Developer Diary PC Xbox 360 PS3

In this new dev diary of Driver: San Francisco, the guys at Reflections explain why they came up with the whole shift idea. Whatever your opinion about this rather original feature, it seems to bring a new pace and dynamism to the car chases. And it's the best opportunity you'll ever have to fill Sam Beckett's shoes - and I don't mean the Irish writer here obviously.

Everything about this game seems wrong, yet it somehow reminds me of the fun chases and replays of the first Driver :s
Gahh. I don't know.

"Shift" is bullshit. Game shows so much promise as well :(

I've been really put off by the whole shift thing since it's announcement. Yet everyone that's had hands on playtime with the game has had good things to say about it. I still have major concerns however, I think it's whole concept is too far removed from what driving games should all be about, especially the driver series. The whole aspect where you have to take care of the car so you can complete the mission without totalling it is now gone. Where you nail a perfect bit of skilled driving through traffic to catch up with the bad guy is now gone. The love for the car you've aquired because of its coolness is now gone............and NOS on every car in the game, WTF is that about?

it's about fun, and creating a decent gameplay mechanic that works well. there are 2 types of game, those that CAN do narrative and story and execute it well to compliment the core gameplay, or those that TRY and fail. past driver games tried to be the former, but ended up being the later, this new game seems to be option 3...screw the story and screw context, so rather then try to take itself seriously, it's putting gameplay at the forefront of its design. is the context of the shifting mechanics rediculous? yes. does it add more possibilites strategically and gameplay wise? hell yes. same goes for every car having nitro. it may not make sense, but it sure as hell makes each car fun and fast to drive.

i'm one of the first people to put up their hand as someone who LOVES narrative and story in games. but if you cant do it well (all previous driver games) dont do it at all and just make sure the game is fun. i'm personally willing to overlook the context for the sake of fun. and this game looks pretty damn fun imo.
