Screenshot 8: Robert De Niro face?

This won't be a wait-and-see for me, because I know critics love Rockstar no matter what. But a demo would be nice, like it was for Heavy Rain.

Agreed, I wouldn't mind a demo as well.

i've heard some dissapoitment bout the pacing & investigation/interrogation being just as pedestrian as fahranheit/heavy rain was. that would be so utter crap after so much hype.

I don't know why people keep thinking this game is going to be like Heavy Rain.

I dunno. If this is anywhere near as heart racingly thrilling as Heavy Rain sometimes was I will buy a hat and then eat it. Possibly two. I don't think there's any reason to think this'll have anything in common with a game that single mindedly devotes itself to a unified control language and then building nothing but suspense.

I wager this'll have much more in common with Team Bondi's own The Getaway games than people seem prone to believe.

nah i doubt it. I think it will be far slower paced than The Getaway. I think we're basically looking at Mafia mixed with CSI mixed with Mass effect ... could be great if they pull it off. Have a feeling thats asking alot though..especially now people are getting hyped for it..it's bound to disappoint to some extent.

I really hope theres not alot of hand holding..and consequences for your actions. Heavy Rain was very structured but it still offered the illusion of choice

Sure, yeah. I think The Getaway and Mafia are more or less identical, though, apart from Mafia actually being pretty fantastic when that came out and The Getaway being a great deal less than fantastic. You've got period cars though obviously so if by slower paced you mean slower cars then sure. Also, the narrative of this is noir/thrillery and not actiony like The Getaway, so in that regard I can certainly see this having a calmer groove similar to Mafia.

This is gonna be less linear than Mafia and The Getaway both though, we know that much.

As for Heavy Rain having illusion of choice, I reckon it's more about consequence than choice. It's such a reaction based game with reflex/spontanious actions it's kind of this game that wraps around who you are and your genuine reaction to things. It doesn't slow down to let you make conscious, calculated decisions. When those on the fly choices then have consequences - that are very dynamic in how much/little they allow you to screw up, to boot - it puts immense pressure on your performance and that's what creates the suspense. When you know you're constantly causing butterfly effects that may well get people killed or alter your path - and the fact that those effects are initally ambiguous - there's actually a sense of investment there. I don't really feel like I ever consciously "chose my adventure" or anything. I was just reacting to things and holding on to my butt, sweating bullets. Oh and I *actually grit my teeth* when slamming down on a pair of scissors to cut my finger off. I.. yeah. Don't ask me why I thought using scissors was a good idea. :P

AAaaannnnNNNyyhooOOOoo. My point about being like The Getaway was mainly that it's still a game where you're driving around to mission markers and shooting dudes in the face. Possibly-but-not-definitely with a somewhat questionable cover mechanic ala The Getaway. Heavy Rain is more akin to a point and click adventure, but instead of clicking on things you walk up to them and do contextual button presses. Button presses and interactions based on a unified language enabling the game to throw absolutely anything at you instead of needing to fall back on mechanics. That way it's allowed to evolve constantly in terms of your interactions, circumventing the crux that - for instance - narrative heavy shooters have of *being forced* to alternate between story and shooting a bazillion dudes no matter how narratively unsound the shooting is.

In the 4th screenshot you can see that motion and faces are recorded separatly. Normally he would look up to the other cop but he looks down. I noticed that several times in the trailers.

And the hats don't cast a shadow. The forehead is much to bright unter the flap.

That kills the realism of the perfect captured faces. Very recognizable in the trailers. Some person look very real, others look still fake.

The faces and the movement are recorded separately, but the movement on the head is recorded with the full body motion capture. So the character looking down would be exactly how both the actors played off against each other in the full body motion capture. I don't know why you think it looks so odd. It looks perfectly natural to me.

I think you're wrong. I think the lighting is pretty accurate there. And you can clearly see in other shots that the hats do indeed cast shadows.

I think it's funny how so many gamers think they are experts on what's realistic and what's not. And it's especially funny that some folks seem to act like they've spotted something the devs haven't.

Sure, but if you look down in full body motion capture a face of a sitting and straight looking person doesn't match. Try it. Bow forward and look up like in the 4th screenshot and then do it sitting. You eyebrows will be different e.g..

And just watch the trailers. The face animations of people standing still or sitting look very real while on walking people it looks a bit odd.

Body language and facial expressions play together. If you record it separatly you get strange effects.

Are you talking about the man in the middle in the 4th screenshot? It looks to me like he's looking at the cop's stomach because he's about to do that friendly, fake boxing thing as I presume they know each other well.

I am very excited to play this game and i have no doubt it will have some top notch storytelling, but i am concerned with the replay value of this game. i love the games rockstar make because i know i get my moneys worth, but this seems like a different type of game rockstar has never done before and it kind of worries me.

they have said in previews that you cannot shoot at people and that you obey traffic laws (aside from chase sequences), and it seems to keep you from doing all the ridiculous stuff you could do in every other rockstar game. which i can respect, as it really plays well into this sort of game, but what happens when i finish the story and all its side quest? i can see myself getting bored of this really quickly if i cannot mess around with the open world such as getting in trouble with the cops or just shooting and blowing up random stuff. also, no multiplayer in here like their recent GTA IV and Red Dead.

I just really hope i get my moneys worth out of this game. i didn't feel like heavy rain was worth its full price, as i really did enjoy the story but did not want to replay the entire game again as the whole quick time sequences got old and i mostly found myself playing just for the story itself rather then gameplay.

£40 ALOT if you're playing nothing but a poorly acted/plotted movie. I could get LA confidential new for £3.

Too much of this is left with a question mark for me yet.. plus i want to see if one of the versions gets the short end of the stick..as has been the norm with rockstar's games

Do you only play "sandbox" games then and don't like any games that don't have a free roam mode?? You must hate arcades then?

I do hate arcades, too much money for a game i can pay a flat rate for or download online. i like games without the sandbox option, but i just know rockstar is known for making the best open world games, so i will feel like i am not playing this game at its full potential is all i am saying.
