GSY Review Xbox One

The Halo series is without a doubt the most iconic franchise on Microsoft's consoles since 2001, so when Halo: The Master Chief Collection is about to get released on Xbox One, it is definitely a big deal. Now is time to find out what Gamersyde thought of this historic collection. Unsurprisingly, the full review is only available in French, but the verdict and the +/- section have been fully translated into English. If it's not enough, make sure to check our avalanche of videos of all four games.

Verdict

Whether you are a single player kind of guy or totally into multiplayer, Halo: The Master Chief Collection promises a massive amount of game time. Sure, the collection could have used some more polish, especially in the framerate department, but despite that, the overall experience is good and, more importantly, fun. The first three games may have gotten a bit old in some respects, but for the hardcore fans, each game will play as it used to, which we think is exactly what they have always wanted. The addition of new terminals in Halo 2 will give players even more to sink their teeth into if they are after more information on the game's background, and the new CG cutscenes will definitively give them some incentive to play through the famous sequel at least once more. Now the question is, are you willing to play games you've already completed before, especially if multiplayer is not really your thing? We don't have the answer to that one, but you might find it by watching all the videos we prepared, just below.
  • On the plus side
  • Four excellent game for the price of one
  • Huge content
  • The whole Halo multiplayer package in one game
  • Online co-op on all four games
  • Split screen co-op still available (unlocked and unsteady fps though)
  • Best way to discover the franchise before Halo 5
  • 1080p and (unsteady) 60 fps
  • The soundtracks
  • Halo 2 CG cutscenes
  • Halo 2 forge
  • Halo 2 ranking system is back
  • All missions unlocked from the get go
  • Some mission playlists are available
  • Skulls are all unlocked right from the start
  • Halo 4 almost look next gen
  • Cortana
  • Halo 5 beta ticket inside
  • On the down side
  • Slowdowns
  • Not as polished as we hoped
  • Gameplay may seem a bit too old school to some
  • Four games most of us know by heart
  • Halo 3 and 4 could have been enhanced graphically
  • Checkpoint system is still frustrating (and random) as hell
  • The wait for Halo 5

The wait is almost over!!! Huge respect to you guys for uploading all of these vids by the way!! All of the points you list as positives have me drooling! Negative points are meh, this package sets a true benchmark for "remasters". So much content! Although i feel the pain for those on slow connections who are downloading it digitally. Question now for me is do i buy the digital edition from US store to get it early or wait until Friday for disc version here in UK.

Bit of a shame about framedrops, maybe it can be patched later?

Thanks, some gaf members (and Halo fanboys) are so pathetic in their comments on the review that it's nice to see some people can appreciate the effort without feeling obliged to undermine our opinion. :)

This kinda makes me regret I didn't buy X1. I hope Sony will come up with something on PS4 to compensate. :)
Great job on bringing the videos, guys. Brings back the memories.

In terms of the criticism it is kinda what I expected. Halo's gameplay is dated by todays FPS standards. For fans of Halo this will be an amazing package though.

Definitely getting this. I think the main issue for me will be the unstable frame rate, everything else seems fine. But I play games maxed out on PC @ 1080/60 which can cause unstable frame rates when the action gets really hectic so I'm kind of used to it. You have to remember the developers are not world class (Saber Interactive and Ruffian Games) so they did the best they could with the time, resources and the hardware they've got (Xbox One isn't that powerful really). 343i I guess are busy working on Halo 5.

I love your reviews, gamersyde. Decent amount of text, plus and minus and mostly let the videos do the real talking. But I have one question, when does the slowdowns present themselves?

Single player: in all four games though it seems the update has made things better in Halo CE, they happen from time to time depending on what's happening - it can go under 30 fps in H4. Also, in my experience, usually at the beginning of an online multiplayer game in Halo 4.

Thank you for the answer. Although, does it happen very often? Even with the patch?

I haven't seen much improvement (if any) in most games after the update, which was mainly the addition of the multiplayer part of the collection. Like I said, it seems to have improved things in CE but I'd say it's pretty much the same for the others. That being said, I haven't had time to play as much as I would have wanted since the update was made available.
It does happen once in a while, it's not that disturbing, but sometimes it's more noticeable than you'd like. The beginning of the Covenant mission in Halo 3 is rather choppy for example (see video).

So I asked this before but didn't get an answer, would you say H3 looks the worst of all of them?

I feel like it does, but you'd know for sure having played them all yourself.

It's always been the ugliest of the bunch, why would a 1080p port make it any different? ;)

Still it looks way better than its 360 counterpart, but mainly thanks to the game's antialiasing.

kind of bizarre. the fact that it's been gone over by people who aren't bungie just seems weird to me. seems to be a little inconsistent visually

Oh really, that's what I said?

I said I don't like the people who undermine the opinions that are not theirs. It has nothing to do with what I think of their opinion. They can love and praise every single aspect of the game for all I care. :)

But maybe that's too subtle for you to get?

Started playing through Halo:CE using the old and remastered graphics.. swapping back and forth is neat but it just kind of brings to light how bad of a job they did remastering it. I think the original looks better. God damn that game is amazing.
