There is something I dont get though, Why announce this now? why not at E3??? Wouldnt MS want this to be part of their conference?

My Fear is that E3 is going to be ALL Natal and Move which honestly, just thinking about it makes me wanna puke! This is why I think MS is moving this announcement away from the event... Sure MS has two events (one being dedicated to Natal Only) but I fear we wont be seeing much new games announcements apart from those destined for Natal. I expect the same from Sony.

E3 IS about new games announcement for this year and beyond. It doesnt have to be all about 2010. I mean you saw last year! it was all about 2010.

Campaign Information
Features

* Rod confirmed 4 Player Co-Op in the Gears IRC, with 4 unique characters. Rod confirmed that co-op includes Marcus, Dom, Cole, Baird and a "variety of other characters". Cliff confirms that at some points in the game you will play as an entirely different squad (that includes no Marcus and no Dom).

Story

* The story is written by fantastic author Karen Traviss, who wrote the Gears of War book series
* Set 18 months after Gears of War 2, and after the fourth Gears of War book.
* The Coalition has disbanded or dismantled. Everyone is essentially a Stranded.
* The Locust have not been seen in the time that has passed since the end of Gears 2 and the beginning of Gears 3
* The location shown in the "Ashes to Ashes" trailer is a location nicknamed 'Char', where the remains of victims from the Hammer of Dawn strikes are heavily present.
* Imulsion is infecting everything, not just the Locust. The Lambent are a ton of different nightmarish creatures.

Weapons

* The Pendulum Lancer is in Gears of War 3
* A Double Barrelled Shotgun was spotted in the Ashes to Ashes trailer. Lee Perry expands:

Cliff also confirms in the MeriStation TV interview (posted in the videos section) that the new shotgun does more damage but has a lower range and slower reload time than the Gnasher shotgun

Characters

* Dom is now heavily bearded. According to Rod, this is due to his problems dealing with the loss of his wife.
* Anya is the female COG soldier seen in the "Ashes to Ashes" trailer. We will learn more on her transition from pencil pusher to soldier throughout the books.

Enemies

* Lambent Locust: These enemies mutate and transform as you fight them.

Matchmaking

* Cliff confirmed they are tackling the bad matchmaking issues in Gears of War 3 in the Meristation TV interview. He mentions improved region filtering as one of the ways they are addressing this issue.
* There will be a new feature that allows players to stay together as a party. Details will be released later. This presumably covers random people you meet in matchmaking, as Gears already allows for group matchmaking.

I love the Gears of War series, so all I'm hoping for is that they go out with a bang in this trilogy. I have no doubt that they will.

From a story perspective, based on the info provided above, it sounds promising. Seems like the world's gone to shit anyway, despite the 'victory' at the end of Gears 2. It'll be interesting to see if Marcus' father, Adam, has a part to play in this, considering what happens after the credits in the last game. It seems like they're keen to break up the link somewhat between the second and third game which is good, as the end of the second one - as foreboding as it was - wasn't really leading to anything.

Anyway, can't wait to see/hear more in the coming months.

Please both Gears 1 and 2 were amazing games and universally recognized as such, and Gears 3 will be exceptional I’m sure.

A lot of speculation going around that the third installment will see the COG teaming up with the Locust to take down this new Lambent breed. That'd be pretty sweet.

Yeah, but equally hard to believe. I mean, after everything the two sides have gone through with each other, it doesn't really seem plausible to just team up like that... although maybe that shows how desperate they are, and how serious this Lambent threat is.

You know for sure that Dom wouldn't be up for it though, not after what the Locusts did to Maria. That in itself represents a potential source of conflict between Dom and the rest of the group - most notably Marcus. You can already see hints of tension between the two in the trailer.
