GSY Video PC

Ray tracing obviously adds a lot to visual fidelity in terms of lighting, but it's also quite a demanding technology which can affect performance dramatically. With everything else Metro Exodus does to push the hardware in the extreme preset, it's not surprising to see that capping the framerate at 30 fps does not even guarantee it will remain steady in 4K in some areas of the game. We've prepared a comparative video showcasing RTX with DLSS off. Enjoy!
Update: 4 videos added, among which one new comparison between RTX High and no RTX and a 1440p/60fps video in ultra and RTX set to high.

Apparently RTX makes for a visible difference mostly in indoor locations

this was RTX on ultra? either something is wrong with my eyes or there is not much difference. how about during the night?
From all I saw of RTX, it shines best in low light interior locations with reflective surfaces (e.g blood/water on the floor). the upcoming Remedy game could be a good example

I'm running 60fps, 1440p (even on my 4k TV I find this accepteable) on extreme with hairworks turned on and RTX to it's max setting (forget what it's called).

I'm running AMD Threadripper (last years generation) and a GTX 2080Ti. Makes a huge difference, it's awesome looking.

I am looking forward to when we can use raytracing to affect core gameplay (seeing gameplay related things in reflections, subtle changes in lighting that only GI can provide to give you a hint something is arround etc. etc.)

The difference is there but you wouldn't notice it without actively looking for it. I understand the fundamental difference and importance of using ray tracing for lighting, light behaves naturally and therefore allows for more realistic presentation. However, there is no wow factor to this generational graphical leap. In fact, it doesn't necessarily look prettier in a lot of scenes which is not surprising since realism does not necessarily mean pretty. I can see how this going to be a hard sell for gamers in its current state whether due to the price of RTX cards or implementation in games.

It's certainly not worth the huge sacrifice to framerate. I watched a side by side comparison and while there were instances where the scene benefitted from the additional bounce light. Both clearly looked like video games so it felt a little bit pointless. Plus games these days strive to fake this sort of global illuminatiin and they've actually got really good at it. Which makes the difference seems even smaller. Yes the lighting it technically more physically accurate. But if the results are often times identical is it really worth cutting your framerate in half?

The "sacrifice" is 20-30% in this game. What the hell is your problem? :( You can't seriously expect real-time GI work "for free".

I’m saying the minor differences aren’t worth the sacrifice. Not that it should come for free.

Exactly. You realize the drop in FPS all the time, though, unless you have a 2080Ti.
