Trailer PC PS4

Ninja Theory reveals in-game footage of its quite interesting and promising title Hellblade. The game deals with psychosis and mental health as players control Senua, a Celtic warrior traumatised by a Viking invasion. Developed for PC and PS4, out in 2016. Get the videos, screens and details inside.

Ninja Theory to explore psychosis in new game - Hellblade

Ninja Theory, a Cambridge, UK based independent games developer, announced today that mental health and psychosis are the key themes explored in Hellblade. Inspired by historical events, Hellblade tells the story of Senua, a Celtic warrior who is left traumatised by a Viking invasion. This third person action game, being developed for PlayStation 4 and PC, will follow Senua’s journey into a vision of hell that is the manifestation of her own mental illness.

In order to ensure a sensitive and accurate portrayal of the subject, Ninja Theory has been working closely with Psychiatrist and Professor of Health and Neuroscience from the University of Cambridge, Paul Fletcher, as well as arranging to consult with people who have experience of mental health difficulties.

Paul Fletcher said: “True understanding of mental health is not simply about books, lectures or verbal descriptions but from deeper engagement on all levels. Working with Ninja Theory has shown me the potential that gaming has for sharing in a character's experiences and engendering empathy in ways that go well beyond those offered by simple academic descriptions. Maybe this approach will contribute powerful new ways of challenging stigma.”

Hellblade is being developed by a small team of 15 people under a development model Ninja Theory call Independent AAA. This approach sees the game being created with all the creative freedom of ‘indie’ development, but with the production values of AAA blockbuster games.

Tameem Antoniades, Chief Creative Director at Ninja Theory, said: “In Hellblade we are pursuing creative independence in order to explore a compelling subject matter and gaming experience that would not be possible under the current retail model. In movie terms, this would be a quality independent film, not a Hollywood blockbuster. Digital self-publishing means that we can offer a smaller, but high quality game at around half the price of retail games.”

The project is supported by the Wellcome Trust, a global charitable foundation which aims to build a greater public understanding of science, and in particular health.

Iain Dodgeon, Creative Partnerships Manager at the Wellcome Trust, added: “More and more, games have an exciting and innovative role to play in giving us new perspectives on health and mental health challenges. Rather than being a didactic game teaching us about psychosis, Hellblade allows us to explore it through the creation of a compelling and complex character, and the world that she inhabits.

Hellblade will be available in 2016.

What they said.

Watching the dev diary...It looks like the combat will be slow-ass. Meh.
Also you can tell the game is low budget. Not a bad thing if the studio was capable to pull out some amazing combat in their games.

FFS guys, I think you all missed the point. Presentation is not everything, the game looks good, besides it's early days.

I am most excited for and hope they deliver with exploring psychological nuances within the gameplay and graphical presentation. Tackling issues such as mental illness just goes to show how gaming as a medium is maturing and becoming very adult.

I guess some people prefer the Game of Thrones type of experiences, all high budget and not much substance, whilst others prefer the likes of the Hannibal series, a psychological roller coaster. To each their own.

Chromatic aberration?

It's the new lens flare, just as I predicted. Looks good if you're going for photo realism, though.

They said long time ago that they were going for something like over-the-shoulder camera rather than your typical zoomed out third person action camera, which can obviously mean, slow...and i am not a fan of that.

While I give Ninja Theory credit for ditching the garish colour scheme of Devil may Cry: Devil May Cry

http://guides.gamepressure.com/dmcdevilmaycry/gfx/...

but I feel this just looks like its trying to be like Metal Gear Rising with its Blade Mode where it goes over the shoulder - they did also cite Shinji Mikami's Godhand as an influence for this design choice - but you're stuck in in that style for the whole game which seems pretty meh

No. Its like an almost 80's red/green 3D-like distortion around objects. It's a nagative result in photography with less equipment . And it seems current gen games like to replicate it, even in games where you're supposed to be looking through eyes. Lol.

I appreciate that visuals are important, but I do not think that that was the main thing they were selling in the trailer, but rather the main protagonist's different states of mind, having her literally fight her demons.

Granted, the graphics aren't the best but it is certainly sufficient in getting the message across, and for such a small team at this early pre-alpha stage I think it's quite impressive. Shows how resourceful they are being.

Kostchtchie is sort of right. For some games, its used to show low health, or when you take a hit. It was used extensively in BF4 whenever you took a bullet or a explosion went off, until they patched it out.

Very little is shown but the gfx are good. I like the dev showing the game as it is. Bet most games shown at E3 won't look when released and get a downgrade and have performance issue. People will always complain either way. Morever it is a 13 person team. The shoulder view, fighting game style combat is something I am not sure. But the concept, look of the game is really good. I hope this turns out well.

Chromatic abberation. Current trend just like lens flare is and was before, and motion blur before that, and bloom/HDR before that.

Lords of the Fallen has it too, but i read they patched it so you can turn it off. Looks annoying and plain bad. Like old school bad coloring adjustment lol

I hope this doesnt become a thing, unless its an effect like disortion from a HUD when you get hit, hacked or character going crazy and visuals gets disoriented for a brief second.

Looks interesting. I hope there will be more "weight" to the body animation, than in their previous games. Don't get me wrong...I loved Heavenly Sword, Enslaved and DMC, but their character moves transitions were always a little bit choppy.
