Video PS3

Atlus released this first commented Walktrough video of Demon's Souls, a game that definitely requires a long explanation to grasp how deep its gameplay can be.

Wait, is this a Japanese WRPG or what? Since Atlus is involved and all... Anyway I'm still waiting on that one WRPG to finally get me into the genre. I'm so close!

"roused the old one from the eterblahnal slumblah blah blah blah blah"

I don't know much about this game and this "walkthrough" did nothing to get my interest juices flowing.

I'm kind of interested. If it does things right it might be cool but i feel somewhat doubtful. From videos it looks like it takes the stale combat of a slow paced action rpg and mixes it up with the no-side-quests kind of gameplay i'd expect form a JRPG. I'll ahve to see more and hear more before i decide on this one.

Looks interesting enough but why on earth do they insist on a walkthrough that presents nothing new to the rpgs at all? And don't get me started on the voice... amateur night or what? I'd love to try it out though.

"Nothing new to RPGs at all"? Are you fucking kidding me! Have you heard of the online stuff?

Let me make it crystal clear. Imagine you're playing Oblivion and you come across a boss. You die, but before that you realised that Fire was working against the boss. So once you die, you can leave a note on the ground. So, when some other player comes through that area, they can read your hint and even rate that hint if it was actually useful.

You can even see ghost replays. This game is adding online stuff to a single-player RPG. That's an immense step forward.

That was an incredibly boring presentation. I've heard good things about this game, but a frustrating RPG is not on my my to buy list.

yeah the online does sound really interesting.. it is a shame though that theres no a true co-op.

The notes being left, how does that work exactly? is it only by people that own the game that are on your friends list? or people top of the leader boards? or just random peoples hints generated as you play?

Demon Soul’s is not difficult; it is just unforgiving by the standards of most modern games. If you die on a boss you are not spat out a checkpoint 10 seconds before it but asked to do the section again, if you die repeatedly the difficulty does not rank down, and if you grind your stats up then attack the boss with the same incorrect strategy it will still beat you, and continue to beat you, until you wise up.

The game merely asks that you stay awake and learn. You will die a lot at first because you (not your character) are inexperienced – but there are no impassable barriers here. The combat system isn’t very flashy (nothing is) but it is certainly good. Your move set may seem limited to some action titles but every single move in your arsenal is important, which is more than can be said about everyone’s favourite button mashers. Each weapon handles uniquely, each enemy does will ask some amount of pattern recognition, there are lots of customisation options - it’s all there.

In addition to being the best RPG so far this generation it is also, strangely enough, the best survival horror. All the tension building and atmosphere in the world cannot beat getting to the end of a 30 minute crawl through a blooded dungeon and stopping dead in your tracks as a set of red eyes stare back at you from pitch blackness. Death is so significant you actually fear for your avatar, something I haven’t felt in a modern title for a long time.

You mean why does the content in the walkthrough present nothing new? Because the game certainly does. Someone has mentioned the notes. Though more significant is when other players invade your game and try and kill you.

Indeed. Dieing isn't as bad as people think. If it becomes frustrating, try doing something else. There's not a specific way to defeat an encounter. Though I have to say I've found some really easy ways, hehe.

These monsters aren't retardedly overpowered or anything. You just need to think before you act, which apparently is highly uncommon as of late.

despite what i said prior to this post, i absolutely LOVE the game. it really isnt all that difficult, but it's unforgiving when things DO go wrong. i've died about 20 times in about 50 hours, and 90% of those have been due to high falls from ledges. so it really isnt as bad as some reviews make it seem, sure it's hard if you run in like a headless chicken, but play it properly and it's a cake walk. i guess it's the best JRPG this gen so far (based on reviews) and it's definately my GOTY, well, at least untill friday....uncharted 2 baby.
