Video Xbox 360

The Halo 3 engine is certainly starting to show its age (that's my opinion at least), and that may explain why people don't seem to be too excited about Halo 3 ODST on the showfloor. Still, it's Halo, so there is no way in hell Snoopers wouldn't go and do a video!

I'm not sure what to make of this, it just seems a re-skin of halo 3, with hardly any gameplay changes.

i dunno who was playing this but they need to stop the constant bunny hopping - you can tell they're the type of people who would be really annoying to play against online..the type of people that would start comment posts with the word "first"!

I was initially excited about this. But the more I learned about it the more I lost interest. And I've sunk a lot of time into all Halos that came out and I bought all their map packs. Expecting 60 bucks on something that should have been just an expansion just sounds like a huge rip-off.

It is very meh, and im glad the showfloor has been ignoring it (if thats the case), perhaps it will wake bungie up to the fact that the engine is very dated, sure its got great lighting, but in every other way it is behind the times. There seems to be next to no post processing effects in there, world geometry is very basic and the gameplay mechanics are very much standard faire.

Is it really 60 dollars? Jesus that's a new level of piss taking if true.

The worst part about this game is that last year Bungie stated that because this would be fairly light on content with a shorter campaign mode it would be priced cheaper than the regular $60. Now it's coming out at the $60 price point and they're backpeddling trying to justify it. Just sad.

where did you hear about the pricing? nothings been announced on price yet. Theres no way in hell they can get away with charging full price for a 4hour game and recycled halo3 multiplayer maps - then again this is halo so it will sell well no matter what.

What was really disheartening is that it seems MS are planning to milk the halo universe with yearly expansion packs. I'd much rather them invest in a high production value Halo 4 with a new engine that could give killzone 2 a run for its money

It still blows my mind that Microsoft didn't give Bungie the money and motivation to make sure Halo 3 looked outstanding. Now they have all this time and they just use the same old engine with little to no polish?!!!

I used to think Bungie was smart for getting away from Microsoft. Now i'm thinking Microsoft was smart for letting go of Bungie. Unless the Reach Halo game turns out looking really good and having something new and exciting, I'm giving up hope on Bungie being able to keep up with other devs.

I'm more excited for the story than this survival mode, but I hope there are more weapons specific to the ODST than just silenced versions of known weapons. What about man-cover shields? Gadgets that help the ODST fight against the Covenant? I need to read more of the books.

I'm not sure why people are complaining about the gameplay/engine. It is only an expansion.. Even if it's a full priced stand alone expansion. Personally, I'm happy to see new single player content, rather than the constant focus on multiplayer.

And it should be great seeing the Halo universe from another perspective.. Jackals apparantly look a lot bigger and more dangerous :)

I don't know why everybody is just talking about engines or graphics. The overall graphics may be not outstanding, but very solid with awesome lighting effects. The whole scene would look much better if they would use different textures for most assets. But i guess the engine doesn't allow texture streaming. At least the weapon textures are much better than in HALO 3. But i think the lighting really outweights the other visual flaws and makes this a worthy 2009 game.

The halo engine focuses more on textures and lighting than polygon count or AA. It's not that pretty at first sight but it grows on you after a while. I personally find it pretty cool to be able to walk up to any generic object and just zoom in 10x and still see new textures pop up. You don't see that in other games. Same goes for the sky, it's not even a texture if I'm correct, it's generated in realtime so you can zoom in indefinitely without ever seeing any compression artifacts.
Yes yes I hear you, "what's the point", I guess it all boils down to a matter of taste. I can't speak for Bungie or why they choose to go in this direction, but I'm glad there is diversity in this virtual graphic race.

As for ODST. I'm looking forward to this more than any other Halo game. Why? It looks like the singleplayer campaign finally will make up for that long lost Metropolitan stage we saw in the 2003 E3 trailer. When that levels was cut from Halo 2, for me it was the biggest disappointment ever. So I'm glad they brought the whole idea back and put it into a stand alone expansion, completely free from the master chief arc.

The price I agree on, $60 is an outrage and a complete ripoff. Especially for those who already own the multiplayer maps that will be included. MS will do anything to milk this franchise dry. I can only hope, if enough people complain they'll lower the price.

This is after all an expansion to Halo 3, so I really expected it to look exactly like Halo 3, but Im pleasantly surprised to find that it does at least look a bit better. Cant wait to see Halo reach

... umm... this got my blood pumping! It looks like FUN!

I don't really know how to explain it- but I really LIKE the Halo art style. I don't need the 'grit' of Gears or the darkness of a game like Riddick. I like the fact I can see. I like the clean look that shows clear gameplay options. I wouldn't mind a new way of rendering Halo out- but I don't want the style to change. That's what keeps Halo on top of the online charts- it's gameplay is timeless and it's visual appeal is approachable enough to make you stay.

I'm very willing to pay full price for it- and from every video I've seen- I'm going to love playing it for a year or five.

(and it's got my Firefly crew in it!! WOOHOO!!! SHINY!)

What's everybody rambling about? IT'S HALO3! It's an EXPANSION! It's not going to be some brand new engine, jeebus! It looks very sleek, solid, and clean. this is only the survival mode, afterall.

This is not a brand new Halo game. We don't know for sure what the price point will be, so I don't think that argument is relevant right now. Gamers are becoming extremely finicky if you ask me. This does not look bad at all.

P.S. it's a very small group within Bungie that's working on this project. They're not going to invent some brand new engine by themselves.

If "Reach" turns out to be lame, THEN you can complain.

For the mofo truth.

When I saw the ODST in the trailer hitchikin a ride on the mongoose, all the nostalgia of the Warthog scene of the E3 Demo came back. ; (

I don't mind the same ol' graphics for ODST, its just an expansion; plus, halo, like many other video games, sells due to its great multiplayer. I'm excited about ODST's four player firefight mode, which, if it is anything like gears' horde mode,it will be a solid experience. While the single player looks a bit dated, it should be interesting due to the free roaming experience. I hope they incorporate free roaming into Halo: Reach.

And really, single player is a bonus for ODST, since most people will buy it for the halo: reach beta.

The visuals look great. A damn sight better then CoD. It has a lot of stuff going on, lots of really good effects, lots of excellent textures (there aren't a lot of SHIT textures, unlike a lot of FPS's out there, ie CoD, KZ 2, etc, their all atleast decent, and there are plenty or surprisingly good textures) and a LOT of stuff has physics in the games. Add that to big areas that you often converse at speed, long levels, etc, it looks pretty damn good. It just isn't the sort of style that lets you see how good the game looks. Look at Merchants of Brooklyn or whatever that cellshaded CryEngine 2 game is called. It looks phenomenal, but the style takes the edge off of that, especially when it isn't being played right there on a good screen.

Plus Halo has style like no other! Not just like, in the way normal things look, but also the way everything is designed. I think this looks a LOT better then Halo 3, not technocally, but it really sounds like its going to be different in all the ways it needs to be to take Halo from questionable to a masterpiece, even if it isn't well appreciated.

Does anybody actually read the previous posts before writing their own??? Bungie and M$ just said at the E3 show that it will be $60, so yeah, we do know what the price point will be.
