One thing that I think is cheap is the heavy machine gun, or rather "The weapon that never stop shooting"...spray and pray weapon seriously, even surprised that you can sprint with that monster :P
If its very short range like that abondon building were its Spetznaz and SAS, then SMG is good yes...but most of the levels are more open range, and thats were assault rifles come in.

Hell even with the silencer (which penalizes range) the P90 and MP5 can still be effective at a reasonable distance.

The MP is great.

I do get the personal preference thing though. I use the M14 a lot when I'm pubbing, and the P90 as well, even though I know the MP5 may be better for certain rounds anyway. I play long range, not because I know I'm more effective at a distance, but because I find it more satisfying.
But that said, there is still obvious value in knowing these things. This discussion almost belongs in Ace's new thread, but they started here anyway.. so I'm going to continue them here.
In a single game, what do you think your best k/d has been thus far? I think mine is probably still that 50/10 game I had last week.. 5:1 is definitely much better than my average.. but it doesn't help that I've been playing S&D in a lot of servers filled with compeditive players. Well it does help in the long run.. but it doesn't help me pad my statistics :)
No, but i'm more than a week behind, so 'im still getting to know the maps and only 3 hours in MP maybe it will get better with time as i get more confortable with the maps, unlock new weapons and perks.
My Assassins Creed got dispatched today (this time game.co.uk), hope they are faster ...
I want to play, goddammit! Especially after hearing how everyone likes it ...
don't think im buying more stuff there...
I have seen people just keep spraying that machine gun like if it was an SMG, and in real life you can't do that.
Sure it is a fact that M16 and M4 is your regular default good long and short range weapons...but because this is a game and they have to balance stuff up, it all comes down to what wepaon you like, simple as that.

The weapon balance in Call of Duty 4 is pretty solid between classes. Each comes with its own set of advantages and disadvantages. Within those classes, there are even more distinctions between the different weapons. The M16 and M14 are obviously the best long range assault rifles, but they break down a little at close range. The G36C, and M4 represent a more balanced area between the two, but overall the M4 just seems like a better gun. There's a reason that you'll find more people using it in competition already.. and it's not because they haven't unlocked the G36C yet. I realize you're playing it casually, and it's pretty capable in its own right.. but I'll stand by that statement. The G36C is one of the hardest assault rifles to recommend to anyone. If you're looking for a balanced weapon that works at any distance, than the M4 seems like a sure thing.
There's not an FPS in the world that I can think of where every weapon is perfectly balanced against one another. I'm just giving you the straight dope. The MP5 will eat the G36C for breakfast at medium range, and the M16 at long range, and the M4 seems like a better balance between the two.
I'm not really suggesting the game isn't well balanced. It's about as well balanced as you could expect a game with this much customization to be. But it doesn't just come down to what you like in a videogame, some weapons are in fact better than others.
Well I LOVE the M4 for sure, no doubt about it, but I like G36C better, I have killed more with that weapon when I picked it up (rarely) than I have with M4, but that is what I like.
But like I said in the past...it depends o what map I am gonna play in, I change the best weapon that suits "me" best.

Well ACOG zooms in too much, not good for close quarters. Red dot seems to be more accurate than ACOG :S

I chose my two favorite ones...M4 Carbine as secondary and G36C as primary :D
Although, that was on Perk 2, so I have to sacrifice Stopping Power.

I don't think it's worth sacraficing stopping power for overkill, especially with those two weapons.. since they both basically serve the same function. I'd use a long range assault rifle + a fully auto assault rifle or SMG if you're going to use overkill.
Once you get the deagle overkill is sorta pointless because the deagle is a great companion for any long range weapon already.
POP POP POP!
They give you a gold one when you reach 55. It's sexy.
