Trailer PC PS4 Xbox One

Unreal Engine 4 has been a bit forgotten lately, but Epic certainly reminded everyone of its existence with a rather amazing annoucement: The engine now costs $19 a month, with 5% of the game's revenue, and it even comes with the whole source code of the engine! Impressive stuff, directly aimed at Unity and Cryengine's new pricing. And to prove how good the engine is, here is a new trailer!
Update: Added a video showing short sequences from many games using UE3 or UE4, released recently or still to be released.

Ah yes epic, they always make some of the best tech demoes....it's too bad my PC never gets to actually try them out. :(

It looks to be an impressive engine, but it seems very few devs are using it so far (more seem to be favouring cryengine). And if epic themselves don't turn that samaritain or infiltrator demo into an actual game i'll be pretty damn annoyed. The elemental demo i didn't much care for.

Its just a tech demo...its not a game...and the purpose is to sell the mindshare to get developer contracts, does not mean other game devs have to only use this engine or whatever...its realy marketing.

CryEngine has been competitive...

So has DICE's Frostbite engine and others...still inhouse proprietary 3d engines are much better basically you don't want halo to run using this engine.

It's almost as impressive as Ubi's Snowdrop Engine, to be fair. Both are very impressive. However, I get the impression that what we see, is what we'll get with the Snowdrop engine, whereas most of this footage, although graphically gorgeous looking, still has that tech-demo vibe to it where you sense that an extremely powerful GPU was used for brute force just to show off the engine at it's best. The feature sets look impressive, node based just like SD is, and looks very intuitive and user friendly. It could end up being the engine of choice again just like UE3 was previous gen. Whether or not we'll get the full range of it's features in most games remains to be seen. We'll see.

I see they are still riding NVIDIA hard. Maybe if they opened up to AMD hardware more the could get more people using their tools than the have now. No one has ever been able to make games that remotely look like the demos EPIC put out. You can always usually spot an UNREAL ENGINE game.

problem is AMD's hardware does not natively support PhysX (yes i know Nvidia owns the tech and that PhysX can be ran off the CPU) the only way to open up to AMD's hardware would mean the removal of PhysX, currently there is only one form of tech from AMD that i can think of and that's TressFX but it's not hardware specific like PhysX is.

All new engines look great. Lets wait for them to be applied in games. Still...for me the SnowDrop is the ruler of the Earth, but cant wait for some demonstration of Naughty Dog's new Uncharted.

very few devs using Unreal engine, or even Unreal Engine V4 ?

you must be joking right?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CryEngine#Games_using...

While Cryengine is a fantastic engine, gaining users, it is nowhere near the amount of people using UnrealEngine in one form or another.

I was specifically meaning UE4. It's doesn't seem to be getting anywhere near as much love as UE3 did in it's early days, and even epic themselves have yet to show what they're working on (whereas this time last gen we'd seen both gears of war and unreal tournament 3)

but then again cryengine is half the price and royalty free for indies. I know which i'd go for.

It's good though. Hopefully no more over reliance on a single engine this time around.

Probably doesn't run too well on last gen. Give it a year or so and this will become the go-to engine I bet.

There's already games being built specifically for the new consoles that are adopting it - well see more yet to be announced ones at E3.

Don't forget the 360 had been out for over a year? before we saw gears, and I cant recall any UE3 engine games on xbox/ps2? Given the far larger install base and life cycle of last gen devs are a lot more reluctant to ignore them..so adopting an engine that would likely mean they'd have to rather than one that doesn't is the bigger risk.

But I agree.. would be nice if Epic put out a game to promote their engine too..rather than just demos

There will be a title showcasing the engine for sure. And I'm willing to bet it'll look incredible in the same way Gears was when it was first seen. In fact, I wouldn't doubt that it'll be another Gears title. I think this upcoming E3 is where we'll really see what the current gen represents. It'll be a good one.

The UE4 games are coming. My bet is within the next 3 months there will be a handful of big titles announced using it. Due to Epic burning some tech-bridges with this iteration, and that most games announced the last year or two has been forwardport/crossgen which ruled out the use of UE4.

it's epic themselves that are letting the team down atm. usually it's them who show off the first game to get everyone excited about the engine, but they havn't done that yet. and until they do i'm not sure we'll be seeing much of this engine, and even then i imagine a lot of devs will simply go elsewhere. i'd hope we'd see something from them at E3 this year personally. i just hope it isn't another roid rage, peck armour typical "epic" design.

The last few years has seen a swing towards in-house engines at the bigger companies. Like EA/Bioware using their own tech for games that used to be UE (like the next Mass Effect game).

Smaller devs are moving further towards licensed engines. I think Unity3D (which has had a steady growth) and UE4 will be the two largest in the coming years.

As someone else pointed out: Gears of War didn't launch until nearly a year into the Xbox 360's lifespan. They're not really that late, at least in relative terms..

Maybe they'll announce a real game at E3.

i'm not talking about launching, just seeing. i'm pretty sure we'd seen screens and trailers of UT3 by this point at LEAST. gears maybe a bit later? can't recall.

I don't really remember either. I do remember seeing Gears of War as an un-named tech demo before it was Gears of War though. So maybe there's hope for their other demos.

I hope they can make this into a game, art and graphics are already there, just go on from there and make it into a good SP title, 3rd person anyways.

In 2004 Microsoft and XNA creators club showed tech demos for the upcoming Xbox 360, and some of the character models were the brumak, and some of the locust from Gears of War.

We found out shortly after that, that it was going to be Gears of War, and that those models were from that, but yeah, it was sooner than now, in comparison.

Very nice indeed.
Now, a little question, what kind of program are you using to see the videos in your PCs? I can't see them without slowdowns and I have a well prepared PC.
