Today on Gamersyde, we're offering you a free journey to the past on board of our DeLorean. Let's start with the year 1989, back when the Master System was about to welcome Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap. 28 years later, Ryuichi Nishizawa's game returns thanks to the work of French developer Lizardcube and publisher DotEmu. We have an avalanche of videos of the game to share with you, along with our verdict on this excellent remake of the all-time classic.
Verdict
For the fans willing to play Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap with beautiful 2D visuals and a fantastic remastered soundtrack, Lizardcube's remake is a must-have. Developed by hardcore fans for hardcore fans, this 2017 edition is a love letter to the original and his maker. Beware though, as this remains a retro experience in essence, with some of the constraints of the original, like when you have to return to the village every time you die and you need to backtrack all the way to the boss. Some might also be frustrated when bouncing back and forth between enemies or projectiles in some cases, or when the random loot system is not on your side. Beyond that though, Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap is the proof that old glories from the eighties still have their place among us. On a personal level, we do hope more projects like this will come true in the future, including maybe European classics like Rick Dangerous, Indiana Jones's illegitimate son and Lara Croft's real father. Until that happens, just play Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap for God's sake!
- On the plus side
- Splendid visuals
- Splendid soundtrack
- The original graphics and/or soundtrack in the press of 2 buttons
- A founding title in many respects
- Secrets everywhere
- 5 stars retro experience
- The charm stones are gone
- Wonder Girl will annoy Mancrush
- The unlockable bonus (artworks, videos)
- Cross save with the Master System version thanks to passwords
- On the downside
- Will be frustrating to those who don't like to start over after each death
- Not everyone will like the old random loot system

PS. Out of curiosity, what does God's - Japanese - sake have to do with anything? Does this means that if I play the game, I will get it? :P
Nice one! :)
