After Crash Bandicoot 2 days ago, it is the turn of Micro Mahcines World Series to try to seduce older gamers looking for a bit of nostalgia. After making its debut on NES, the franchise was adapted to many other platforms in the nineties, with even a great first episode in 3D with Micro Machines V3, so what is this 2017 return worth? Find out inside with our verdict and videos.
Verdict
Too light in terms of content, Micro Machines World Series may have forgotten why people enjoyed the franchise in the first place a little too soon, putting the emphasis on the new battle mode instead of the good old races. The developers have put a lot a lot of effort in the online component of the game, getting their inspiration from Overwatch with the inclusion of loot boxes (to unlock customization options for the 12 - yes, it isn't much - vehicles available). The problem is that they completely got rid of the single player championship, and they decided to limit the number of players to 4 in local multiplayer (AI included). No luck, that's probably not what the hardcore fans of the franchise were expecting, especially after Toybox Turbos, from which World Series borrows heavily (not to say recycles). The Hasbro sugar paint can fool no one, some of the tracks (of which there aren't many by the way) are taken straight from Toobox Turbos, which is a shame when you consider that the latter had a lot more content for players could sink their teeth into. If what you want is races, then maybe it'd be best to go for Toybox Turbos, which is currently on sale on Steam.
- On the plus side
- Tracks are pretty nice
- Local multiplayer is fun
- Racing without power-ups
- The return of Micro Machines
- 12 players online
- On the downside
- No single player championship
- Poor content
- 4 players only in local multiplayer, AI included
- 4 arenas only in local Battle Mode
- Online games can't be personalized
- Slowdowns on consoles, even on PS4 Pro
- Power-ups can make the game frustrating
- Too much focused on battle arenas instead of classic races
- Online isn't stable enough
