Xbox 360

Well, there it is, this strange game that could only have ever been produced in Japan. First released in the still striving arcades, and now parted to the 360, iDOLM@STER is part mini-games, part conversations with multiple choices. It's a really weird mix, but it's certainly working well enough to warrant this port in Japan.
This first video shows the first 15 minutes of the game, with some mini-games, some communication "lessons" and the important choosing of the girl's clothes. The second part will be online tomorrow, with the debut single and the first audition and TV coverage.
Update: Second part online, with a casting (good luck understanding what's going on!) and a rather terrible first TV!

I can't help but be somewhat interested. I'm a sucker for different slants on game ideas.

Awsomeness. Namco needs to localize this for other regions. I could see them making loads of money on DLC outfits/items for any region.

Wow, anyone notice that the format is EXACTLY like that of an H-game? Even the "man" that has no shape nor face.

Still amazingly cute though.

Blim, post when the H-CGI pics come out hehe. jk.

It's not the "H-game" format. It's the ADV format. All anime text games do this.

And this game is pure love.

And Blimblim, if you're reading this, I have a request, could you let the characters speak out their entire lines when you're recording your playthrough? It's kinda hard to get a feel for the character when they're stopped mid-sentence every time ^^;

I imported it also, I'm kind of having fun with it....

I still don't really get what the choices corrospond to though.

The Cel shading is done very well, nice selfshadowing also.

I could see this coming to the west, if they leave the songs in Japanese and just rework the voices and sub titles it could work.

Not sure what you mean by "rework the voices", all they really need to do is translate the menu/subtitles and it'd be ok with me, keep the girls voices in japanese, it'd be a niche game anyway.

Well yes, but then people would complain that the game is voiced in Japanese Only.

It would be better to support both English and Japanese, so people can choose what ever they like.

Thanks for the new vid, Blim! What exactly are you supposed to be doing in the audition part? I see that it has "dance, visual and vocal" at the bottom with corresponding buttons, do you have to press them at a certain time or just what you think the judges(i assume those silhouette guys in the corner are judges) would like to see?

Basically you have to score 5 yellow stars, 3 Blue and 2 red in all 3 attempts to get first place.

The higher your characters stats in any given area will result in a better score when you appeal to that judge by pressing the corresponding button.

I don't think there is any set pattern it's just luck whether you get a good audtion or not, at least from my experience.

actually, you have 3 rounds to make 9 appeals. in those 9 appeals you try to rack up as high a score as possible with the 3 judges. the top 3 for each judge gets that judge's points. the bottom group for that round loses a point. the point values vary based on what stat is worth the most. the most valued stat is 5, then 3, than the least valued one is 2 (in most of my games it ended up being vocal/dance/visual 5/3/2); for a total of 10 points each round, and 30 for the entire audition.

at that point it depends on how many people pass the audition, it ranges from 1-4 (it says when you pick which audition to do). and depending on which, the top 1-4 scoring groups pass the audition.

its blind but hardly random. the higher your judge score the higher your chance of getting into the top 3 for that judge for that round, but as you see from screenshots, there are 5 other groups trying to pass the audition and they will be appealing for points as well. if your score for the round is in the top 3 for that judge, than you get that judge's points for the round (5,3, or 2 as I noted above). its all a matter of whether you can gather enough points.

and there's very much a strategy involved, though once again, you're somewhat blind (since you can't see how many points the other 5 groups are racking up). its quite obvious that the judge worth the most points will be appealed to the most, while the other two are appealed to less. meaning you need less points to get into the top 3 for the lesser 2 judges than for the top judge. thus if you want to do well, you need to stagger your appeals accordingly. also notice the colored ppl on the left side, matching the colors of the judges. as the colors drain that means the judge is being appealed to more (which means you need a higher score with that judge to get into the top 3). the more color the judge has the less he's been appealed to (which means you need less points). once again, you need to plan out you appeals accordingly.

there's even a sneaky strategy to play the judges. when a judge has been appealed to to the point where all the color is drained, that judge leaves the audition completely and that judge's points become a nonfactor. no more future points (obviously) but also points already scored are off the record. so one strategy, that sometimes works, is to get the other groups to waste all their appeals trying to win one stat (usually the one worth 5 points), and then get that judge to leave, making them lose all those points.
