......funny, almost thought it was him for a tiny moment.

Anyways, very good stuff. Probably one of the best looking title out there so far. best facial animations.

Or you could push "start" and disable QTEs. Clearly this is nothing like Two Souls Where 3 hrs later you finally do something.

This is the games problem atm. We know it looks half decent. Now they need some sort of evidence the game is actually good...as for crytech and stories...does anyone actually have faith in them in that regard?

Heavy Rain and Beyond are 2 very different games/experiences for people who may be interested in that kind of gameplay.
Ryse is a game that is out in 3 months, launching on a console that is very expensive, made by a team that make very generic FPS games. It doesn't help that nobody has a clue what the game is going to play like. Why even compare it to something like Beyond that we all know what it is and the people who want to buy it are going to buy it?
And to others, there is nothing impressive about capturing faces with those little dots. How about doing all the genius work on the faces ALL by yourself like Naughty Dog have been since Crash Bandicoot?

Those mo-caped facial animations are ruined by the "dead eyes" syndrome anyway. They still look like lifeless mannequins trying to mimic humans...

I guess they should just stop trying then. I mean, why even bother do something if you can't do it perfectly? /sarcasm

How about they bother perfecting realistic looking eyes to sublimate their work on the faces ? But hey, if people are fine with awkward looking characters then enjoy the next 10 years of those.

What makes you think they haven't been trying? I still haven't seen a CG movie with tens of millions of dollars behind it that has perfected realistic looking eyes, so why would I expect a game developer to devote that much time and resources to perfecting them? Your expectations are less realistic than these "dead eyes."
But hey, if people are fine with awkward looking characters then enjoy the next 10 years of those.
I don't find them all that akward looking, so yes, I am fine with them. My enjoyment of a game has never once been hindered because the eyes weren't real enough.

Then I guess beyond two souls shouldn't be collecting any merits on tech either since quantum theory didn't create Ellen Page and Willem Dafoe.

Naughtydog actually uses references for their human characters.
If you want to use something that's character's are 100% created by imagination i would say the metal gear solid series.

The content we've seen is "pre-Alpha", and their eyes look fine.

Maybe a little better tracking is all they need.

People just need to stop complaining for the sake of it.

Metal gear solid (most recent and impressive) still used performance capture, naughty dog do it as pixar do it, hand animated. No mo-cap. No dots on the face. All hand animated.

It's quantic dream who make heavy rain and beyond two souls, not quantum theory.

And no, the eyes look dead and lifeless. Less of an issue if you can stylistically make them expressive (see naughty dog) not very good when you're aiming for lifelike. Heavy rain had the same problem.

looks really impressive focusing a systems on character models. Looking at the in-game Infamous footage though.. Hmm.. What do you guys think of the graphically prowess of both games?

It's funny that people can be so picky about fucking "eyeball realism" when the game looks so damn good yet the gameplay looks so awful. Any next gen game you can point to has just as many if not more graphical flaws, so this all seems a bit silly.

It's more that the lacklustre eyes are making the facial animation a bit...redundant. They're trying to capture lifelike faces, but their stumbling on the first hurdle...eyes. Which just kills any emotional impact or believability. It's like the LA noire faces being a jarring contrast to the wooden body capture. If mediocrity as a whole is going to be the end result, it all seems a bit pointless.

see the things is the "dead eyes" stand out more because everything else is top of its class, and as they're obviously redesigning the gameplay somewhat they've put out a promotional video focused on performance capture...inviting nit picking on the graphics as the graphics are it's biggest selling point so far.

Also the eyes do actually look better in the new footage shown.. but they definatly stood out as a visual weak point in the E3 demo.

The eyes are whatever. The facial animations rule. Same with the motion capture of the body movements

They still use people for references on motion.

And they do too use real people for references.

So quit acting like Naughty Dog is 100% original.

Whatever, they're cheaters too on character originality (if you look at that way.) And that goes double on the "Dark sorcerer demo".

I never said ND had 100% original characters. I said they animate their faces by hand. Not using motion capture, and their characters are better off for it. They're stylised, no-one is ever going to think they're aiming for photorealism, but it alows them to stay well clear of uncanny vally, something that is a serious immersion breaker, in both games and movies. And going back to the eyes, i've never felt a character in last of us had dead, lifeless eyes. And yet this, and heavy rain, and probably beyond, games that flaunt a ton of mo cap tech, cant seems to get it right.

Hand animation is a craft and an art, and it will always be more impressive then mo cap to me. And so far, it's achieving substantially better results too. Kind of ironic.
