Where is the destruction?
this is my issue so far from what ive seen, they've got this awesome, open-world game engine with the best destruction out there, and they've decided to do a claustrophobic, horror shooter. it seems like a huge step backwards to me.

Loved RFG, but don't know what to think about Armageddon.
Yes, looks like step backward. :(

the openness of the world has nothing to do with the ability to render destruction in the game world - that's all GeoMods 2.0 running in the background of the world, whether it is open or not.

The decision to take Red Faction back to it's shooter roots has more to do with sells, or more specifically, the lack of sells, for Red Faction Guerrilla. The first two games in the series that used the original GeoMods, sold a helluva lot better than Guerrilla. Which is a shame, as Guerrilla was/is awesome, and really allowed GeoMods 2.0 to shine, by rewarding the player for thinking about in-game destruction strategically.

If they want to, they can still build Armageddon on top of GeoMods 2.0 and allow for unparalleled level of destruction in a shooter, and continue to reward gamers for thinking in destructively strategic terms, when they are opening cans of whoopass on anyone in their way - which is what I am hoping they have decided to do, as that was one of the things that made the first two Red Faction games so special. More than likely, we are not seeing a lot of that in the promo clips, as lets face facts, to most gamers, lots of running and gunning and blowing shit up, looks a lot more fun than stopping to selectively think about what to blow up and the best way to blow it up to yield the best possible desired result, before actually blowing it up. For those of us who have played Guerrilla, we already know better. But for everyone else, hooked on their Halos, and Killzones and Call of Duties and their Gears of Wars, showing videos of actual game play strategy at work, may seem a bit . . . boring. And I am sure that THQ now that they have had time to restructure their company and dig themselves out of a very deep financial hole that almost saw them go out of business, want to sell the next game in the Red Faction series to as many gamers as possible, and prove to everyone, their concept of an action game can be just as fun as Call of Duty.

I'm just hoping that GeoMods 2.0 will make it into more THQ developed games - Saints Row 3, Darksiders 2 and Metro 2034 instantly come to mind as games that could benefit greatly from the technology.

I see your argument FreeSwag but i gotta side with everyone else on this one. Sure RFG didn't sell as well as some games...but it was a very good sandbox game with amazing destruction which is unheard of which seemed to draw more and more people in the longer it was out. I kinda look at it like the first Just Cause game....an amazing sandbox game that was almost unheard of....Just Cause 2 came out selling like crazy at the start. Just cause 2 went from free roam to free roam. I just can't really think of getting into this game as much as the first BECAUSE of the shooter-ish feel and i think people will agree with me on this one.

Who are they tailoring this game for? Cause it doesn't seem to be for Guerrellia Fans, nor the original Red Faction FPS fans.
What they SHOULD have done is giving us FreeSpace 3. Now that sounds like something I would be interested in!

If you check the E3 booth presentation of the game (gametrailers maybe) you can clearly see the geomod 2.0 is still there.

going back to the roots is not nessecarily the best option when your previous game didn't do quite as well as you thought it would.

Back in the day of RF1 and RF2 there weren't the same competition in corridor shooters that we see today. It's a totally different market, and I think the only hope for your game to go blockbuster you have to either have utterly crazy production value, or go for being just a little bit different. RF:Guerilla tried being just a bit different with a very well done destruction engine, and I had hoped would do better altogether sales wise.

Granted, I never did pick the RF:Guerrila up, but I was close to, and really liked the demo.

This? Nah, I'm not even remotely interested. And why is it so bloody dark?

sad....
