If you’re not familiar with Dex, you’re not alone; this game, developed by Dreadlocks Ltd., is only available on Steam early access but, for lovers of Cyberpunk and Flashback, it’s worth keeping an eye on. Largely inspired by the likes of Blade Runner, among other things, this action platformer RPG hybrid has undeniable potential. Look inside for some details and videos!
Impressions
At the moment the narrative aspect of this alpha is limited to a series of side quests while the player explores alongside some very Vangelis-esque music. Experience points naturally allow you to improve your characters stats but, beyond that, these points can also be used to obtain new augmentations and gear (though some of the items remain unavailable at this time). The atmosphere, as well as the audio-visual presentation, is top notch even if the animation lacks the extreme fluidity one would associate with Flashback. There’s still some work to do on the controls, however, with only partial support for controllers standing out the most (you can control the character but are unable to shoot, aim, or choose dialog options). The keyboard/mouse setup isn’t quite perfect either due to the fact that aiming is currently mapped to the middle mouse button while shooting sits on the left button. The inability to move while shooting and the tendency of enemies to shoot you even while off-screen might also require some adjustments in the development process. Still, these issues aside, Dex looks set to make quite an impression. Time will tell if they manage to pull it off and we were right to have faith in them.
