"We're gonna need a bigger boat"
Nice jaws comment that made me smile :)
Resistance 2 is where things get generic. That's a more capable core game, and a lot of the progression in it is (and I've said this before) evocative of how Halo carries itself, although with infinitely less sophisticated encounters, because R2 is super arcadey.
However, whatever unique streak R1 had going for it, R2 squanders with its move from europe to america and tricking everyone out with typical sci fi shooter gear. Gear which has become uniform with the sort of arsenal you get with any game. No more nutty "bullet swarm" or incendiary foam stuff, just your stock fucking space marine gear. And perhaps most importantly; It's no longer about humanity with pea shooters in contrast to the relentlessly alien Chimera, the way R1 so successfully portrayed.. now it's kinda just your usual sci fi freakout.
For 3 I hope they tap into the things that set Resistance apart to begin with. I know that's a foreign concept to people who wrote it off along with the entire Playstation 3 platform for all those years, but there was something fairly appealing buried within that original game. I hope they can have R3 evoke it again, and finally make a proper great shooter out of it in the process.
I both like and absolutely hate how the Covenent Elites chatter and are portrayed in Halo for example. It was Bungie's biggest mistake and a massively disapointing shock- almost as shocking as playing as the Arbiter despite how he is actually pretty cool as well.Halo2 was great in ways but definitely a love and hate thing coming from playing Halo1 solidly for years
Mystery is much more powerful way of how you express these types of story and Bungie pretty much destroyed all of that by this decision.I tend to view Halo1 for example as the real story of what happened while still enjoying adventures with the Chief in another parallel - stupid and i'm not sure i really believe that but i want to.It's why i'm not going to watch the new Tron film as frankly it's just not going to be the same
But anyway Resistance has so far resisted the urge to go all talkie and that's to my mind actually a good place for them to be.The trouble with previous Resistance games however is they're not great games.Maybe R3 will address some of the more obviously wrong regards to gameplay because it's always felt like a game to me and nothing like as compelling as you would hope- R2 proved worse as well
As for the Covenant being understandable, I get that it's annoying that they don't have the mystery, thus making them a less straight-forward enemy. I do, however, applaud Bungie for giving the "enemy" their own motivations other than "I'm the evil bad guy out to destroy everything with no reason" regardless of how ultimately trite the "holy war" thing has become( although if you read the books, you come to realize there is a lot more to it)...
