First 10 minutes Xbox 360 PS3

Silent Hill: Downpour has already been released in North America but Europeans will only get their hands on this new installment developed by Vatra Games next week. Despite some unexplainable technical issues which will clearly keep some players away from it, this new episode in the series is quite promising in terms of atmosphere. Sure, when playing Downpour, we did not feel the agonizing sense of fear and unease the first three games conveyed, but it nonetheless has its moments and if you can get passed the terrible framerate, you will discover a game in which sadness and horror go hand in hand. The story will keep you interested until the end and it will take you around 10 hours or so to complete - provided you try to complete a few of the game's optional side quests. A game definitely worth trying if Homecoming was a disappointment to you.

Not interested then, seems horror games have gone the same way as horror movies :(

It does not mean the game will not make you feel uneasy or scared. :)

If you play at night, you probably will need a break once in a while. The thing is I don't feel as traumatized as I was when I played the first three games. But then again, I got older. :)

tbh, horror game franchises (whether action based or not) tend to only offer the "horror" in the first installment. RE1, dead space 1, fatal frame 1 etc etc. then they lose it. SH is no exception. the first game on PSone scared the shit out of me, with a constant feeling of unease. and it retains that to this day, as does the first resident evil etc (comparatively less so, but stil the scariest of the franchise). what kept me playing SH beyond that first game wasnt the lacking horror elements. it was the intrigue of the world itself. i liked how there was no black and white narative. it was left to interpretation. and it was cool finding more stuff out about the place itself and it's history. if downpour offers that, then i'm interested in playing it. if it doesnt even offer that, then i dont want to touch it.

Fatal Frame 2 was much scarier/better game to me.

On topic - Downpour is not worth even rental/second hand buy. Not only the atmosphere is different, but enemy design is awful and the game runs like a slog. -_-

i think it depends if you played them in order or not. the first game is scarier by default just becasue it's new. sequels are typically just more of the same or they veer towards action (resident evil) hence they dont have the same effect on you...case in point. resident evil 2. wasnt scary AT ALL. people complain that resi 4 was the downfall of the "horror" series. but in reality, the first game is the only one that could be considered scary at all. just a case of desensatisation i guess?

SH lost it's "fear factor" after the first becasue i got used to it. by the second game, as great as it was as a whole, it was much more about the world and characters then the "horror". from what i hear downpour retain those elements. it's got the exploration, story, characters, history...it just lacks the horror...but then it hasnt had it for years anyway....kind of a non-issue.

As far as I'm concerned the last real horror game was SH3. Even Fatal Frame has gone down the drain with shitty 3DS gimmicks and Wii ports. I won't even be renting this game

The Fatal Frame games for the Wii aren't ports. One is the fourth installment of the series and the other is a remake of the second game. The camera may be fixed behind the characters now, but both games still play and feel just like the first three.

Well, let's see... within the first 10 minutes, you're forced to kill a seemingly completely innocent guy, brutally and without provocation.

Seriously, Designers need to stop forcing players to do things that they wouldn't normally do, without any rhyme or reason. If there was set-up, where I understood this guy to be a pedophile or something, I'd understand. And I don't care if that's revealed later (dunno, just saying), the way it's presented here is just shit. Forcing me to slash an innocent (as innocent as any prisoner is, but hell... I dunno... he could be in there for traffic tickets), is bullshit.

PASS.
