Wii

A tiny screen from Mario Kart on the Nintendo Wii unveils up to eight players battles in one of the ten announced arenas. This balloon mode should also allow teams to compete against each other. The release date is set to April 11th of 2008 in Europe.

Sadly, my eyes are bleeding. I don't know where to start...the floor texture? the octagonal balloons with no string? the roof texture that will do weird patterning stuff when it moves....

Its all just awesome...

no doubt it will play well though (although double dash was a real let down...so I hope they fix the issues with that)

It's not lazy, Nintendo just figured they can make more money if they don't actually have anyone working on petty things like graphics or good technology.

That's got to be a joke right?

The DS does better graphics than that.

Caustic comment or not, I do agree.
The less details, the more focus on the battle and the fun. My all time favourite battle mode for home console versions is the one in Super Mario Kart (the one in Mario Kart DS was very good as well).

The most important thing in this news is not the screenshot, it's: 8 players battle and team battle, which is a big first in the series.
You will not be looking at the backgrounds while trying to hit someone with a green turtle shell when SEVEN other players will try to do the same to you.

lmao love it wen nintendo fan boys are in denial and keep lying to themselves about their precious repetitive boring titles .. i mean how many more mario karts can there be before they realise new tracks and wow 8 whole players will not enhance the game enough its just plain ignorance ... its just nearly as bad as EA in my eyes, Mario has never intrested me and never will my mind needs to be strained to be kept working mario games alike just turn it off leaving me with some what a fun experience BUT ..... a experience ive played over again .. and again and again.

A comment full of contempt. And you could not be more wrong, some - if not most - games don't improve through the use of new technology and graphics, but through new features and gameplay. And nobody playing a Mario Kart game is focusing on the fact it's a Mario game. It's a fun game to play, period. If you get bored playing a game, just don't buy the new iteration instead of insulting those who happen to like it.

now saying it looks like a snes game was a little harsh, but that REALLY does look like an N64 title. look at the buildings in the distance, straight outta mario 64. this looks terrible. as good as the gamplay may be, the game looks like ass.

The player models actually look nice to me
There could be a reason why the stage is the way it is as other screens have showed 3d track environments. Couldn't it be the stage looks the way it does intentionally and is just a part of the track theme?

this is what happens when nintendo jumps into the online world this late in the game. they probably can't figure out how to work around lag, thus the eyesore graphics.

It's a RACING GAME. What revolutionary new features are you expecting from this exactly? While the graphics aren't exactly the best you'll ever see, some of you are being more than a little harsh. This is an extremely low quality image, go watch some video footage, it looks on par with Double Dash, if not better. While I'm sure the Wii is capable of more, I'm not sure we need a hyper realistic Mario Kart game.

On top of the weak image, this stage inparticular looks so bad because it's a remake of a classic SNES stage. It's SUPPOSED to look old school, it's the theme of the level. This is a far better example. http://uk.wii.ign.com/dor/mario-kart-wii/949580/im...

C'mon guys, at least do some research before mindlessly bashing a game.
The ignorance in this thread is astounding.

Because of course, anyone who says anything postive about a system is a fanboy. Did you actually read my post, or are you just going to concede that you actuall know nothing about this game?

What you're saying is basically the equivalent of making fun of the graphics in MGS3 based on the original Metal Gear that was given away with it as a bonus. "LOL, it looks like a NES game!" Yeah.. Missed the point much?

No, it's not a remake of a SNES level, no SNES battle mode level looked like that, I know because I played the game a LOT. There were 4 battle stages in the SNES one, 2 had tarmac, one was a beach, one was ice and that's it. No brown/fake wood textures like that in the battle stages at all.

wait wait im owned cuz he said " Games dont improve through the new use of technology? " hmmm abit hypocritical of you saying that, the wii itself and its dodgy controller is ... New technology!! so arent you having fun with your so called new technology, our does it still not in itself bring new features and gameplay and make them available? - WAIT! they do so in the words of samhain81 - OWNED!

It doesn't have to be realistic to look good,
but I would expect something a little more like this in 2008.
