I can't remember the last time I was so tense playing a game. Awesome. I can't believe I got TWO incredible games on one day! Heaven...
Oooh, Profound, isn't it?
- Combat is quite satisfying.
- Combat can be very frustrating when facing more than 2 enemies at a time.
- Graphics are stunning, (facial) animations are crap.
- Atmosphere is spot on, walking around in the woods when the wind picks up and the trees start 'dancing' is freaky as hell!
- Storytelling is excellent, Alan Wake's buddy (whatshisface, forget the name...doh!) is very well done. Alan himself is not a very interesting character, but servicable. He doesn't have to be though, the rest of the cast and the atmosphere more than make up for it.
- Combat get's repetitive after a while.
- Don't save up weapons and ammo, ýou'll lose the whole lot after an episode which sucks bigtime!
- I don't read the pages because all they do is spoil what's gonna happen next.
- Even though the atmosphere is excellent, there's just TOO MUCH HIKING IN THE WOODS! There's too much hiking in general actually.
The game does not live up to it's hype. It's fun, but it's no masterpiece...

FROM THE DARKNESS I DRAW MY STRENGTH!!
ONE PIECE of advice for everyone. DONT READ the script pages AT ALL. I didnt
I never said 'far from a masterpiece'. I think, so far, that the game is good. I'm definitely enjoying it. Definitely worth getting if you're into good SP experiences. But it's no Half-life, Ninja Gaiden, GTA or even Gears of War. I.E: not a masterpiece.
But, I think the sequel has potential to join the elite. The foundation is there, it just needs refinement. In no way am I claiming you should skip this game, absolutely not! I definitely recommend this game. Just because it isn't a masterpiece, doesn't mean it's not worth a purchase. :)

I think we have to agree on something here. Had this game been released 2-3 years ago, it would have been called a masterpiece without a shadow of a doubt and I think that's totally unfair. In my opinion, of course, it is a masterpiece. I like my gaming experience to be different and Alan Wake offers me just that. A unique experience that I wont find anywhere else.

If the game had released 3 years ago, it still wouldn't have been a masterpiece to me. It's just not good enough overal. Would it have gotten better critical reception? Sure with that tech. But no game would've released on the 360 looking like that back then. So, I'd say it's fair. But, as a wise man once said:
"One man's trash is another man's treasure".
Obviously I'm not saying Alan Wake is trash, haha. But, if it's a masterpiece to you...then that's all you need to care about really. Differents strokes et all... ;)

saying that I rarely see a game these days that I would call a masterpiece.
Marumaro for the WIN !!
On the other hand, I could point out that every title I mentioned there scores an average of atleast 94% on metacritic. And I could point out that critical reception could be used as a measuring stick as to whether a game is or isn't considered as being a masterpiece.
One could conclude on that basis that Alan Wake therefor cannot be considered a masterpiece. It really just depends on how you want to spin it... ;)

I also think I agree with it not living up to its hype.......IF you were expecting some sort of second coming. So far it's Mass Effect 2, then Splinter Cell, then this closely behind it. Of course I haven't finished Wake, but it's looking like this is it. Great game though, you should buy it!
