Xbox 360

Tecmo's fighting game showcases with these fifty images, very beautiful as usual. Nevertheless, I expect Team Ninja to fix that lack of real shadows (not even talking about self-shadowing).

I think these pics are from the "photo mode" because there isn't any motion blur in the main game. The shadows look fine to me though.

Apparently there's gameplay footage shown of the game from one of the uncommon sites. Did you guys get to play the game or see the game being played?

Hopefully you'll have videos of it soon. The game looks a lot better in motion. The way the lighting warps around the character's clothing and skin is awesome.

Yeah, in motion this game looks really special. It's evident in the second HD trailer, especially.

I'd really like blur in fights aswell, I think it looks great. Of course I don't really enjoy playing DOA, but here's horray for it looking sweet. :)

I agree with Snoopy this game really needs some dynamic shadowing, whilst it looks amazing already some richer shadows would really make it sing. The VF5 demos seem to have it, i'm sure the 360 can do this without breaking a sweat.

I think that the overall look of DOA benefits greatly by some of the effects that they're using here--I think motion blur makes it look significantly different and that they should consider it optional in game..I know the concerns, but this is DOA..I'm pretty sure it's about the flashy style as much as anything else.

Itagaki removed the in-game motion blur because it made the fighting too difficult. It makes sense, but I'd like to see the motion blur in action.

Looks like last gen with better backgrounds. Even in the two doacentral videos, it looks VERY underwhelming.

One of the top 3 worst-looking X360 games.

Beautiful graphics and I'm sure the game will play as well, with the new fighting style. Itagaki said it's a more tactical game this time round.

I'm unimpressed. DOA3 with new packaging. An expansion pack maybe, but on the 360. This game could REALLY use a dynamic shadowing system with self shadowing, more geometry, and a few more shader effects or atleast more evident. That could make all the difference in the world. Such as it is, at this point in time this game is not on my 'to get list'.

I think what they're (rightfully) afraid of is that their lovedoll (not that I know anything about lovedolls) style models would come across as even less lifelike if lit realistically. I mean, really, these are anime designs in 3D. Most companies opt for the cel shaded look to convey that, but this tries to sit on two chairs.

On the one hand it tries to put amazing detail into the backgrounds making them look as realistic as possible, but without any texture (not textures, mind) on the bodies of the fighters, they can't really keep up with that. What happens is that they have this technically awesome game that barely looks half as awesome as.. it REALLY does, if that makes sense.

I really get the dilemma though, by giving the characters more facial features and texture they won't look as decidedly anime-y, probably losing a lot of their appeal to many people. At the same time, if they don't, this game series will never look any different. Quite frankly it basically reached its peak already with DOA2.

The characters themselves will never change, I don't understand what people expect the game to look like. Without radically changing the style of the characters, no matter how many polys they add to the characters they will still look the same. DOA has always used a semi-realistic anime style, that will probably never change.

I think the graphics are excellent, but I guess people would rather have all thier games look alike. Personally I'm afraid we may lose some nice artistic styles next gen becuase everyone thinks the games should be as realistic as possible with heavy use of normal maps, which is just gonna make everything look the same and boring.

I share your concern bloodforge, but at the same time, I think it's probably time DoA changed. I mean, look at Tekken, look at VF, fighting games very high in regard that always change. Both on the inside and on the outside advances are made. I don't really get DoA anymore, why even release updates when they basically just blend together anyway? I think people had a truly hard time separating Ultimate from 3, but those were two "entirely different games".

The topic of artistic expression I'd really like to take somewhere else. The forum maybe?

The thing is that VF and Tekken really haven't changed in graphical appearance either(nor has the gameplay, ugh Tekken 5 is freaking boring), they have always gone with a realistic look, which they are still using. I prefer DOA keep the look it has, it differentiates it from the others.

That is of course plain wrong though. The look of all the Tekkens and VFs are drastically different and so is the gameplay. Gameplay is harder to judge without getting into it, at least a little, but the look is just really striking.

Sure, it's never been cartoony, but the designs are way different anyway. I for one like the look of Tekken 4 best, with its soft models and.. I dunno.. "warmer" lighting. Tekken 5 went back very much to Tekken 1 in terms of design, and some kind of quasi-Tekken 3 look for the atmospheric effects.
