Good grief this game is super-intense. Also playing makes me see why the dev had such a weird answer about resolution. I do think it is 720p(just look at Alan when there aren't a zillion effects going on), with all the effects, clarity varies constantly- there is the motion blur, the untouchable atmospherics( anyone who has dealt with opacity maps in conjunction with volumetrics knows how impressive what they've achieved is), and the awesome volume light. It really is a beautiful game with an almost tangible quality. And then the absolutely inadequate facial animation poops on it :P Still, it is right up there with UC2, even surpassing it is some areas, IMO.

I can't remember the last time I was so tense playing a game. Awesome. I can't believe I got TWO incredible games on one day! Heaven...

Played me some Alan Wake. And my impressions are:

- Combat is quite satisfying.
- Combat can be very frustrating when facing more than 2 enemies at a time.
- Graphics are stunning, (facial) animations are crap.
- Atmosphere is spot on, walking around in the woods when the wind picks up and the trees start 'dancing' is freaky as hell!
- Storytelling is excellent, Alan Wake's buddy (whatshisface, forget the name...doh!) is very well done. Alan himself is not a very interesting character, but servicable. He doesn't have to be though, the rest of the cast and the atmosphere more than make up for it.
- Combat get's repetitive after a while.
- Don't save up weapons and ammo, ýou'll lose the whole lot after an episode which sucks bigtime!
- I don't read the pages because all they do is spoil what's gonna happen next.
- Even though the atmosphere is excellent, there's just TOO MUCH HIKING IN THE WOODS! There's too much hiking in general actually.

The game does not live up to it's hype. It's fun, but it's no masterpiece...

Hey now, stop misquoting me! :P

I never said 'far from a masterpiece'. I think, so far, that the game is good. I'm definitely enjoying it. Definitely worth getting if you're into good SP experiences. But it's no Half-life, Ninja Gaiden, GTA or even Gears of War. I.E: not a masterpiece.

But, I think the sequel has potential to join the elite. The foundation is there, it just needs refinement. In no way am I claiming you should skip this game, absolutely not! I definitely recommend this game. Just because it isn't a masterpiece, doesn't mean it's not worth a purchase. :)

probably a smart choice. i have a feeling it will drop in price relatively quickly. single player only, mixed reviews, releatively short. i'll say a month and a half and it'll be 25quid, if not less.

How far through the game are Jato? which episode?

I think we have to agree on something here. Had this game been released 2-3 years ago, it would have been called a masterpiece without a shadow of a doubt and I think that's totally unfair. In my opinion, of course, it is a masterpiece. I like my gaming experience to be different and Alan Wake offers me just that. A unique experience that I wont find anywhere else.

I've just started on Episode 4.

If the game had released 3 years ago, it still wouldn't have been a masterpiece to me. It's just not good enough overal. Would it have gotten better critical reception? Sure with that tech. But no game would've released on the 360 looking like that back then. So, I'd say it's fair. But, as a wise man once said:

"One man's trash is another man's treasure".

Obviously I'm not saying Alan Wake is trash, haha. But, if it's a masterpiece to you...then that's all you need to care about really. Differents strokes et all... ;)

and that's fair and I agree. To each their own, indeed :D PS: the game picks up nicely in Episode 4 by the way

See I didn't think any of those games were masterpieces, like Alimo says its all a matter of taste.

saying that I rarely see a game these days that I would call a masterpiece.

I agree with that, as I mentioned earlier. Whether a game is a masterpiece or not is highly subjective to personal preference.

On the other hand, I could point out that every title I mentioned there scores an average of atleast 94% on metacritic. And I could point out that critical reception could be used as a measuring stick as to whether a game is or isn't considered as being a masterpiece.

One could conclude on that basis that Alan Wake therefor cannot be considered a masterpiece. It really just depends on how you want to spin it... ;)

Played me some Alan Wake. And my impressions are:
- Combat is quite satisfying.
True.
- Combat can be very frustrating when facing more than 2 enemies at a time.
I'm playing on normal and that can be true too. Gets me on edge though, which is good.
- Graphics are stunning, (facial) animations are crap.
I used to not agree with this, but it looks like not watching enough videos fooled me. Facial animations are indeed crap, can't believe it.
- Atmosphere is spot on, walking around in the woods when the wind picks up and the trees start 'dancing' is freaky as hell!
True, really impressive stuff.
- Storytelling is excellent, Alan Wake's buddy (whatshisface, forget the name...doh!) is very well done. Alan himself is not a very interesting character, but servicable. He doesn't have to be though, the rest of the cast and the atmosphere more than make up for it.
Alan is just fine in my opinion. The narrative is really awesome though, I really dig that.
- Combat get's repetitive after a while.
I'm on chapter 2, and so far it hasn't gotten old. It can be tough though, and then the running HAS to start, otherwise I die. Getting surrounded by enemies in the dark can be really cool, but it can as you said before get frustrating as well.
- Don't save up weapons and ammo, ýou'll lose the whole lot after an episode which sucks bigtime!
I was wondering if that was a chapter 1 thing, so it's good to know before chapter 2 ends.
- I don't read the pages because all they do is spoil what's gonna happen next.
LOL, I was reading them at first. I think they are cool, but the fact that they tell you exactly what will happen is pretty dumb. I quickly realized it was just spoiling the story.
- Even though the atmosphere is excellent, there's just TOO MUCH HIKING IN THE WOODS! There's too much hiking in general actually.

The game does not live up to it's hype. It's fun, but it's no masterpiece...
I still can't get enough of how well done the woods is done, so the more hiking the more jaw-dropping thus far.

I also think I agree with it not living up to its hype.......IF you were expecting some sort of second coming. So far it's Mass Effect 2, then Splinter Cell, then this closely behind it. Of course I haven't finished Wake, but it's looking like this is it. Great game though, you should buy it!

I think the pacing is a little off. As Jato said there is too much of walking through woods that all look the same. There are moments of brilliance in this game and it has made me jump many times. I'm on chapter 5 just now and I think I'll play to the end tonight. I am glad I rented this though, as it's felt pretty short.
