This. Although I would say best franchise ever - just my opinion. :)

With Snowblind behind this, I am absolutely certain that this will be a great game. Very much looking forward! I do think the visuals are a bit hit and miss; looks great in some areas, but quite bad in others. Still looks decent enough though.

I put sci fi and fantasy seperate, though I like fantasy a tad more.
So interms of fantasy settings, LOTR is the best one IMO, when it comes to sci fi...well too many to choose from just like fantasy, but so far I would say Mass Effect for me.

Graphically, it looks good, but as far as gameplay delivers, I think we are good :)

I'm sure gameplay footage will be shown soon enough. I mean, we don't even know when it's out yet!

Yeaaaah, graphically it actually looks pretty good - after viewing the trailer for a second time. I think it's visually better than say DA2 anyway.

LOTR may be the best fantasy franchise ever when it comes to movies, but they have a very difficult time translating that to good games. I would say the Elder Scrolls have them beat hands down when it comes to fantasy game worlds. There is so much lore and backstory involved, not to mention all the races, power stuggles, factions, etc, etc.

BTW, I haven't really seen much about this game yet. Does anyone know how deep it will be? Is it just another hack n slash, a hack n slash with RPG aspects, or a more open RPG?

I like the design of the characters. No weird heroes. Just a ranger, a mage and a fighter.

As a Tolkienite I would usually have you burned at the stakes, but I actually agree. The LOTR franchise has been wasted in the video game genre thus far, but this looks like it might actually break that trend... it's at least taking risks by having a new narrative in the universe, rather than playing it safe like practically ever other game has done. TES is a compelling universe in its own right, but let's not forget that it takes a heck of a lot of inspiration from Tolkien's work - although, then again, which fantasy world doesn't? I go on about it in practically every thread, but I can't state enough how excited I am for Skyrim as a fantasy nerd; not only because of all the gameplay promises and visual updates, but also because of its artistic direction and design.

If you've ever played/seen/heard about Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance or the Champions of Norrath series (both made by Snowblind, who are making this), then you'll have a very good idea what to expect. Diablo's probably a decent comparison.

Huh, sounds really interesting. I didn't realize they were taking a more RPG approach to this. Like you said, LOTR games have been wasted with linear, action hack n slash games in the past. What they need is an open world RPG game set in the LOTR universe. I'm not sure how open this is, but from what I have seen, it seems a bit linear. As much as I love the ES games, I would definitely take a break from them if someone could make a great, open world LOTR game.

Look up 'The White Council'. It was being made by EA, and was supposed to be an open-world RPG set in the Tolkien universe but prior to the War of the Ring - it was every LOTR fan's dream.

Unfortunately production was 'suspended until further notice' a couple of years back - in other words, it was canned - and then EA lost the rights to the franchise.

Such a shame...
