I can't help it, but ToV looked better, it was so charming. This on the other side has a confused art direction, especially the big arrays. It just looks BAD, I didn't expect that from a FF.

Viginti: Look at gameplay videos instead of stills: it looks then thousand times better than similar environments in, for instance, The Last Remanant.

It will probably be the best looking RPG this gen when it's out and you play it on your screen..

The detail in the 2nd screen is crazy even for CGI.

no, look at the gameplay pics, there is definitely a lack of dithering when compared to the PS3 version. Id say it does look more crisp, but I think the textures might be lacking slightly more....Ill wait for a more accurate comparison.

Yes, I did look at the gameplay pics and there is dithering in the hair, around the same level as the PS3 version, which is pretty much where most of the dithering occurred. Look at image 6 for dithering in the hair!

Textures look pretty similar though. Same low-res grass texture.

I am fairly certain this port will be like for like with the PS3 version, dithering effects included. The only difference will be in the resolution of the FMVs, but it will be pretty slight.

if those are stills from the "poor quality dvd compressed cgi" that countless ps3 fanboys have been telling me about then i think i can just about live with them.

Plus, like most of us that actually have HD tv's, i don't have one that's 1080p anyway..so i must assume that 1080p cutscenes over 720p ones would be wasted on me

On a gameplay note.. that first gameplay screen looks amazing. I'd like to see the 360 version in motion. I hope the framerates rock steady

Sigh. If you want to use comparison pics, choose pics from the same distance and same angle as dithering is kind of unique in the way it presents itself. But you obviously do care, as you presented me with these pics and continue this line of discussion!

Anywho, yes, that pic with Fang's hair does have less dithering. But look at picture 6 and how apparent the dithering is!

That's funny, I could have sworn I was playing the best looking RPG this gen already. It's called Mass Effect 2. And unlike FFXIII, ME2 does not have to resort to liberal usages of CGI to trick people into thinking that it looks better than it actually is.

That stated, I still cannot wait to get my hands on FFXIII. I"m pretty sure that it is going to be a fantastic RPG experience, likely the best RPG to come out of Japan for the entire gen - which is kind of sad when you consider the Japanese (FF and DQ especially) used to dominate this genre. There have been a lot of great RPG stories told this gen from Japan, unfortunately, it's been coupled with gameplay that's for the more part, more outdated than Ford's Model-T. If the Japanese could get off their insular fence and create a truly modern RPG, they could once again set the entire world on fire - but at this point, I think it is wishful thinking that will ever happen at any point before the end of this generation.

I digress.

As for FFXIII being the best looking RPG out there for the entire generation, it's already been bested by Mass Effect 2, and Mass Effect 3 is likely to turn up the heat even more. And then there is the matter of Bethesda. Now that they own iD Software and have first party hands on iD Tech 5, Elder Scrolls V and Fallout 4 (not to be confused with Fallout: New Vegas), is going to graphically shit all over everyone else' RPGs.

So you must be about 12 right now? :)

I'm almost finished my second playthrough of FF13, and maybe it's because I don't have to put up with a shitty dub or westernization in general, but it's completely renewed my faith in the series after FF12.

Best A/V experience since MGS4 easily, and the gameplay manages to be just as fun as FF10 despite such drastically different mechanics. The only flaw is lack of sidequests, but everything else is so perfect I can overlook it.

I hope the PS4 is region free too!

Picture #6 is unique in that its from the PS3 version, Its been released before in a batch. Thats why the dithering is apparent in that particular pic. The FMV pics are also obviously PS3 version, The NEW pics are the 360 ones

Uh...no? I don't know what your frame of reference is but there's nothing that fantastical about the quality of the CG.

Why do you people compare bullshots to bullshots?

Either way, of course 360 version runs the same as PS3 one... Microsoft made sure of that. That's not a huge feat though as the engine looks quiet aged already.

I chuckled at this:
http://kotaku.com/5470957/new-final-fantasy-xiii-s...

So the new screens are essentially from the same source using different button icons... Don't know why Square bothers doing this.

HHmm, who would have thought. The port does look slightly better than the original.

But yeah, i should wait until i see it in motion too (even if the original sucks either way).

In the end, graphics are not the biggest thing RPG's have going on for them, but it helps inmersion a lot. FFXIII's graphics are perfectly fine on either console, they are not great by any means, but they fulfill their purpose, which is bringing the game's world to life.

It may look like that to some people i guess, but as far as i know, FFXIII is the first to use it.
