Another essential factor is that most games are cross generational and this does impact how far the developers can push these games in both design and visuals. With all of this in mind, while Forbidden West looks gorgeous, I believe most AAA games at the end of this console generation will look much better. I'm sure if Guerrilla Games releases another Horizon game only on PS5 in a few years from now, it will look much better than Forbidden West - which already looks gorgeous.
Either way, gameplay is always more important than graphics. I would take a great and fun SNES or PS1 game over a boring PS5/XSX game any day. While games will always improve graphically, I hope more developers invest in gameplay innovation and creating new ways to experience games, like doing something unique like Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, or creating new systems like the Nemesis system in the Shadow of Mordor games - which as far as I know, no other developer is doing.
The biggest criticism Forbidden West is getting is being more of the same, like more of an expansion instead of a proper sequel that evolves the formula forward in significant ways. No matter how great a game looks, if it's not as exciting as it could and should have been in the gameplay department, it won't make the game more fun.
I don't want to play in 1080p just to get 60fps :/
