Too bad they didnt show the console version.

But I love the new combat much more. Looks faster, more stylish in the attacks and have more "action" behind it than the simple swings in the original.

I want to see a proper console version being played as a action RPG, if I liked it, definitely buying it!
But seeing it from the PC version, I am liking the combat alot.

Looks pretty dull to me, but it's good to see that you can still play it how it should be played on PC (tactically) - although I doubt the same can be said for the console version. I do think it's somewhat of an improvement over the original console version, especially as the classic style of gameplay didn't really work on the 360/PS3, but now that they've gone all action-orientated it feels like the soul of the original has been sucked out.

To be honest though, with Skyrim, Reckoning and War in the North coming out next year as well, my fantasy cravings will be fully satisfied already.

There are alot of semi based and turn based fantasy RPGs out there to choose from, I am glad they made this one more actiony and faster paced (but still kept the way it is being played like the original) for us more "actiony fans" considering we dont have much to choose from that has quality.
Stop being selfish people LOL ;)

But I am probably going to get the first Dragon Age tomorrow (normal version) on PS3, seems if you master dual wielding sword specials the combat can look more hectic which I like and still play it tactically.
Though the only "tactical" part I do is to let the mage do chaotic spells to easy the battle for me or quickly use health potions.

Anyways, from the video I saw, they clearly showed that you can play pause and play and yet see the action combat animations of an action game, doesnt mean it is the next Ninja Gaiden or God of War, far from it.

I hope they make Skyrim good because Oblivion became meh fast IMO.
Kingdom of Amaleur and War in the North is what I am really waiting for as well as Dragon Age 2 in fantasy RPGs :)

The first game felt like a real tribute to Baldur's Gate, and many people - myself included - appreciated that. The sequel, based on what's been shown, feels like a poor attempt to try and make it a bit more mainstream and "actiony" as you put it; as a result, it's lost all its personality in my opinion. I agree that there should be more fantasy action games out there, but Dragon Age 2 shouldn't be one of them.

I categorically disagree about Oblivion as well - I invested a good 200 hourd into it, so it definitely didn't get old for me. :P

Skyrim is my most anticipated game in years!

If Dragon Age shouldnt be one of them, then what should?
Hope and dream so one magically shows up.

But I have been playing the PC version (going to buy the PC version tomorrow) and from the combat developer video for Dragon Age 2, it looks exactly the same and the only thing I noticed that was different was the fact the animations was faster and more stylish in combat to make them look as combos and flurry, I pulled that stuff off with my dual wielding sword in Dragon Age as well, but the animations of the attacks wasent as nice as Dragon Age 2, here they actually draged it on to make your warrior to look badass and fierce.

In no way this is going to be like NG or GoW as I mentioned before were you mash buttons and pull off combos, you do what you did in Dragon Age Origins, but this time, something cool will happens with the combat everytime, and since when was that a bad thing?

Its not like Traditional gameplay is reemplaced here is it?

DAO gameplay will be there if you want it.

For us will be all straight up real time badassery, whats wrong with that?

I still dont understand where this real time comes from?
The combat is real time, but not ina traditional sense like action hack and slash, the animations and all that makes you think it is, but I dont see it in DA2.

The combat acts like DA: Origins but the animations look more visceral and badass while doing so, thats all I saw from the video.

However, thats the PC version, it might be different for consoles, but I doubt it.

Oh, this is a good argument. Have you played it? You're assuming it's going to be good, right?

These games are RPG's first and foremost. That's really my only point. I think Bioware did a good job with combat in Mass Effect, but I'm not certain they know what they're doing here. When it comes to "action RPG" games, very few of them actually have good action combat. I can only imagine that this is especially true for people who are avid fans of third person action games, like Raptor and Sath are. And I think the main problem people have with people wanting that in this genre is that they're willing it into something that it's not. There are plenty of people who enjoy the combat in RPG games (even Fallout and Oblivion) enough that we don't want them bended into action games. This is all.

Well duh, those actually are action games, with good animations and combat, and look fun to play. This is none of that, even though it wants to be ;)

They flipped. First ME had the same, "I don't know what I want to be" feel to it. The RPG elements weren't all that greatly implemented, and the shooting was passable. They streamlined it in ME2 to focus more on the shooting and less on the RPG, obviously. For this game they did the opposite. It was a RPG from the get go, but now they added in the half-ass'd looking action to reach a wider audience. Now it comes off as another, "I don't know what I want to be" game.

I have been watching the combat video several times now, and it plays exactly like the first one, but the only thing that is different is that the combat is faster and attack animations are more stylized than the first one, this makes people thing its more like an action RPG than the first one when its not.

What is the problem with they adding cooler attack animations when the gameplay is still the same?
And I am pretty sure stats and stuff will take a huge part in the game just like it did in the first game.

We havent seen much gameplay footage with character stats, upgrades, skilltree....etc. to judge completely, and yet people are writing it off as an action RPG.

I don't think people are writing it off. Especially now that we've seen more PC footage, and it looks awesome. Bioware has pretty explicitly stated that they wanted a real time component on consoles though, haven't they?

It will feature a new combat system considering the first one was trying to mimic the PC version but with controls.
PC version will remain the same while we havent seen a proper console version yet.

I see no difference other than Dragon Age 2 has faster and cooler combat animations.

I enjoyed the combat in Fallout 3 (VATS + gore), I somewhat enjoyed it in ME (tedious shooter, but spamming powers like crazy never got old for me), I didn't enjoy the combat in ME2 at all (tedious shooter and global power cooldown killed the fun power spamming).

DA:O certainly had fun combat, I don't know what they're going after in PC version of DA2 (is it actiony like on consoles or still tactical?).
