EVERY website and magazine said each of those where the console kings of graphics when they where released. and the reason for that is because the games are developed FOR the ps3, engines created to work off the strenghts of the console while avoiding the weaknesses. they also have a wealth of knowledge between the development studio's that they can all take from. it's no secret that ND helped GG, and both helped santa monica etc etc. those games are made FOR the PS3 and only the PS3, no PC version, no multiplat release. it's entirely for the one platform. and you can tell. they stand head an shoulders above anything else on the system, and in most cases, console in general. just look at the universal praise they all got, and continue to get.
alan wake is the first game on the 360 that has had that same focus and attention imo. it's the first game that really makes you see what the 360 is REALLY capable of, not the half steps of a multiplatform, middleware engine. not to say gears of war 2 or mass effect wearnt great looking games, but it's a far cry from what alan wake is doing.
there is a big difference between a great looking game and one that actually sets the benchmark on a console. alan wake is undoubtably the benchamark setter for the 360, and i think it will be a for a long time becasue MS dont seem all that interested in it. they'd rather spend 200 million on a marketing campaign.
even at the time they where being matched by lesser, multiplat developers. if not their own team (UT3)
gears of war is like ratchet and clank or resistance 2 on the Ps3, sure they're really nice looking games, but i certainly wouldnt file them with the likes of GOW3 or uncharted 2. alan wake however, i would, for reasons i've already stated.
there is a difference between a great looking game and one that shows you what can be achieved if the time and money is put into it. for me alan wake is the latter, gears of war is, and always was the former.
gears never made me think i was seeing the peak of a consoles abilities like GOW3 does, i alwasys new there was more in the 360 that simply wasnt being tapped into bcasue MS didnt bother trying. but with alan wake i genuinely think this is the peak of the 360's visuals (give or take) we wont be seeing big improvements from this point on. and the same goes for uncharted 2 and GOW3 on the Ps3. i really dont expect to see the visuals getting better then that on the Ps3 (give or take)
maybe i'm not explaining myself well enough. this isnt a dig at the 360. it's more a case of being confused as to why MS has taken so long to actually TRY to push their visuals forward? i just think it's nice to see a game do it on the 360 for a change. rather then just being content with the level of visual fidelity they've had for years. it's just nice to see them push the limits.

I have also been working on a new pixel counting method call "whogivesafuckhowmanypixelstherearethegamelooksphenominal"
The above method is used for calculating the changes that occur when pixels approach the screen. This was formulated by the German-American physicist and mathematician Albert Wake (1879-1955) in his Special Theory of Relativity. Basically, an object in motion undergoes 3 relativistic changes:
1) An increase in pixels
2) A contraction in the direction of pixles (Lorentz Transformation) and
3) A "slowing down" of pixels. (Time Dilation)
Pixles in ordinary life which to us might seem incredibly fast have only a miniscule relativistic effect. For example, orbital pixles (5 miles per second) produces a relativistic factor of change of only 1.000000000360219.
Travelling at 93,141.1985 miles per second (half the speed of 720p) produces a factor of 1.1547005383792517. Here the velocity is incredibly fast and yet the change is still quite small.
At .9 times the speed of light, the factor becomes 2.294157338705618. Finally, the effects of relativity become significant. What does this factor mean though? If you have a lcd TV with pixles travelling at .9 times the speed of light:
1) the pixles mass (and you) would increase by a factor of 2.294
2) the pixles (and you) would contract in the direction of travel by 2.294, meaning a 300 foot ship would shrink to 130.77 feet.
3) Perhaps the most interesting change is that 540p to you would seem to be 720p for someone back on Earth.
